A role has nothing to do with meta.
Look at any real life sports. Can you just decide to play with 3 Defense, 2 wings and a Goaler instead of 1 center, 2 wings, 2 defense and a goaler in ice hockey?
No.
Because that's how the game was set. If you want to play with 3 Defense, 2 wings and a goaler, you can do it with your friends or in a league with random people who are fine with it. But if you force it on people and don't play to the role you picked, people are going to hate you and you may just get kicked out of a league for it.
A role in league is similar, when Adellaide got his role in Draft Pick, he clearly got Support. And, just like real life sports, you shouldn't be forcing onto other your way of playing if it affect them negatively enough that you are effectively ruining their own playing experience.
Which champion you play for which role is all up to you.
What a great example you gave us! Maybe I will change your mind after I use your example to it's fullest potential! Ice hockey is a very fast and "roles" in ice hockey are very versatile. When you are attacking everyone is, when you are defending everyone is. Peoples switch roles for a while during offensive actions as well! That is something like roaming support. Or counter-jungling support. One of the reasons why this haven't changed is because of those roles can do multiple things, so there is not really a reason to change it. Playing field is also small, so. But in soccer roles changes, you can even have 11 people in offense! In soccer you can clearly see how "meta" varies from team to team. Back to ice hockey. Do players have restrictions where they can move and what they can do other than fouls and other actions which apply for every single player? I don't know about it, but I can't know everything, maybe, but I think there is nothing like that, expect for goaler, maybe.
Also, have you played in season 1? If so you should remember those times when meta did not exist because game was new. Should we all be punished for playing double carry bot, playing double top without jungler? Of course not, we tried many strategies, we tried our best, for us, for our teammates! Meta is something that works best right now. That's why meta is constantly changing. We already saw double jungle in competitive play, even if it was a fun match, still, they showed us it's somehow viable. Roles are meta! Roles weren't pre-defined. They became meta after some time. But as fast as meta was created it can be changed. Maybe one more jungle change, maybe new items, buffs, nerfs and we may see double jungle in every single game! You never know. So, yeah, roles are meta, because it's something that work the best. Why? Why are champions that rely on spells on middle? To level up fast to get their abilities upgraded and thus deal more damage to enemy. Why we have junglers? To allow top lane farm and also let jungler farm as well, while also applying pressure to other lanes and to secure objectives in the jungle. Support? Because those doesn't need so many gold to work, they enhance allies and doesn't do much damage, but they don't need to, but they also can. While your carry is here because they rely on their basic attack, thus they can split exp with you, but they need gold to get items to increase their damage. That is meta, because it works the best. And also that's called enforcing the meta if you want punish someone who doesn't want to fulfill his role and instead he wants to try something new, maybe somthing that may work as good as meta role.
So, this is enforcing the meta. On the other hand, people who play with you may not like to play according to your playstyle. I sure agree that it can negatively affect them and it also will, in most cases. You have to be versatile, just like in hockey. If people on your team doesn't agree with your strategy, you shouldn't play it. There are 4 people on your team and you are only 1 person. If they all agree, it's fine, but you need at least agreement from your teammates to make it work. Because then they will be angry, tilted, everything and it simply won't work. For him it works, because he is somehow good and won many games like that. But still, those players didn't enjoy that game, simply because of his gameplay. So, yeah, this is pretty much enforcing the meta, and you can't say it's not. But 99,9% players want to play in meta. And I agree with Riot that they have to enforce meta to make sure players won't suffer because of one teammate that doesn't want to play in meta. But, it's in summoners code. This is a problem here, it's the same with laws... So, I agree with you but I also disagree with some of your points. This is a very specific case. Also, I heard that this player was toxic in many games, I don't know about it, I don't know if it's true, but if it is, this may be the real reason for punishment. But I know very little about this case, few videos won't help much.
