Best Support?

I have been main support for quite some time but everyone always debates when I tell them Sona is the best support. Just interested to hear people's reasons why she isn't the best, cause I have played all supports now and she has everything needed in my opinion. She has healing, shields, speed boost, and a super powerful stun ult that I have changed so many fights with. A lot of people say she revolves around the ult, but being able to heal and speed your team out of fights is extremely helpful, especially with max CDR so I can spam healing. Soraka would be my other choice, but sacrificing health to heal just kinda sucks, not as good as healing my team a ton of hp + shield with windspeaker's blessing every 4 seconds...

Sona's not even a playable character. She's factually the weakest character that can be played into the support role. Even competitive League proves this: she's picked by professional players less frequently into support than any other character, either support or off-support. Taric sees more LCS play than Sona, Kayle and Syndra see more support picks in LCS than Sona. In general, her viability is amongst the bottom 5% of all characters in the entire game.

Why is this? Because her bases, scalings, CC and utility are each the lowest amongst the entire support class. She has less damage than all other supports. Her heal is the weakest in the entire game and the most mana-expensive. Her stats are worst-in-class. She completely lacks mobility. She is the only support champ in the entire game without reliable pre-6 cc and has less pre-6 cc than any off-support. Even her ult is one of the weakest amongst all supports and has a very long cooldown to boot. To top all of this off, not only is she the only mage support in the game with melee-range spells, they actually make up half of her entire fucking kit.

The best supports that can fit into any team are the cc playmaker type supports. I'm talking Thresh. Thresh is so much more than just the hooks and lantern. He's got lane poke, engage, disengage, lock down, and a shield. When the thresh is good you KNOW it because he pulls the jungler into lane with the lantern, he flays people off or into your team perfectly every time, and he gets those sweet sweet god hooks.

Sona is flexible, like Morgana. Morgana can zone and poke, she can stun/slow and she can shield her adc from spell effects. She can wreck lane with the right adc and she work well with just about any adc.

Sona can heal, speed up to peel/engage, poke damage and has a beefy stun as well. Her passive spellchords are more art than a science but damn when you get a sona that knows how to work those babies in right. Her cons are that she is super squishy, fairly mana heavy if you're just a spammer, her heal isn't really super strong like soraka, her only REAL cc is her ultimate and the adc has to know the auras to really respond to them correctly in the situation. Sona takes a bit of communication to really shine. She's a jack of all trades.

Soraka is super strong if you max W first. I always max it first. The slight hit to my HP is compounded towards those intense heals. It's a real force multiplier maxing w over q first. Her global heal and her e silence is also very sought after. You can basically totally shut down a Leona from diving with well timed e's.

Nami has been a personal favorite of mine recently. Great poke AND a heal that bounces all in one spell, a dmg buff for three hits, a speed boost on every skill cast on an ally, a hard cc bubble q and an ult with a long range and knock up WITH a speed boost for added bullshit.

Want something purely defensive and you get braum.

Want hard engage you go with Leona and blitz.

You want to watch a clusterfuck of monumental proportions then you watch a good thresh with a bad adc that doesn't know what a lantern is aka Thresh Tears.

Every support has a certain niche they fill or are an all around champ that works with most comps and a preference for particulars but not limited to them.

So saying one is better than any other or is "best" is basically non-existent. They're all my favorites.

It depends on who your Adc is i personally prefer Braum Alistar Morgana Bard they just bring too much to the table to choose somebody else over IMO

Sona does a good bit of damage with a Q that I only have to get close to let lose, then follow with a power chord auto attack and it outpokes any other support I have picked. I can sufficiently heal in lane all game, and after max CDR my heal is nearly always up, and with some AP and points in it, it heals a ton. Late game I can do all kinds of carrying with Sona, I make people unkillable with constant heals and speed and the occasional ult to tip the tides. She doesn't have melee ranged spells either, the Q has a pretty good poke considering it goes through minions. I see Sona excelling because she is the jack of all trades and in late game she can use it all for serious business. I do love my Thresh plays though, and if my team needs a tank he's my go to guy, but Sona is my number one pick stil for now.

There is no "Best Support," there is only just what support is needed for the type of team comp you have and how you help fit in that role. Some champions do their role better that others, but at the end of the day, their is no best support, as every game is different and the role you must fill to help your team composition and/or hinder the enemies team composition is different as well.

Ahhhh supports

I prefer Janna/Lulu when I'm playing Vayne or Kog since they just keep you alive.

I like Naut/Blitz/Braum with strong laning phases like Sivir, Jhin and Cait so you can snowball.

Soraka/Sona/Ali kinda work well with anyone.

Kalistar is the best lane imo.

theonlyaustin1 votes

Kogmaw and Braum as well as Lucian Braum is extremely strong at all points in laneing as well

I don't think anyone can offer what Sona does. I have played all of those champs, but they just don't have as much impact. Sona can heal and speed the entire group, and stun the entire enemy team if setup correctly. Morgana is awesome for blackshield and that long snare, but I don't like her ult. My tank support choice is Thresh, and he is about the only other one I consider as good a support as Sona.

Duke Anax1 votes

Sona may be able to do everything, but unliike Thresh who is average in everything, Sona is pretty weak in everything.

Drerawin1 votes

But only in early game. Once late game rolls around and teamfights happen, I literally heal all 5 teammates a lot of health per heal and use my speed to engage or disengage.

Duke Anax1 votes

If anything Sona is stronger in lane, because she got nice early game poke and when she got more skill than the enemy she can do some serious damage. (personally I think Soraka does even that better though)

In Teamfights Sona may become slightly more usefull, but she also becomes a much better target and she is quite easy to take out for most anyone in the game. She may even blow up just from collateral damage.

Drerawin1 votes

I have escaped some pretty hairy situations with her, she is squishy, but only if you catch her.

Nami ?

Outside of the DJ beats and having a solid skin selection, Nami does pretty much everything Sona does but better.

bah, Nami's ebb and flow can only heal two people max. While Sona can heal herself, and ally, and an a Multi man shield that works wonders with Censor and Windspeakers. Not to mention that Nami's damage, and healing are tied to the same CD, while Sona can effectively do both at the same time.

Nami does have Harder CC than Sona, But I wouldn't compare the two.

bah, Nami's ebb and flow can only heal two people max.

Sona's heal can only heal 2 people max...

Not to mention that Nami's damage, and healing are tied to the same CD, while Sona can effectively do both at the same time.

This statement literally makes no sense. And not teenage girl literally, literal literally.

Nami healing and damaging at the same time allows Nami to heal and damage at the same time, where Sona's capacity to heal or damage limits Sona to doing healing or damage at any given time: especially seeing as part of Sona's passive places a global CD on all of Sona's spells. Because Nami both pokes and heals with 1 spell, Nami also expends substantially less mana in-lane to poke and heal than Sona does, because Nami can effectively poke and heal at the same time.

Nami does have Harder CC than Sona, But I wouldn't compare the two.

Why wouldn't you compare the 2?

Both of their kits are almost identical in what they bring to the table. Enhancing allied attacks with magical on-hit effects, 2-target healing, 2-target point-click poke, AA-reliant slows, AoE CC ulitmates, allies speed boosts, support primary, AP scalings, boobs, lack of leg showing...there's a lot of comparisons to draw between both champions due to how similar they are in a large number of categories.

Drerawin1 votes

Sona can heal all 5 allies at the same time, speed them up out of risky situations or skillshots, and her ult is faster, a lot of people can dodge namis ult. With max CDR I heal so often on Sona I keep up that windspeaker's buff almost constant. Once late game she heals so much and so often that it can turn tides of fights. The Q poke is also really strong, stronger than Nami's ebb and flow because you can follow it with an auto attack empowered by power chord for super dmg. Sona also does not have to target for her Q, I just swing by close, auto attack while Qing and it hits people with power chord. Nami is pretty nasty cause the frequent CC, but I like Sona better for 5 man fights because she helps everyone.

Sona can only heal 1 person and herself AT MAX. You need to reread her kit, cause it's apparent you don't know wtf Sona actually does. Or doesn't do, as the case may be. Here, I'll help:

Drerawin1 votes

Yeah, I guess I've never noticed it only healing one person, because I fully heal my group pretty fast... but it does shield everyone.

Pika3104 votes

"Shield" is a strong word. Its duration is considerably less than half of any other support's. Likewise its HP strength is half any other supports' as well(with exception to Thresh's, who's still ALMOST half AND has a higher AP scaling.) All while sporting the highest mana cost out of all of them. Yet in spite of all this, it's also a melee-range shield.

As for the heal, it has both the lowest base and AP scaling of any healing spell in all of League. That combined with the extremely high mana cost and long cooldown, it's impossible to believe you "heal the group pretty fast."

Aria of Perseverance is truly one of the crappiest spells in the entire game. Sona herself is factually the weakest support in the game and this is reflected in her professional record. She's the least-recently champion to ever be picked in support going as far back as patch 4.13. Yet here YOU are pretending this isn't true, when it's apparent that you don't even play Sona. YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT SHE DOES.

For your own sake, I recommend you stop.

Drerawin1 votes

Stop being a troll, please. Everything I have said is valid. The shield and heal are small, but together make a pretty good sustain, especially when I use it every 4 seconds with Windspeakers.

Pika3104 votes

"Small" doesn't begin to describe how bad Aria is. The combined value of both the heal + shield is 65 points. That's barely on par with normal heals and shields, BUT unlike normal heals and shields Aria doesn't have a bonus effect. It's the only heal or shield in the game without an additional effect. Not to mention that OVER HALF of the value is tied to a half-second melee-range shield. And again, it has the most expensive mana cost of all heals AND shields despite BARELY being "meh" at its absolute BEST potential.

Once again you prove that you've never played Sona, since you don't know that Aria has a 10-second cooldown. Even if you reach 45% cooldown, it still only comes up every 5.5 seconds, NOT four like you claim. That's twice now you've blatantly lied about Sona's skills. You've also resorted to hypocritical verbal insults just because I've proven you to be the fraud you truly are.

I don't get why you're being so offensive about this post... as I said I wanted to discuss with people about Sona support, not be berated by some guy who thinks he's a pro. I have played Sona a TON, and the Aria is on a 4s CD after 45% CDR. I have played her enough that every time I push my heal button I look at it and what does the CD timer say?: 4 seconds til it's back up. Mana cost never seems to come into play for me either, so I don't care what the mana cost to heal ratio is, I can spam it and keep my group healed. Also, I am constantly in aura range of the people I support anyway, or within a short distance away, so I can easily get in to heal or speed and get out of range of the enemy still. Also, please don't respond if you're going to be negative about it, I'm only stating what I have experienced with Sona and thus far I have found no one who can GROUP support any better. I could agree that a lot of the supports have better solo lane support potential, but as far as teamfights I pick Sona.

Best Support?

Statistically that would be Janna. Regardless of the reason or the season, Janna has always been good.

Since his release: Thresh has also always been a really solid support, and has some pretty impressive highlight-real potential.

You'd have to give the best support award to 1 of the 2, both have had such impressive performances over LoL's history and have been reliably good for such long stretches of time it's really difficult to not choose one or the other for best support.

everyone always debates when I tell them Sona is the best support.

She's not.

She's certainly not as bad as support Talon and as a support primary she's a better support than a wide range of champions chosen at random: but with her utility scalings she can't use, only having a conditional slow as CC outside of her ultimate, weak bases everywhere, poor choices surviving in an assassin meta, and rework effectivly making her a worse version of Nami; Sona has enough issues she's certainly not the best support and probably never will be. Unless Riot does something like add Innervating locket back into the game at any rate.

Depends on your playstyle and what elo you're in. It looks like you are having lots of fun collecting freelo by just tagging along your (probably stupid) teammates.

She is dependent on her ult, though it's her W that her teammates see the most coming from her.

[slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

Though if I'm going to talk statistics, Janna. Disengage never falls out of flavor unless mages are popular and powerful. If I'm going to talk person opinion, Lulu, because she can do a lot, just needs a brain and an actual team.
