Just watch this. And for anyone who is wondering the video isn't cherry picked I just went to youtube and searched "league of legends season 4 gameplay" and this is the first video that pops up. This guy was playing FIora, one of the champs that did lots of damage back then, and even with Fiora he didn't do that much damage even after getting pretty fed.
Fiora. 0 MR items. 50 Mr on lvl 6. I almost cried.

Damage creep is almost entirely the new runes. Paired with the removal of defensive runes. (armor/mr) if you went back to any season before they added keystone masteries you would see far less damage in the game.
Let's not forget the scarce resource known as cdr. Back then any cdr item with offensive capabilities would have less ad or ap then items without it, and tank items almost had none. While back then I'd say certain classes has too little access to cdr when they need it. Today there's just too much for anyone, and with little to no sacrifice.
