@riot thoughts on 1-30 experience

Dear Riot, After playing a few smurf accounts i wanted to leave some feedback that to me could be improved for brand new players to the rift.

The first and most important thing i want to point out is that the restriction of summoner spells leads to negative experiences. While I can see at a younger point in the game's life I could see how flash/smite etc. may not have been so core but in the games current iteration it seems that not having these summoner spells and possibly your opponents having access to these spells creates games that give opponents an unwarranted edge. for example having a duo top that is splitting cs is very detrimental to the team as it is likely that both champions will not have sufficient income or exp to compete with the solo top/jungler combo of the opposing team.

Relating to this is the restriction of flash, I almost want to make the case that starting lvl 1 flash should be autolocked to your summoner spell bar with an option to switch at 10. flash can prevent early mistakes newer players are prone to make and giving newer players access to an oops button, which seems like it could make for more engaging gameplay at lower summoner lvls.

The other part is Runes and masteries, i believe that giving access to 3 of each rune and 1 quint at lvl 3 could also improve the new player experience. to combo with this you could bundle a starter pack of tier 1 quints and runes that features a "kit" of recommended runes and masteries for whatever role (marksman, tank, assassin,etc.) to guide new players who may be confused on good runes to purchase (even go as far as to link the kit at champion purchase screen).

These changes i believe could avert many of the feed fests that deter new players from continuing their journey to lvl 30 of the rift. I know they are not perfect but the new player leveling experience does not seem to have changed much since season 2 when i first did it, and the game has evolved so much since then!

The archaic leveling system should only stay for 1 reason:

IF, and only if, xp boosts are making a lot of money.

Otherwise, it's completely pointless. And it gimps new players who can't learn jungle until at least level 25 or so (assuming they've saved all their ip for runes and haven't bought any champs with it, or bought runes for a non-jungle rune page).

Just unlock all runes and rune spots from the get go. Players would still be limited because of the slow IP grind. As of now, I'll be fortunate to have a full tier 3 rune page that I like by level 20 anyways, let alone have champs unlocked or start building the second rune page... so taking off the level 20 limit doesn't give a smurf account a huge advantage. If anything, it gives the new players a chance to do better and therefore enjoy the game more often. Access to other maps and game modes can easily be blocked by adding a requirement of number of games played, or number of wins. With the team builder system, you could make it so you need x number of games or wins per "role" before unlocking ranked, or each game mode that currently has a level block on it. This would also solve the problem with people not knowing how to play every role before jumping into a ranked draft pick.

More options for new players means they might be willing to splurge more cash on RP because they'll be able to do more, so whatever money you're making from xp boosts will find it's way back. Besides, people who actually spend money on xp boosts probably spend it on other things as well so they'll just spend more on those other things instead of xp boosts.

Agreed. If they DON'T make runes and runepages free when HotS is released, they will lose the new player market.

Not necessarily free. Just allow new players to buy them. Leveling to 30 is incredibly painful when you're getting matched with people who have tier 3 runes and champs unlocked, and you're already behind at the 5 minute mark. Leveling is an archaic system that should be removed. This isn't an RPG where new expansions are released all the time and you need to get 10 more levels for 10 more mastery points. In league you hit 30 and that's it. The number of levels hasn't increased and probably won't anytime soon so why punish new players and make it harder for them to enjoy the game?

HotS will take a lot of new players regardless. Give them a reason to come back and make some simple changes to the leveling system.
