It is time to address the afk problem

TLDR find a solution for afks

Any toxic experience can easily ruin a game. Riot is constantly trying to eliminate that toxicity, and they have been improving the situation a lot. Verbal abuse is getting more and more punished with chat bans and 14 days bans. Though I agree that verbal abuse makes the game very unfun, I think there is a bigger problem that we need to address, the afk problem. There has been many discussions about it, and the solution is definitely harder to find than just bans. However, I really feel like the problem is getting bigger and bigger and Riot needs to find a solution. People have been complaining about it for 5 seasons and now more than ever. The quality of League of Legends is on the line. I hear people say that League has become shit only because of afks. I've never experienced so many afks before! For example, I've played 12 games today and had 6 people going afk on my team and 1 person going afk on the enemy team. That makes 7 afks out of 12 games. And, people might say I'm unlucky, but everyone I know is complaining about people going afk a lot of games in a row or a big percentage of their games. And that's not counting the intentional feeders and troll builds. The 4 vs 5 lead to a lot of toxicity because they straight up annoy people. This is not a rant thread. I really want to find a solution to this problem and maybe Riot can join the discussion. I feel like any system against afks would be better than nothing at all.

What can we see in other similar games? I don't really play other similar games, but here's the deal (correct me if I'm wrong). Dota 2 > If your team has an afk, he has 5 minutes to reconnect. If he doesn't people have the option to leave the game and the leavers will be replaced with bots that your team can control. Pros: No penalty for leaving, no time spent stuck trying to win a 4 vs 5, having a bot is better than nothing at all. Cons: Toxic people could try to make someone afk, premades could afk for one another, most likely people will leave the few 4 vs 5 that could have been won Hots > Leavers are replaced by bots that your team can control. Idk what they do in other games but you can add to the list.

{quoted}

Heroes of Newerth: Afk more then 5 minutes gives the teammates ability to kickvote the person out of the game, giving them reduced loss if they lose the game, and more if they win the game 4vs5. The enemies gets the same win-price/loss-price as normal. (If the game is 3vs5 or less, the teammates gets too leave the game free without punishment)

The price/loss system is based on how many players are playing versus eachother. (so 4vs4 and 3vs3 would be equal win/loss etc.)

Win/win for both, works well and something i'd like here in LoL. I merged from HoN for about 2 weeks ago and i've never experienced so many AFK's in a while. As long someone even get butthurt once or die by their own mistakes, they leave the game lol. bunch of insecure crybabies.

They also have "Leaver percentage" on the players accounts, which means that you have to play some unranked games if it gets higher by time.

INB4 > the anti-afk system can be abused blablabla

Any system can be abused. As if winning 5 vs 4 is not abusing the system.

What are our ideas? I don't think the League bots are good enough to be controlled by the team without being more of a burden, so I would ditch that idea. However, the leaving with no penalty is actually something that could be implemented. It would go like this: The afk leaves, and is punished with LP loss and a long timer (like 24 hours) from queuing back in ranked. If the afk was premade, then he also receives a punishment (maybe less severe, lets say half the LP loss and the timer). If the people repeatedly go afk, the LP loss and timer become higher, eventually leading to a leaverbuster ban. Other players from the team can leave with no penalty, like a loss forgiven. Enemy team is awarded a certain amount of LP.

Thoughts?

Riot, please can you concentrate on a solution for afks? Instead of releasing skin after skin, instead of reworking Fiora , Darius , Garen , Mordekaiser and Skarner , instead of releasing the Black Market game, can you please concentrate on fixing issues with the game that are more prioritary? I think the community would appreciate the game even more with a good system to deal with afks and is willing to wait for reworks and skins.

We have some decent afk systems in the games Lluvia and Zmmby named. League is older than the majority of them. I can't believe League doesn't have its own. I think Heroes of Newerth's afk system is more applicable to League's situation.

People who do skins don't do anything about the afks.

Still I feel the same way, I know they have separate teams, but to see so much effort being put in the balance and rework teams and so very few in resolving afk problem is upsetting.

Who's to say they aren't trying to figure something out? It is possible that in the silence on this issue they have a team trying to minimize the number of or effect of AFKers but since they haven't made any progress they have yet to make any public announcements.

People have been complaining about that since I started playing around Poppy's release. Less people played the game, but there was pretty much no penalty - so a lot of people were kind of irate about that.

Considering there's 10 people per game: with each player only having a 10% chance to quite a game, you wind up with an astounding ~65% chance a game is going to have an AFK, only a %35 chance without one. (90%^10)

I feel like it's been closer to 50% for me, and minds have a way of exaggerating grievances so it's probably more like 25%: and 25% is still less than a 3% chance for each player to AFK. (97%^10 = ~74% chance for a game to go through)

Even at a 1% chance to dodge per player you've still got nearly a 1/10 chance for a game to have an AFK.

You're talking a really low chance for 1 individual leaving creating a substantial number of games with leavers.

The issue isn't so much a lack of punishment options, rather you're looking at extremely low percentage chances of dodging screwing everyone over. Odds are pretty good the guy you banned from ranked for 24 hours saw his last 29 games through to the end.

30 isn't exactly an impressive number of games to run through to the end, but you could probably chalk 1 in 30 to things like power failure, internet shenanigans, your sister trying to jump over your power chord, Dad interrupting the wi-fi connection with the microwave, Mom demanding you help take in the groceries with the worst timing, Dorm's internet crapping out, etc.

Puts Riot in a difficult spot where any punishment harsh enough to actually boot leavers out of play would, well, probably leave them so bitter they stopped playing the game entirely. And with running the numbers - it's probably fairly average, if not unfortunate, players thinking 1 game in ~30 is OK rather than some chronic troll.

So I'd probably go more in the rewards direction.

What could be cool is sort of a fast-pass deal akin to theme-parks where if you completed your last 100 games without leaving a single one, where you're shot to the top of the matchmaking queue.

A swanky selection of shiny summoner icons for going with 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400 games without leaving could also create enough of an incentive for people to try sticking it through. If achievement systems have taught me anything, it's that even the smallest, derpiest rewards will still encourage a lot of people to do a thing.

If you cant play for 1 hour atleast, you dont queue. Even if it's a family problem coming up or something it's still not a excuse

Yeah, i do get your point but i can be abuse in a easy way since nobody can even prove that something happend so you can just make up a serious issue and leave the game?

TacoTheKitten1 votes

Well yeah but are you more or less likely to believe them if they've been nice and helpful all game or an overall dickwad? It's kind of easy to tell if they're faking or not.

true. as long people can decide if they wanna punish the afk or not

It's because of this problem. I stopped playing ranked. I had done my placement matches and was placed in Silver III. I then decided to try playing more rapidly ked and my next seven games in a row someone on my team afk'd before the minions even spawned. Now I'm Silver IV and I have no intention of going near ranked again for a long while. Crying because your team is down a player feel awful but it's a huge disadvantage and it shouldn't be happening nearly as often as it does.

How about the team with 5 gets to vote 1 person to be locked at base? Keep the game even but this person gets bonus LP/IP? Or like team getting set to a sort of priority list to where players rotate depending on who dies so that only 1 person is stuck at base but isn't always just this ONE person.

Hm....oh well :D
