why do unranked players start off in silver games.

It makes absolutely no sense to me and its just so anti fun for everyone involved. I get that there are smurfs out there, but for a genuine new player, its complete misery for those first 10 games, aswell as very frustrating for the other people on their teams. Example: the average rank was silver 2 in this game and we had a kayle go support, he had warlords mastery, didn't know about support gold items, rushed deadmans plate and to top it off he had 0 runes, on top of his gameplay choices Now i understand you have to judge where these players should play, but why not start them off at the bottom, if it really is a smurf they should climb pretty fast, if its a new player than thats where they will be anyways. Now i know this is coming off as rude but its really bad for the new player, they get flamed like crazy all game, like really badly even though they dont even know what they are doing wrong. After the game I found out that was the kayle's first ranked game and i felt really bad, he got roasted so hard.

You know that's they reason for placement games, they get 10 games to show how good they are. Next game your Kayle will get a lot weaker enemies, if she still looses she will get even weaker enemies.

Riot thinks its healthy for match making to have players enter sliver to get their ass beat down to bronze 5 only to rise from the ashes again ! :D

The majority of fresh 30's don't get demoted to bronze. That's a sign that Silver is a good starting place, i think.

He deserved to be roasted for playing ranked while not knowing what he was doing

Because silver is the statistical average rank based on numbers of people. So it is much better for some to rise and some to drop, then everyone having to claw their way out of bronze.
