Is there too many champions in League of Legends?

Kled will be 132 champion in the League. I dont want to be too quick to judge, since we havent seen his kit yet, but i cant help but feel like there are too many champions that fill the same roll and nitsche, and there is allways 1-2 that are better than the other 5(per say), leaving them picked only once in a blue moon only by some hardcore mains. Right now from my experience - only 1/3 of the champion pool is being played, the rest are left somewhere to gather dust, untill some change is made that will do one of 3 possible outcomes:

  1. They become the new best in the said role/nitsche and push the others into oblivion.
  2. They get better , but still not good enough to be considered pickable.
  3. They become completely unpickable - even for mains.

Essentially changing nothing - just shuffeling the "meta".

Leaving the 30(ish) meta champs aside - there are champions right now in such attrocious state that having them in your team feels like handicap and/or playing against them feels like shit.

So as the title says - do you think there too many champions right now? Do you think we need more champions or you prefer the see better balance in the existing champion pool?

@Riot Dont you think that having too many champions is raising the bar too high for new players to start the game? Ergo - Too many champions to learn/get. Keep in mind - there is a lot of grind in this game as it is now - level, champions, rune pages, runes. I tried to get 4 of my Moba playing friends to play LoL - 4/4 when saw the Trump Wall if grind ahead were like : "Fuck this... lets play DotA." (not even kidding).

Please share your thoughts. Cant wait to see what are you guys thinking on the subject. [slayer-pantheon-popcorn]

P.S. As a side question - Do you think we will need more bans if the champ pool keep increasing? Or even - if we need more bans as it is right now?

We need more bans now and more champions.

Your grammar is terrible. Go work on it.

Right now, League's problem is not that the game is imbalanced or too many champions are imbalanced. It's a problem with the community. Most games I play have the same six champions on my team: Lucian, Kha'zix, Rengar, Yasuo, Zed and Jax. If I'm lucky, I see a Jhin or a Graves. People have truncated themselves by picking only the champions that they think will get them all the pentakills to the exclusion of everything else, and they're not even good at that. Entire lanes are flat out abandoned once the laning phase is over, allowing anyone to push the turrets without contest all the way to the inhibitors until an entire team that is absolutely incapable of defending even in the best of circumstances is forced to defend in the worst. They safespace themselves and refuse to deal with half of the roster, namely the part of the roster that can kick their asses; I've seen calls that players should get upwards of TEN OR TWENTY BANS PER TEAM, so basically just never dealing with one champion or another.

I think we should ban the bans. It has encouraged a mentality that players could just hide from champions that make them cry; increasing the number of bans will only exacerbate the problem. If your team picks all ADCs and assassins, you have no right to complain about tanks being overpowered or constantly getting strafed by mages. Your team overspecialized, and unless you were one of the first two picks or the support/ADC, you had an opportunity to notice your team composition and attempt to balance it out. The problem is so severe right now that the support's primary job at this point is to try and balance out the team composition.

The game isn't imbalanced right now. In fact, it's better balanced than it ever has been. Those that deny it either weren't around or don't remember the time before Master Yi's rework, when AP Yi could 1v5 by spamming Alpha Strike combined with his ult and just cut through an entire team while being completely intangible with a 2.0 AP ratio on his heal.

They don't remember the time before Unique Passives when Garen stacked nothing but Sunfire Capes and became a living sun.

They don't remember Jax and his infinite dodge. In fact, they don't remember dodge, period.

They don't remember Poppy ulting the weakest champion and one-shoting everyone else one at a time.

They don't remember Sion and his ludicrious AP ratios, allowing him to hit an enemy for 1500 magic damage without contest, and had 100% lifesteal on his ult.

They don't remember Gragas and his team nuking power with just one spell.

They don't remember Kassadin and his inescapable nuking power.

They don't remember when Talon and Leblanc had silence in their kit.

They don't remember the AP-scaling Ignite Tristana had in her kit.

They don't remember that supports had ABSOLUTELY ZERO SCALING ON EVERYTHING, AND no support items, OR trinkets, OR any gold income.

There's always room for improvement, but the game used to be a lot less friendly. Unfortunately, people have forgotten that. Everything that isn't related to getting pentakills has been forgotten.

I would argue that there are not too many. Most of the new champions are genuinely unique, and do things the others don't. They are strategically unique and mechanically different.
