I HAVE FOUND THE ANSWER TO FIXING SOLOQ RYZE WITHOUT MAKING HIM OP FOR PRO-PLAY *TL;DR BELOW*

A Tiny Floof··41 votes·14,394 views

After dedicating much time to understanding this champion, seeing the changes Riot has made to this champion to target pro play, spamming games til Mastery 7 and perform well enough to be able to win with him in Ranked, (It's still quite hard due to many nerfs) I do now understand after playing him over and over what he needs for SoloQ performance to be a viable pick. It's actually some pretty minor changes but they will do so much for him. I hope Riot will consider them, seeing as they are trying to implement some minor buffs to Kalista to make her better, when they stated they had no long term plans for the champions. (and Azir, but honestly as an Azir main I think he's fine, He's just very skill-based to play properly)

Riot has done a very good job nerfing the PRO ASPECTS of this champion. Focusing on targeting his long-snare combo to be not as strong, since it's accessible very early on, and also targeting his E spread to not provide too much "lane tempo" as Riot put it. I am here to say that those changes were healthy for the champion, however implementing these pro-play changes should allow avenues for his extreme weak points to be addressed. Without his long-snare combo being as strong, and his E spread being much weaker, his laning is just too weak now, but there are ways to make this decent WITHOUT reverting these changes.

First is his laning. Nobody wants to pick Ryze because basically every other champ's lane tempo is stronger than Ryze's current early laning patterns. His E change messed up his early laning presence, and pretty much concedes to his lane opponent almost always, assuming equal skill levels. He's limited to his range, doesn't do a lot of damage and doesn't really ever have any wave pressure until he completely finishes either ROA or Archangels, say around 12-15 minutes. I would propose lowering the early mana costs of his spell flux, just by 10, **considering that the gratification of this ability has now been subdued, **and runs OOM almost immediately just trying to keep up with CSing or contesting any lane pressure (let alone having less range to do so as well against other mages) Next are his auto-attacks. They are both too weak and too slow. (He's not Karthus where he can get away with not autoattacking ever) and since he needs to build tear first, and the nature of the champion in general being a Mana-pool champ, he doesn't like to grab doran's ring first, so his last-hitting feels atrocious like he's throwing feathers at minions. Him being able to at least have enough AD and attack speed to catch minions without throwing a spell flux just to keep up with catching CS in time is what I would see to be very beneficial to his laning.

The next change that needs to be addressed is his ultimate. The first level of his ultimate is a complete joke. Nobody feels good about leveling it, and even pros have shared their thoughts on how troll his lvl 1 ult feels. Riot has made Ryze's R the only ultimate in the game that can only be leveled twice, instead of 3 times. and compensated with being able to level Q 6 times, with Q maxing out at 185 dmg max rank. Riot has experimented with some massive changes to Ryze's ulti that never went through months back. They tested with giving Ryze around the same range as TF's ult level 1 and 2, and massively increased the cooldown, but they ultimately decided not to go through with this, I'm assuming because it's also a group teleport and the manipulation it can cause early on with 5500 range is just simply too much; However, 1750 range just does not feel any good at all for both self-usage, and the team. On top of it being way too difficult to "use properly" even when you do, it feels like a huge joke to jump such a short distance and be on a 180 second CD. The proposed change I had in mind was the make his R the only one in the game that you ONLY HAVE TO LEVEL ONCE at level 6, and give the ultimate it's level 2 value at lvl 6, when it actually feels useful at 3000 range and 180 CD, but not overbearing, and to give that extra level to his Q, maxing out at 210 damage rank 7, and yet still being weaker than Ryze's first iteration of his maxed Q on this rework's release. (185 damage/100% E amp /50% MS On-Release level 6 Q to 210 damage/80% E amp/ 43% MS Proposed change level 7 Q) but not as weak.

_TL;DR - Proposed Ryze changes for SoloQ performance are as follows: _

Base attack damage increased from 55 to 58

Base attack speed increased from to 0.625 to 0.675

Q - Overload Can now be leveled 7 times

Damage changed from **60 / 85 / 110 / 135 / 160 / 185 ** to 60 / 85 / 110 / 135 / 160 / 185 / 210 Movespeed % changed from 25 / 28 / 31 / 34 / 37 / 40% to 25 / 28 / 31 / 34 / 37 / 40% / 43%

E - Spell Flux Mana cost changed from 60 / 70 / 80 / 90 / 100 to 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 / 90

R Realm Warp - Is now only leveled once, Covering 3000 units at level 6 from 1750/3000 level 6/11

After playing many games as Ryze, and seeing the direction Riot wants to steer him in, these changes, in my humble opinion, address the correct things about Ryze without turning him into a powerhouse in pro-play, but make him good enough for SoloQ

Thanks for the read.

Ryze was okay in pro play in his current state.

How in the world does strictly buffing each ability going to make him worse in pro play?

Also Ryze is a champion that is too good in not only pro play but in any high elo, low ping environment. He’s kinda weak now, but even when he’s 47%/46% win rate he’s still good in Korean Challenger. His waveclear, gank setup, and splitpushing is all way to good.

I remember when Ryze was brain dead, I used to play him, anyone could, it was fun

why does he have to be only accessible to 1% of the player base?

This is what the OP said

Riot has done a very good job nerfing the PRO ASPECTS of this champion. Focusing on targeting his long-snare combo to be not as strong, since it's accessible very early on, and also targeting his E spread to not provide too much "lane tempo" as Riot put it. I am here to say that those changes were healthy for the

they already nerfed the pro play. because now you can't snare as much, and his E spread is down so you can't get lane tempo with the suggested buffs, overall ryze will be buffed but still be nerfed in pro play COMPARED TO what he was before the snare and spread nerfs

OP isn't trying to make him weaker in pro play, he's suggesting ideas on how to make ryze better for your average player, while not over tuning him for pro play.

you have to understand that what makes champs like Azir and Ryze strong are the decision making and the combos, and the PURE mechanics and map macro

Base attack damage increased from 55 to 58
Base attack speed increased from to 0.625 to 0.675 this is not going to buff ryze in pro play. they already CS perfectly and they never even fight in lane, meaning anyone can hit 10 cs a minute but what it will do is buff him in regular play

Damage changed from 60 / 85 / 110 / 135 / 160 / 185 to 60 / 85 / 110 / 135 / 160 / 185 / 210

a Damage buff is not what makes champs like Azir and Ryze so good in the right hands, but it does give noobs something, again Azir and ryze work on positioning, map awareness, pure mechanical skills, combos.

Movespeed % changed from 25 / 28 / 31 / 34 / 37 / 40% to 25 / 28 / 31 / 34 / 37 / 40% / 43%

no clue how this affects pros. as for the -10 mana, it only really affects early game and again pros are gonna get the CS and trades regardless

R Realm Warp - Is now only leveled once, Covering 3000 units at level 6 from 1750/3000 level 6/11

maybe a good middle ground for this would be that it can be leveled at lvl 8-9, I saw one ryze main on tyler1's stream, he was like in challenger and the ryze never leveled up R until like lvl 10/11 because that's how weak lvl 1 R was

Ryze main here, In His current state, There are champions that do Ryze's role better than him. The only reason you pick Ryze is if you like playing him more than other champions, but other than that there is no reason to pick him (in solo-Q) over other options.

Starcraft243ver1 votes

I dont see why every single champion should be a soloQ god. Some champion synergises well and need top notch teamplay to shine, I think people should stop asking riot to make every champion the same.

If you'd listen to the board you would nerf every champion's strength and buff their weaknesses to the point they would all be generalists with the same resistances and damages output.

Im not asking for any of that, I'm just asking for my champion to not be inferior to all other champions and be PLAYABLE in a SERIOUS RANKED ENVIROMENT. He's not even that good in proplay anymore, the only reason he's picked is because his ultimate is sometimes useful, but even then his counter-picks are so much stronger than he is so why bother???

If you'd listen to the board you would nerf every champion's strength and buff their weaknesses to the point they would all be generalists with the same resistances and damages output.

I actually think the boards are mostly stupid, also this has nothing to do with our conversation.

Because anyone can take the time to train and try to master him.

sure, you won't find me complaining about how azir is high skill cap. because Azir was released that way and hasn't changed

but Ryze has gone through multiple reworks, and the first ryze was brain dead, I think the argument would be whether or not it's fair for riot to change a champions skill cap from 1 to 10

you have to understand there are ryze mains who are now gone because of how hard he is you should also understand that an ultimate like Ryze's that relies on your teammates map awareness as well as your own will NEVER be as effective as pro play, simply because chat > pings, typing > pings. this isn't even mentioning the obvious "you'd have to rely on teammates." LOL HAHAHAHAHAH rely on teammates below challenger to get above 50% winrate, good one.

yes I've seen a late game ryze and he does tonnes of damage so I'm not saying he's completely team reliant, but he's more team reliant than he used to be ALONG WITH going from a skill cap of 1 to a skill cap of 10

I just don't think riot should be doing as many reworks as they do period. it alienates thousands of league players who have mained that champ

MORE CONTEXT on the +3 AD and .5 AS changes

If you've played Ryze more than 5 times in laning phase, you would understand why I proposed those AS/AD changes. It's all for just being able to last hit minions better considering they want to restrain Ryze from being able to autopush lane without interaction with his E, and also grab mana crystal instead of dorans ring, but now it's gotten to a point where he can hardly even push, let alone use spells in lane without going OOM super quick until Archangels. The AD/AS changes have no way of interacting with other champions considering his kit is completely a spellslinging kit.

He will absolutely not be able to bully top laners with these changes. Remember the part where I always imply "assuming equal skill levels"

The only people that play melee champions that let ranged champs constantly hit for free are simply inexperienced players. Sorry not sorry. That is just simply not a realistic situation at all. By that logic, Caitlyn/Vayne/Varus would be freelo insane since they start with 70+ ad and .7 AS, but again, they are not. You know why? Because either REAL top laners who play melee champs for a living know how to deal with ranged champs, or the wave will just naturally push in and the ranged champ will be too exposed to ganks, and if the ranged champ falls behind even once in the range/melee matchup, the melee will just walk on top of your minions and deny YOU from last hitting and go in when you try to CS, but yes, 58 ad is going to break Ryze for top lane. It's like people forget that minion aggro exists as well lmao.

I honestly have some issue about Ryze AD going up because it could actually make him more viable in the toplane as an abuser than anything... I think the AS buff is fair tho, it is a nice idea.

His ult being 3000 range is bonkers at lvl 6 XD Just make it scale with level or go with a simple buff like 2000 at lvl 1 (it is actually big without making it TOO big) to help it. I assure you 3000 range ult lvl 6 is bonkers for pro play and would break the poor boy.

I am glad that you are apparently emotionnal and unable to like have... an objective view?

Ryze isn't taliyah, galio or Shen because they all have global/movement ultimate.

Ryze can make his WHOLE team move with him. His WHOLE Team

It mean he can bring a initiator with him behind the ennemy team and totally fuck a carry positionning for example. He can also decide to not do it or to let his tank go alone while he stay in the other side. It is like saying that Annie and Leona should be compared because they both have a stun in their kit...

But again, if you can't even understand that point, I don't even see how you can talk about balancing Ryze. Especially when he has many other strength that goes in his kit.

You seem to be missing a huge point here that you're not thinking about.

EVERY global champ brings some sort of niche OTHER THAN the fact that they can have global presence.

ASol can appear somewhere unexpectedly PRE-6 and also not have a cast time for using the ability, which creates in-combat effectiveness as well for escaping a bad situation.

Galio can appear somewhere with ALSO providing a huge AOE knockup radius followed by an AOE taunt chain CC combo if his ult lands, completely decimating a teamfight.

Shen can appear somewhere with ALSO providing a huge shield to a priority target being focused out, shutting down the assassination and turning the fight around.

Taliyah can appear somewhere with ALSO cutting off terrain, or simply to cut off someone's escape route from afar that doesn't have dashes/flash, ensuring the kill.

Tahm kench can appear somewhere with ALSO having an extreme range advantage in comparison to Ryze while still taking someone with him, as well as being a similar interaction with his W where it can quickly save a teammate without delay and make them untargetable, as we've seen in LCS.

Twisted Fate can appear somewhere with ALSO providing TRUESIGHT to every enemy on the map, exploiting the positions of crucial stealth champs like Twitch/Eve/Rengar as well as guaranteeing if teleporting in is a good play or not depending on enemy jungle distance from a lane.

There is Value that comes WITH their ultimates. They don't "just appear", so Ryze should have a meaningful enough niche on his own that isn't heavily restricted by 1750 range. 1750 is a joke. You have to remember that it's only 3000. All the other champs get more. For crying out loud when he's 6 he has to walk all the way down the river and miss a wave if the play doesn't even work out when other champions can go without that risk.

I think there is no need to buff ryze damage wise. I play him and he seems strong if you know how to play him. I think the only reason he has low winrate is cause people dont know how to properly combo and play with him. Alright bring on all the dislikes.

The Ryze damage buff is an indirect change that correlates with the ultimate only being leveled once now, but remember, this iteration of his Q at level 7 would STILL be weaker than his level 6 Q on release.

The problem is making sure the game doesn't end at 20 minutes because the midlaner is jackshit garbage before 20 min, and even then, if you wanted a late game powerhouse. Why not Cassiopeia?

He is weak to the average non-LCS player. These changes will hardly affect LCS at all, and he's actually been underperforming in LCS too as of lately.

DesperatePower1 votes

These changes will very much effect the LCS, since he has the potential to set up 4 man ganks botlane at level 6.

SUPERX4PANDA2 votes

They need to change his ultimate. His ultimate, along with Taliyah Kalista RekSai (who was changed) were partially broken in pro play due to Ultimates that have much less synergy with the rest of their kit, and give the champion way too much extra utility in addition to what they already have. This is especially the case with Kalista and Ryze, the former of which is a hyper-mobile kiting ADC that can ignore the orb-walking mechanic, but also for some reason is allowed a powerful engage tool. The latter of which is a duelist battle mage that can also teamfight fairly well, but for some reason also has a pseudo-TahmKench Ultimate for his whole team. Ultimates like these lead to a difficult situation where the rest of the kit has to be good enough at what it does to allow the champion to fulfill their primary role (like Ryze being a dueling battle mage), while also having this completely unrelated, very powerful utility tacked on, and if you nerf either side in order to compensate the existence of the other, one of them is going to feel relatively useless and swing the champion to be a low elo dominant pick (battle mage side) or a pro-play powerhouse (Snare and team warp). Changing ONLY his Ultimate significantly to be something that is more coherent with his kit will allow them to spread his potential as a battle mage out over 4 abilities instead of having to Overload (hehe) all of it into 3 and allow him to carve out a healthier potential niche than "is the rest of his kit good enough to warrant playing him for W and R".

Z3Sleeper2 votes

So the solution TL;DR is to buff Ryze in every regard. Aight.

Another Q rank that increases damage and movement speed. Ult rank removed and just added to level 6. E mana cost reduced. Better base AD and AS for last hitting and slapping enemies.

Seems like this will totally not affect pro play.

I think these buffs are actually insane and will push Ryze over the top.

There are no compensation nerfs, only buffs. Nothing to make his early weaker (in fact, early game got buffed because of E mana cost reduction) in exchange for introducing a smoother power curve and more damage and movespeed late.

A Tiny Floof5 votes

There are no compensation nerfs required for him because everything that was already "good" about him has been hit already??? His E>Q damage is lower since release, his W, both naked and empowered lasts less since release, his E CD has been hit, his E spread damage has been hit, and he also can't zhonyas in his ulti anymore. He absolutely is in need of buffs, but in the RIGHT way. Please keep in mind that with the level 7 Q change, it will STILL be weaker than his empowered Q on rework release. And they've already taken so much away from this champ.

OHminus1 votes

Compensations nerfs are required for the pros. It'll be Ryze pick/ban again, especially since you're increasing his ult range at lvl 6.

A Tiny Floof5 votes

There's literally nothing to compensation nerf at this point though. He's already very behind in dueling power against all mages for the first 30 minutes of the game.

Gilgayu1 votes

Before I make a comment, just wondering...

If you are going to write paragraphs, why not in gameplay +?

Gilgayu1 votes

Ryze is actually in a pretty good state right now.

He is mana hungry early to compensate for his good (not amazing, but good) late game teamfights.

He lacks kill pressure against adcs in late games, however, because even if you use q e q w q e q, your damage is still likely to be a little short unless you are really fed.

Right now you also need to be much better your opponent to win your lane. A good ryze can smash yasuo, but a bad ryze will feed the whole enemy team.

His ult is iconic. Its effectiveness, however, is very limited. It is an ability made for pro-play because without better ways for communication, it is almost trolling to follow a ryze into his ultimate...

I think he will be good with some adjustment to his numbers (probably his passive), but beside that he is actually balanced af.

Snowbrand1 votes

Maybe make his W a skillshot like Jhins W for example? I think that would help a lot and could put power somewhere else, and point- and click overall is pretty unnfun to play against

How does this « fix ryze in pro play » when this is straight up a buff though

nm10101 votes

This doesn't really fix anything though. Ryze would still have both lane presence and tempo. He would scale better and have an easier laning phase. I mean the numbers are ok, but you have to understand that Ryze is fundamentally broken by design and number changes are unlikely to be able to fix that.

Dr Poro1 votes

The R range buff would benefit pro ryze players way more than ladder ryze players. It's a team coordination ult, it works better with coordinated teams. That's why all teleport champs by definition see more pro play than you'd expect from their soloQ results. In soloQ, 1v1, 2v2 and 5v5 power are more important. In pro plays, it's more about getting to the number advantage than it is about beating eachother with equal numbers.

DesperatePower1 votes

Also a Ryze main here. A lot of the first stuff is pretty pointless, Ryze's auto attacks are fine, smoother than Karthus or Anivia while rougher than others. I would like them to revert the nerfs to his E (bounce damage, cooldown, mana cost) but I can deal with it.

But, the ultimate change is a no. Does not fix pro play at all and just makes him stronger in that area since they can set up 4 man ganks botlane at level f**king six. And what's the point of giving Ryze good early roaming Ulti when, even with your changes, he'll go OOM before clearing the wave. He still wont out push many mages or assassins. The Ultimate needs to be reworked or something similar.

TLDR, the ultimate needs some major changes or a straight up rework. It is not healthy for pro play.

A Tiny Floof1 votes

These are changes worth trying to attempt to improve his soloQ performance. Nothing here is really crazy and out of the ordinary that's being proposed. He is still a MID-RANGE mage with SOFT CC that can't make too many huge plays unless he has flash like Annie, and even then, it's not AOE unless you spend 4 seconds spreading your E in a team fight. People just don't let Ryze walk into you for free. There are countless champions with higher range and stronger CC that zone him out for going in and that is another reason why is win-rate is so low. These changes will not push him over the edge by any means because the champ has VERY clear weaknesses still. Long-Range mages that outrange him, and assassins that kill him before he can get off a rune-charged shield.

A Tiny Floof1 votes

Furthermore, Ryze is typically relegated to only hitting tanks due to his range constraints. He usually doesn't have an easy time getting access to backlines on his own, and his kit doesn't provide any real tank shred, just base damages. The whole "Machine-gun Fantasy" doesn't feel as reliable as say Azir dealing with frontlines, kiting included. His damage really isn't that insane. And even then, he has no hard CC when most other mages have more range, front-loading, AND CC as well.
