Help a noob (2 weeks) to ranked

Hey community,

I joined League 2 weeks ago. As a console peasant coming from the current Paragon Beta (awful state right now), it took me some time to get used to the PC controls after 10+ years not playing PC. I'm currently lvl 20 and will soon be lvl 30.

The thing that will mostly bind me for a long time to league is the competitive and professional aspect. I really would like to play in ranked.

My question What should I be capable of before jumping into ranked?

I know the MOBA strategic basics, roles etc BUT league has 130+ champs (which is insane) with 4 abilities + passive each, lots of items and possible builds. There is no chance to learn all that before reaching lvl 30.

What should I do to "fully" learn league the best way? How long does it take?

I currently main Annie mid and I play a lot of ARAM to get into all the champ mechanics.

Plz tell me about your journey to ranked. I'm happy for every advice offered.

Thx and greetings from Berlin!

(posting on NA forum bc it seems quite more active than the german / EU ones)

dont play rank till you have 1000 games in norms. At least. Thats what I learned.

Jumping right into ranked fresh off of lv30 isn't the most ideal option. MOBA guides would be the best source for ideal and successful builds and the rest comes from honing your play style with that Champion. ARAM is a decent mode to adjust to a champion quickly in a team fighting scenario as are the other Random Gamemode Queues on weekends.

But to answer your question directly as to what it takes to get into Ranked. I'd say at least 3 roles which you feel comfortable with. Know your personal play style. Are you one who likes to carry, just deal damage, or support your teammates? Can you keep a level mindset and not get too uptight when a game isn't going your way? And if that happens, are you able to step away, shake it off and rebound? It sucks to get demoted in a game like this but it happens. Also, the higher you go, the more stable you might want to hope your internet connection to be. Lagging hurts gameplay quite a lot.

I started playing back in Season 3 and I started playing Annie with attack spd items. I didn't know what I was doing back then. Once I got the hang of things, I learned support and jungle but started to find out how toxic players can be for the moves you make. Eventually I started to filter that out and play my game. When I first started ranked, I landed on Silver 5 out of placements. I questioned it and just took it since you know...free border. Each season passing, I just get myself to that silver rank and nothing more due to time, patience, and other activities but I know if I put my mind to it I can climb. Nowadays, I don't play ranked due to faltering net connections. The games I do play I consider each opponent an equal or better than me which helps me find room to improve if it comes down to it.

:( I had so much posted and I pressed a button and it was deleted. SO sad.

Sigh, read this guide: http://www.mobafire.com/league-of-legends/build/lol-essentials-league-of-legends-new-player-beginner-guide-371292

First off, look through the items and be sure to understand what as many items as possible build into and what they do. This info can be found here: http://gameinfo.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/game-info/items/

Second, Runes and Masteries: runes give you free stats and masteries give you tons of super nice passives. Make sure you know what your mastery pages do and what you should run with them especially, since masteries are free.

Finally, farming. You'll need to understand a lot about how to play Annie in the mid-late game to carry, but that's all simple stuff: protobelt in with stun, drop Tibbers, let your team follow up. First, you need to farm. Pros say that you should aim for 100 cs (creeps slain) every 10 minutes, but I would say for now just aim for 60-70 every 10 minutes. I highly suggest you go into custom games to practice this.

Now, I don't play ranked very often, but I know that you can carry a game off a gold lead from a good cs alone. I do not recommend you play ranked during the preseason, however. In the preseason, Riot likes to experiment with a lot of changes, the meta gets shaken around a ton, and this preseason especially you're very likely to get matched up with players who are high up on the ladder due to flex queue being so weird. The last thing you want to do is go into your first ranked placements now, get matched up against diamond players, and get placed in bronze 5, since it uses your last season's rank to calculate where you should be in next season and people always get placed lower than they ended, so you'll be very unlikely to actually climb the ladder above bronze for years and you'll be very unlikely to get placed out of bronze in the future. Make sure you understand more than just the basics before you jump into ranked. My cousin jumped into ranked right when he got level 30, that account of his is still bronze 5, he abandoned it and got placed in high silver his placements on his new account.

Here are a few key aspects that I think are great things that I figured out from playing ranked.

  1. Be able to farm consistently. Aim for 10 cs a minute, Of course this is tough at first but it does really help once you get this down.
  2. Look at the map, ALL THE TIME. You have to be able to constantly look at the map and process what the information that it gives you.
  3. Know at least 3 champs in your main role, REALLY well.
  4. Know** at least** 2 champs in your off role, REALLY well.
  5. Learn some match-ups about your champs.
  6. Know when to take objectives.
  7. VISION. ENOUGH SAID.
  8. Keep tabs on people that are missing and which way they were headed, It helps alot when thinking about when to go in or not.
  9. Know when to push the lane and when to play safe.
  10. Be-prepared for the people. Now i wanna talk about this one a bit. People are going to flame you. You just have to get over the fact that you are new and people won't understand that especially at the elo/mmr you are going to be placed at. This game and its people are very, very toxic if you haven't noticed already you will for sure notice it when you start playing ranked. You just have to ignore it after reading it or if you can't handle that you have to mute them. Yes, some would say this is counter-productive because you cannot communicate with those people but.. honestly its probably better. make sure you tell people that you are new and looking for constructive criticism. Many people won't help you, but you will sometimes get a game and find a really cool dude that will love to teach you. I for example would love to play with you and teach you new things. I am in silver on this account so we could queue together :)

Be sure to add me if you feel like you want to play with me :) Ill keep your name on a note so i don't forget you :)

Have fun my dude :D
