What if Flash could only be used offensively?

Flash has always created balance problems in League of Legends, and at one point Riot even considered removing it entirely. The problem with this is that it would create problems for champions like Annie and Alistar, who are almost balanced around the existence of the spell, and it would also remove a lot of outplay potential in the game.

The current state of flash is not entirely healthy for the game though, and the problem is especially bad in pro play, where flash is essentially a "get out of jail free card" on a 5 minute cooldown, eliminating a lot of the excitement that can result from a well-executed gank that would normally kill a player.

The change I propose would try to keep Flash's ability to allow interesting and unique engages, while eliminating or weakening its use for escaping. How it would function is that every enemy champion would have a line drawn between them and your champion, and from that line, angles would be calculated to allow an "area" that your champion is allowed to flash to. In terms of UI, I imagine it would function like Katarina ult or Sona Q, the Flash icon would simply be grayed out when your mouse cursor is over an area that you can't flash to.

The cooldown would obviously need to be lowered since it's not as versatile, and the angles could be adjusted a bit if Flash is too weak or too strong, but as you can see, Flash is a lot less good at escaping ganks, while still being somewhat useful if used properly to dodge skillshots. Annie, Alistar, and Rakan get to keep their sick flash plays, and ADC's have to play a little more intelligently and keep an eye on the map.

Do you really want people to complain more about getting ganked by jungler's more by having an escape Flash nerfed and an engage flash buffed?

Well this iteration of Flash would still be somewhat useful against jungle ganks, like in the picture Caitlyn could dodge an Olaf axe with it and also get closer to her tower, it just makes it a little less brainless than "flash toward tower as soon as you see the jungler coming". There's also the possibility that adcs would just switch to Ghost and use that to help escape ganks, but ghost is generally easier to interrupt and play around (i.e. Thresh hook works against Ghost, but not Flash). That said, if it turns out that junglers are ridiculously overpowered when laners don't have the old flash, then maybe we could just lower the trinket cd a little bit.

Junglers are in a great position right now, the last thing the game need right now is the removal of an escape.

The problem with removing or nerfing flash is that you just make mobility champions even stronger than they already are. Every champion in the game would have to be tweaked if you changed it. I wouldn't be against removing it and I think it would probably be healthier for the game in the long term, but it would take a massive amount of work.

Not that I would mind Annie being gutted. I can't stand her "instakill someone in a stun with 0 counterplay whenever flash is up" gimmick.

then literally nobody that wasn't smurfing would take it

You argue it well, but letting flash be an escape tool is kinda part of league now. Always having it has let people make clutch plays for a long time, and removing it would make it hard for a lot of low engage champs to even be played any more.

I am impressed with your argument, but remain unconvinced

I feel this would be very confusing for new players, and you can just turn around to use it as a defensive tool.

Maybe they could add a passive that would encourage aggressive play such as gives a stat boost if you use it so it would be better for engaging, but that seems pretty overloaded and even harder to balance
