Mid-laners I would generally recommend players know how to play would include: Jayce Lux Orianna Viktor Anivia Ahri

There is nothing wrong with learning both Viktor and Orianna. You could easily choose between them depending on team compositions, lane match-ups and personal preference.

I would probably wait until tomorrow when they announce the next free champion rotation. If you get lucky, one of them may be available and you can purchase the other to try them both.

Both of them are rather strong at the moment, so I would probably choose Orianna if you wanted a utility mage (shields, engage, initiation) or Viktor if you want mobility and waveclear.

Personally, I think Viktor would be easier to learn.

Viktor will win you more games with less effort, though both are good if you put the time into orianna.

Orianna is hard to learn, but she can litterally peel for her entire team and is one of THE BEST midlane teamfighters out there. She's also good in a 1v1 since she has self peel, pretty good damage, and strong autoattacks. She's easy to cs with, and has great waveclear but doesn't do it in 1 ability like Viktor. She's a lanebully, and her Q+W+AA harass really hurts. The only downside is the ball's movement speed. If you have it on you and you try to hit someone directly, without putting it on the ground first, chances are they'll dodge it with ease. Since the ball's movement speed is so slow, you are extremely bad at chasing, but unless they flash your ult, they'll die and you won't have to chase. She doesn't really have any hard counters, since it's almost impossible to kill her if she has her shield, slow, and ult up. She also escapes ganks really, really well.

idk viktor.

I'd recommend TF for learning honestly. Teaches laning, and map pressure and rewards map awareness.

I really like both but prefer Viktor.
