Simple Way to Make Support More Attractive

Whenever I think about heading to the Rift as a support, the major drawback that keeps me disinterested is the fact that I need to use one of my six slots on a sightstone. Don't get me wrong, I think the support role should be doing this, but you feel incomplete as a champion. There are other reasons that the support role isn't very popular, but for me at least, the sightsone slot is the main culprit. My solution to this is if, and only if, you're given the support role, you should have the ability to upgrade your free ward to a sightstone at level 9. It should cost gold, but it shouldn't take away from your build.

Now you might say, wait, that's too OP having a sightsone slot AND six items. I don't think so because you are forgoing all farm, you're a lower level than most players due to less XP gains, you're sacrificing a lot already for your ADC to do work. And even if it does get to late game, and you have a full build and a sightstone, that should be a perk of the position. You did it, you got your team to late game by warding and supporting them. You deserve that and I think it would really bring a lot of people to the role since it would be the only one with this unique ability.

Traditional supports can function based on their kit alone, not items. That's why they're gold starved and put into a duo lane with champions that scale with items, not level. (shared experience but the adc gets the farm- to buy items)

We (supports) don't really NEED that sixth slot.

The sightstone is a relic. It's from a time when vision was almost wholly the support's problem, so Riot threw the supports a bone in the form of the most gold efficient vision item.

Now, in modern League, all positions should have equal responsibility with vision because of trinkets. Unfortunately, since sightstone still exists and is almost inseparable from the support role, the support role is associated with being in charge of vision. Most players find vision to be an important, albeit boring, job that they would love to have someone else do for them.

If sightstone were to be taken from the game, supports would have no more responsibility toward team vision than any other role. In doing so, they would be separated from being "the role that does the most vision work" and enjoy more popularity because of it.

This also has the benevolent side effect of removing a "required" item from the support build path, effectively giving all supports 800 extra gold to do whatever they want with. That's not chump change, especially early game where even a minor increase in stats can be huge.

The downside is that supports won't be able to both place and sweep for wards very well, even with control wards. And that's not really a downside, since it makes controlling vision a team game instead of an individual effort.

If they made the trinket into a sightstone then the support cant sweep as well.

I never build the support items that the sightstone builds out of. The utility on the ghosts seeking or shield is so much better than the stone in an item

the issues i see with this are

A) This will give Mage supports like brand, Zyra, and Annie more power as a support. B) This will cause other mid laners to be picked up in the support role. like Ori, Syndra, Cass, Etc. which will cause less or no peel for the team causing AP mids or ADC';s to just get destroyed by assassins C) Less vision control. Generally when a support backs for the first time around levels 3-5 they buy a sightstone to provide better vision for the team because the Warding totem takes to long to charge to keep an area well warded, they also buy a vision ward, and they change the Warding Totem for a Sweeping Lens so they can clear wards. Supports don't just get vision for your team. they also deny vision for the enemy.

Something is wrong if you actually need all six slots as a Support. It means your Carries aren't Carrying.

Mostly the reason people arent interested in being a support from what I can only assume is due to what being support involves. And that involves chores like constantly warding and looking for enemy wards. Some dont like to do those errands and if you can tell, some people in game that arent playing support dont like to make it a habit to ward. Secondly, people rather be right where the action is instead of standing behind everyone catching assists while using their handy dandy supportive abilities.

If people can upgrade their trinket to a sightstone, everyone would want it. And honestly I believe that isnt doable, because if that were to happen, some may be discourage to buy a sweeper if sweeper is like a sightstone like it is now, where its just an individual item that provides just that purpose and nothing else. Which is what sightstone already is. So that "solution" will be going in circles. I dont know what I said here, made sense, but I hope it did made some.

Also as a support main, I dont need my whole 6 slots to be highly efficient. 90% of the games I play, I already have trouble deciding what I want to build in my 1 or 2 last slots, which I actually leave empty until I decide what I want the slot to be used for. After the 4 items I mainly build is there, Im pretty good for the rest of the game. The last 1 or 2 items are just perks.

Problem with that is what if you are playing blind pick or support traded roles with another guy?

They made the sightstone upgrade into very good items. It really shouldn't feel bad buying it...
