Do ranked placements drop your Elo?

Ok during my placements for this season I got bronze 5... I know I Am a way better player I went 7/3 for w/l and last season I placed in bronze 4 with 3 wins and 7 loss I was really hoping I was gonna get a higher rank then bronze. Considering my friend that I was talking to was b5 and had the same w/l ratio he got silver so how is this fair? I was stuck in Elo hell last season then got out and was climbing but hit a brick wall with the trolls

Almost everyone dropped from where they were. There was a popup in the client at the start of the season that explained that.
