The solution to the "first time X champion" type of player

We've all met one of these players. They queue in for ranked and then decide to play AP Gragas with Stormraiders surge when they never played that champion before. What would fix this is if Riot would implement a new ranked restriction. The restriction would be that you have to have at least mastery level 4 on that champion to play it. I know there are OTPs and mains and this would probably benefit them as well since they would be pushed out of their comfort zone and try out new things. I feel like this would also make the ranked experience a bit better since the player has at least an idea how their champions work by mastery level 4. The only problem is that this might lead to mastery grind , which some people understandably hate. I would like to hear some feedback from the rest of the community as well!

No, that would just turn the game into a grind-fest. Just because they are lvl 4 (or even lvl 7) it does not mean they are good or even passable on the champion.

So you essentially want to force players to play normal games?

Then how do we trade champs with our teammates?

Hmm that is true. I didn't take trading into consideration. BUT the way trading works could be changed as well somehow maybe

Not happening You can never put restrictions on what champions you can pick in ranked because of the trading system

Also it'd be pretty stupid if i had to grind to mastery 4 for a champion i already know how to play from playing on another account

I think that this might be an ok fix if the mastery requirement wasn't as high. The potential down sides out weigh the good my mine (and apparently the comment section's) opinion. Having a limit put on your champion pool never feels good even if the limit should be rather unimpactful for most players. The while first timing someone in rank is annoying, it's such a relatively small problem that I doubt riot would address it unless the answer was super simple and easy to fix.

I think that first timers in ranked is a symptom of a bigger problem, which is that people play the same que for different reasons. Some people play ranked because they want to improve and be the best player that they can be. And then there are others that play ranked because normal mode is considered the casual mode, and they wouldn't be caught dead there. Since there isn't anything that normals offer that ranked doesn't, people bring their desire to have not competitive fun into ranked, the competitive mode. If riot gave normals some benefit ranked didn't have people might play both ques for their intended purpose.
