Unskilled player seeking teaching

I didn't know where to put this thread, so you can move it if necessary.

Anyway... I am Voyd211, and I have been a League newbie for about two years. Don't be fooled by my summoner level: I got to where I am on the crushed dreams of countless bots. I've played less than 30 PvP games, and dozens if not hundreds of Co-op games.

Thus, I am woefully inexperienced when it comes to facing other players. My teammates often find that I make incredibly poor decisions and stupid builds. I hate feeling responsible for the team losing, but that's how I feel after every lost PvP game.

I want to know how I'm supposed to play, but I haven't been able to find anyone willing to teach me.

My personal hurdles:

  1. I never buy potions. The reason for this is that even when I do, I forget I have them and they end up as an unused waste of gold. All of my healing comes from the fountain and unusually generous teammates.

  2. I don't know how to work alone. I've never been able to do well without a partner, but only bot lane has more than one player. I'm thus stuck with marksman/assassin and support roles, unless mages and tanks can be run on the bottom lane.

  3. Once laning ends, I'm completely lost. I usually end up just walking to the nearest teammate to try and help them, which may or may not lead to accusations of kill-stealing (not intentional) or stupidity (usually true).

  4. I don't know when to engage the enemy champions. Typically, if I'm caught alone against any champion, I devote all of my available resources to escape. It doesn't matter if I'm Jax and the enemy is Soraka, I've never been able to 1v1 and come out on top. I only fight if I have backup.

  5. My opinions on certain roles are very inaccurate. I tend to think of supports and pure-defense tanks as very boring, jungling as impossible to maintain, and Tryndamere as the most terrifying somebeach-somewhere in the League. When I have an ally on hand, I'm an aggressive player, and most tanks and supports aren't good at aggression.

  6. My teammates are often abrasive and impossible to work with. This is League of Legends, and the community is unfortunately the most toxic and unforgiving of any video game. Despite the Summoner's Code clearly stating "leave no newbie behind," most players see poor players and just devote their energy to insulting them rather than giving advice.

I feel like this is important, so here are the champions I own: Annie Annie , Cho'Gath Chogath , Mundo DrMundo , Evelynn Evelynn , Garen Garen , Jax Jax , Jinx Jinx (my favorite character), Kayle Kayle , Master Yi MasterYi , Morgana Morgana , Nasus Nasus , Pantheon Pantheon , Twisted Fate TwistedFate , Udyr Udyr , Veigar Veigar , Vladimir Vladimir , and Warwck Warwick.

Before I address any of these issues, I have two very important questions.

  1. Do you play alone?
  2. Have you tried Team Builder?

Yes and yes.

You should try to find someone to play with, be it a friend from real-life or just one you randomly add from games you've played. The playing and learning experience is much better when you have people to share with.

An important thing you need to realize in order to get better is you must brace yourself for failure, lots of it. Everyone gets owned while they're learning and quite often, you still get owned occasionally once you do get better. The key thing is to shape a good mentality such as, "Wow, this person completely beat me. What were they doing that was so effective? I will do what they do and try to understand it." instead of "Wow, this person completely beat me. I suck."

From the problems you listed, I will give you a basic formula to follow that should help you.

  1. Make Item Sets Pick a few champions you like or enjoy playing; this is very important because you are more likely to get better if you're actually enjoying the character. Of the champions you pick, have a variety that you would run in both duo and solo lanes. Forget sticking to meta picks, prioritize playing what you love and getting good at that first.

  2. First Block of Item Sets = Potions Put Potions first. You can have your Doran's, Flask, whatever you want in that first block but include potions in the Item Set. Seeing Potions at the top of this condensed Item Set page will help remind you to buy them over time.

  3. Play Solo Lanes Sometimes You don't get better unless you try. This applies to everything; Laning, Dueling, Duo Laning, Jungling, etc. From what I've gathered from your initial post, you either don't take enough chances OR you don't know how best to learn from your mistakes. Regardless of which it is, it is important for you to solo lane. How good you think you are is irrelevant; I explain more in the next point. The important thing to note is, you MUST and SHOULD try things out of your comfort zone in order to get better. Doing the same thing nets you zero gain because as the saying goes, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." Once you've tried solo laning a bit, look up jungling and try it out.

  4. Learn from Death, for it is the one true constant of League. Whenever you die, don't get hung up on things like "I messed up." or "This person outplayed me so hard." or "I had no chance at all". This is worthless and helps you achieve nothing. Take time to reflect during death. What could I have done differently? Did I have a potion I could have used? Did I forget to use a Summoner Spell? What if I used my abilities in a different order? Did I really misplay or did I just get outplayed? What was my opponent doing? A specific spell combo? Was it their positioning? Was there an item or level disadvantage? Did I take too much minion damage? Was it due to range? Was it a lack of damage/defense on my part or did my opponent have more damage/defense than me?

  5. Copy to Improve, Mute is your friend Learn by copying what others that have beaten you did. While you're copying them, try to understand why it works. This is the kind of information that is relevant from champion to champion. Look up guides for your favourite champions and find one that suits your playstyle. Don't know what your playstyle is? Play more to figure it out over time, you can do it. Can't stand people that flood chat with negativity? Mute all and use smart pings only. Chatting is optional, pings work just fine.

Unfortunately I do not have the ability to duo with you, but I am on the forums a hell of a lot and I do love helping inexperienced players out. I'd be happy to help. I'm currently Gold III with a little over 1200 normal wins under my belt and I have in fact written several [Guide] posts right here on the Boards. You can find them here. I also heavily suggest to read a Mobafire Guide by TheAllTomato here. That's all, of course, a hell of a lot of reading, which I can understand if you don't want to tackle.

To me it sounds like you need to work on 3 things

Awareness
This comes with simple focus. Of course that sounds easier than it actually is, believe me I know. Always ask yourself questions in the middle of the game. "where is the enemy team?", "How many potions do I have?", "What's my cs compared to my opponent?", "What other lanes are pushing?", "Where is the enemy jungle?". Anytime you answer "I don't know." work to fix that. The more often you practice with that high amount of focus the more reflexive it becomes and becomes more natural.

Confidence
Jumping in right is hard, especially if you don't have the best confidence on your own skill. Try watching how others play their role when they do well. Once you know what to do right and what to strive for you can be a bit more confident because you have a clear cut action to achieve.

Strategy
Lane pushing is probably the first to know of you don't already. Beyond that, things like dragon control, lane rotation and key warding locations are other things to do. Essentially you as a player should never be idle. There is always something to do, and if you're finding yourself coming up short of options to so then that's an area to work on.

I'll be happy to answer any further questions you have as well. ^_^

How can I remember to use potions?

Granted, I usually manage well enough without them, but remembering this apparently all-important thing would be greatly helpful.

A habit I've gotten into is making sure to move the potions to my 1 or 2 key (so it's easier to get to from QWER). With that in mind try to incorporate whatever key you choose into your ability rotation. It's all about building habits. Like say you're going in as Jax, instead of telling yourself to start your dodge --> jump in --> stun, tell yourself to start your dodge --> potion --> jump in --> stun. It's always a good idea to start a potion before an extended fight, you're getting health back in-combat early game, it's really nice.

Otherwise just focus on staying as healthy as you can in-lane. Remember that as long as you aren't maxing out your health a potion isn't being wasted (unless you're getting hit by Grievous wounds, but that's another matter). So it's actually less "When should be using my potions?" and more "When shouldn't I be using my potions?". If that makes sense.

Add me in game, I have no issue playing a few games with you, be it bots to teach you or normals to show/see what I can see to help you improve.

Sometime, quite often, very bad champion lineup can wreck you.

Let's say Draven is the ennemy ADC, whatever your role is on bot lane, if you know you can't trade a good fight against Draven(witch is usually the case), you just need a good comunication/jungler and to not die. (This could happen with any champion who does better on your champion,or if the ennemy is very good at it.)

And above all else ONLY play normals, who cares if you suck its only normals thats what its there for, fear should be reserved for ranked, lol
