Is the new meta actually fun or terrible?

So I've been playing a lot more League recenty but I find the game less and less appealing... With the patch 8.11 the meta shifted to a clown party where everyone just plays bruisers on each lane, and where the AD carries are rendered useless, except 3 champions. Also a lot of unexpected changes happened on the pro scene aswell... It might've happened eventually, but seeing my favorite and arguably the best players get benched, is just .. sad. Personally I really don't like the new meta and I hope there will be changes soon, both in terms of champion balancing and item changes. Am I just bigot, or do others feel the same way aswell?

As a support player, i have infinitely more fun supporting an irelia or yasuo than yet another ranged auto attacking AD champion, so yes.

KlydeFrog3 votes

And has nothing to do with "meta".

The question was if the meta was fun or bad, as if it cannot be both. Their answer, based on having a non-auto attacking duo-partner, is that the meta is fun for them.

It's fucking terrible and its not even the meta or some roles being bad. You can make any role work provided you pick a champion that can chunk 3/4 of your opponent's HP in one combo + keystone proc before level 6. It feels shitty being forced to play like this if you want to win. You just cannot win off of pure macro and brainpower anymore due to the presence of a stupid amount of damage in the game. The game has turned into a braindead 20 minute slugfest starting at level 1 and not ending until one team /ff's. Towers are fucking paper so things like splitting are rewarded less now, because chances are, if you don't stay with your team, they will get 5v4 dived and the enemy will be at your Nexus before you know what even happened.

I'm a jg/top main, and I feel the only way I can play in this meta is to pick absurd champions, keystones and, runes. In top, I'm usually forced to play lane bullies like Renekton that can one shot with ignite at level 3 and in jungle, I usually take electrocute Jax with Ignite + Smite (massive mistake on Riot's part for buffing Ignite btw; fucking braindead summoner spell that just worsens the stupid damage in the game) for those level 4 gank one shots. It's fucking stupid and I hate it; I don't feel like I'm outplaying anyone at all when I oneshot them at level 3. Hell, whenever I go up against cheese like this I'm tempted to just quit.

I wish they would lower damage by alot.

This is why people complain about ghostcrawler, he is often blamed for over simplifying games design... We need morello back...

I actually almost rage quit, I've been here since season 1 and it would have been the first time I've ever done it.

GayFluffyUnicorn1 votes

Is it really cheese when it's the actual way to win the game? I've been exclusively running ignite toplane and i'm actually thinking of just going electrocute on kled.

Lanephase doesn't matter. All that matters is me getting fed and permagank other lanes until we can finally aram. Don't really consider it cheese anymore there is just no use in taking TP in low elo. Noone wards anyways or reacts to tp flanks. You'll lose a bit of CS depending on your backport timings but that is made up by kills. Other benefits of tp? Having impact? What toplane impact, there is none. So i can only hope to get fed af.

but there has always been a high level of something to complain about in this game, its either "champions are too mobile, X champion is too op, or X role is overpowered" and while im not a fan of the high damage values in the game your examples above only hold true for you. personally its up to the player to enjoy the game through the use of keystones and masteries not riot.

Riots job is to provide us with the tools to win or at least try to, and its up to us to figure it out. That being said as a person who doesn't follow any form of pro or build path I enjoy myself more when I can relax and focus on the champion im playing rather than look at my champion as a set of items, sure I look at the items I buy but im not afraid to experiment "because ill lose" so what, the only time I get upset about losing is when Its clear that there is zero chance of victory and my team is more or less getting curbstomped before 15 and we cant even pop a surrender "yes its happened". In addition it doesn't matter how braindead an ability or spell or champion is, when used improperly its about as effective and trying to ignite baron.

I just see damage galore right now, which I don't see as very fun.

In my four years of playing, this season has definitely been one of the years that I lacked any motivation to play; granted, it's only halfway through the season, but if nothing changes then there is no way my playrate is going to go up :(.

Hate it damage is to high

limebuster5 votes

I feel like it’s a shit show tbh, I can’t play anything that scales late game because of how fast games end and this whole thing with making more roles viable bot annoys me because the adc’s they nerfed arent viable anywhere else

RenownedWheat424 votes

God I love the meta right now.

The Space Cowboy4 votes

More fun except turrets and baron need a buff

IcyPepper4 votes

I'd say both tbh.

As a support main, it's fun and exciting to have different classes to support. Most marksman play similarly, with some variations (the main variable is which part of the laning phase they're strongest and duo kit synergies).

For instance, playing Pyke with my friend as Mordekaiser versus a marksman and a ranged support is one of the most pulse-racing lanes I've ever had. Or playing against a Lux and Morgana bot lane, making it DODGE CITY.

So, like, it's insanely. Each game has the potential to be different, exciting, thrilling even if I win or lose!

But, that's because I'm a support main. Not all ADCs are capable of playing other classes in bot lane, as it's an entirely different playstyle even if they know other champions! Power spikes are different, kit synergies can differ... so many different variables.

I'd say that there's potential for people to get used to it, the dust to settle down, and Riot balances bot lane appropriately with new classes in mind. If that happens, I'd say the meta has potential to be fine. Rather than terrible, I'd say it's merely chaotic. But that's just the metagame. It's the marksman balance that's terrible, as it's highly skewed to a few picks and the rest are kinda subpar. That's the part I'm not okay with.

Mast3rShake1 votes

so you basically play to either snowball or get snowballed and that is what makes the game less fun. when i go into a game now my mindset is that we are wither gonna roll bot lane or get rolled, there is really no in between.

Had a game recenty where i went adc ziggs. we took the first turrent, backed, took mid, then walked up the river and took top. we took all three in three minutes, taking a fourth and then rift herald in the next two minutes. by 18 minutes they lost five towers. they couldn’t do anything to stop us. that isn’t fun for anyone

HonestJohnTheCon4 votes

I like that other classes are now viable bottom, but now Riot needs to work on making Marksmen viable in other positions.

EXP funneling is one of the most atrocious things to play against that I've ever played, and I've played this game for 5 years

GigglesO2 votes

I've played since season 1, I hate this alot. I really wish I wasn't addicted...

Damage is too high to do anything. If the enemy even looks at you funny you just die... It isn't fun.

Jaygo413 votes

The idea of just watching a Yi walk back and forth and farm jungle AND mid lane, only to not be able to be counterjungled because they can run or Yi beats the opposing jungler 1 on 1 with conqueror. It's like, "This is what I'm going to do. What are you going to do about it? Nothing. You can't."

GigglesO2 votes

Armor isn't a viable option now either. It used to be that you could get defense and force a longer trade... now its just really fast death...

Eternal7913 votes

I mean, it allows me to try things like Urgot or Camille bot and have it actually work, but as a long time Jinx main, I kinda hate this meta.

Wind2343 votes

On the one hand, I actually do appreciate the diversity we've been seeing as of late. It's fun and interesting seeing champions get taken just about anywhere and it could potentially work. We've got Taliyah as a top tier jungler, Yasuo and Mordekaiser as two of the best botlaners right now, and people can pretty much play anything anywhere. I know a lot of people were complaining about how marksmen were mandatory in every game because their items were just too good, but now that they've been handily nerfed, they've become optional like a lot of people wanted.

On the other hand, there's some real cheesy things going on that aren't exactly fun for anybody, like gold funneling and one-lane fiestas. Since I mainly play mages and marksmen, I feel like I personally am not having a whole lot of fun with this crazy meta because my champs are the ones who have suffered the most in it. With assassins and bruisers literally everywhere now, I get my butt kicked more often than not and it isn't very enjoyable. That and with how snowbally the game is right now, I don't have the time to scale up like I used to.

So while I don't mind it that there's a wider range of champions who can play anywhere, I don't think that it's always a good thing (just look at Yi-Taric, for example), and I'd have to say that I personally don't think I'm liking this very much. But I'll also admit that there's a bias on my part there because I don't like the fact that the champs I like to play feel pretty useless right now. If there are some balance changes to bring some of the more oppressive things down or bring some of what's struggling up to par, then I won't mind it so much. But with all these mobile bruisers and assassins bouncing around, all my poor immobile squishies are not having a good time.

This meta is disgusting. Skill is completely irrelevant, all that matters is who gets the more broken team is champ select, unless they intentionally throw.

Games are decided in 10 minutes Talon, Kai'Sa and Zoe are strong (Talon actually 31 OTPs in Master/Challenger, ridiculous he isn't nerfed yet) Bruisers like Camille and Irelia are being played People explode in 2 seconds (thanks to these retard champions being played)

hm... besides ranked where you always have a random sup which is just hard to communicate with... i think that every new champ has too many skills (just look at camille, every skill has a huge wall of text and usually 3-4 different effects) and kinda fucks adcs.

unless you have a really good shielding/healing sup, theres just this rengar on the enemy team that goes 0/10 and still 1shots you.

also adcs arent that strong pre ~40min. and games end too quick these days

ALSO WHICH I HATE THE MOST i run around with 90% crit chance and dont crit my enemy 5 times in a row... the enemy has 30% crit chance and crits me 3 out of 5 aa's. i hate my luck.

I understand man,i have the same feelings, especially about supports,it seems 9/10 times my supp ends up feeding, inting, leaving me alone,or afking, also yeah a 1/7 yas sees you alone and flashes on you to kill u no matter how fed you are. But i still play them and enjoy them,if you want my 2 cents this is what i do.

Firstly play adcs you feel comfortable with, from your reply i see youre like me,you hate being reliant on your supp and useless in 1v1 situations, just play things like Vayne Kaisa Lucian Ezreal Draven

Secondly,i see you bought in the myth of adcs having to be full glass canon, which isnt true even in the lcs where you have perfectly organize teams and proffessional supports, start buying item 3047 item 3026 item 3139 item 3156 item 3072 item 3046 I build usually at least 3 of these items every game and it feels great, you can almost see the look on some Irelias face when she starts diving you and you refuse to die and are 2x harder to kill than regular build adcs, you dont even sacrifice more than 10,15% of your damage but you get so much more surviveability you more than make up for it,try it out if you want and let me know

I agree 100% this is not a fun season, I enjoy maybe 1 in every 10-20 matches. Even if I am ahead and winning I am not having fun. This whole season has been complete shit, I miss the long close games that seasons 3 and 4 brought, even season 6 and 7 was better then this garbage fest.

New meta is terrible, not necessarily because of the diversity (which is good) but mostly because pure enchanters are useless while many champions are doing assassin level damage and also things like nearly unstoppable yi are in almost every game.

I have mixed feelings. I'm enjoying myself because I'm learning a new one trick and learning how to lane for the first time in the years I've played ( only 4 ish). On the flip side I think the new jungle changes affected how much I enjoy it. As an udyr main it's not so much that it's bad if anything the changes actually are in my favor but I don't feel like I'm having as much fun which is why I've been practicing laning ever since I hit plat.

I don't know what it specifically is but jungling to me doesn't feel as satisfying anymore.

GayFluffyUnicorn1 votes

I definitely enjoy it way more than the last 1 1/2 years. Might be because i finally have some agency back now that ADCs are finally kinda balanced again.

If riot now tones down the powercreep in the game and stops shitting on toplane in every other patch this game might actually be ´playable again.

I think the perfect explanation of the current patch is:

"We landed on a beautiful island that we only dream of. However, we crash landed."

I dont like it. LoL lost the whole concept of positions. Now there are just OP top tier champs that everyone picks, no matter where you go.
