Parents said that League of Legends was ruining my life.

League of legends is just a game right? At least that's what parents say. They believe that videogames are something that takes time away from other, "productive" things we could be doing. Here's my side of the story.

I started league back in September 2012. This was the end of season 3. I got hooked on the game immediately, and spammed normal all day to get to level 30. I remember going through Mobafire guides, youtube videos. Anything related to League - I was there. I'd think about league while at school too. Eventually it became to be a bit of a problem. When I was once a straight A student with AP's and college classes on the side, I began to fail my classes. I would stay up into the early hours of the morning playing. I then started ranked, and hit bronze 5. I was a typical bronze player, ragey , shitty mechanics, no idea what I was doing. I was addicted to league though. My parents made me stop cold turkey for 4-5 months until I got my shit together. After my hiatus, I came back to league. I still played hard, but made sure my school stuff got done. This is where I began my climb, getting into silver, gold, platinum, diamond. My parents still thought that League had taken away and wasted a big part of my life. All those nights staying up playing ranked instead of out with friends. I even thought to myself that I had wasted my entire highschool experience. How wrong I was.

On my EUW account I recently hit Diamond 1, which is a pretty big milestone. Now for lack of time, a lot of this is sped up. It seemed really quick though , right? Bronze 5 to Diamond 1. It took me around 2500 hours of gameplay to get that far. I got into streaming along the way, and started accumulating followers and viewers. I eventually got contacted by boosting companies wanting to hire me, as well as random companies wanting to sponsor me (Eluxy Computers for example). I also heard about League of Legends scholarships, and applied for them. I recently found out I got in, and that I'd be playing for University of Pikeville on a League of Legends scholarship. In my application I put in attention grabbers, avid sponsored streamer , 3rd best vayne NA (statwise), etc. I'm also turning my major (as I'm a college student now) into E-sports management in aims of managing pro teams in the future.

Why did I post this? And again, I know it seems really sped up. My climb on the solo queue ladder, as well as opportunity wise. It took a lot of time to get to this point, a lot of time I could have spent having a girlfriend or going out on Fridays. What I'm saying is, League of legends is not just a game. If you put the time in, some of you can make a career out of it. Not everyone's gonna make it, some just don't have enough time, some dont have enough potential. But I hope this can inspire you to keep playing and play with a deadest purpose.

To be honest people are nowadays living in entertainment materials more for a reason.

Because life is becoming more and more restricting and frankly, boring, making something else more and more appealing.

These days, if you wanna have fun, good luck getting born in the right place at the right time, otherwise good sodding luck. People are now forcibly put into schools and jobs to work for longer and with more work load than they used to, while spending less time to actually live their own life, so ofc people are going with things like games to go by the days of boredom, it doesn't take a genius to figure that out.

What's the point of technological milestones or economical achievements when nobody can use, enjoy or be there to celebrate it?

Society now only teaches people 1 thing, earn big and spend big. It doesn't concern itself with people's actual intelligence, freedom, experiences, equality and the state of the Earth itself. There is a reason why people are achieving less and less in their life as time goes on when we compare to older generations or ancient histories, even when we have tools and technologies that are straight up magic to them. Why? Because life is boring now, everything is restricted and good things are only put into budget for missiles unless ofc, it aids the economy or can be used as a new way to help monitor/restricting you.

Everyone is born into a game where the creator is already long dead and is now controlled by whoever that is currently hosting the servers, there is no option to pass the round and everything is relying on the amount of money/resource you have before you even start the game. It's literally the worst form of any game because it's "free to play but pay to win, subscription fee required but has mediocre content", who the fk enjoys that?

You can't quit either, well you can but you have to die first so yer.

My life literally had and has nothing going on, but I am constantly paying for everything and still got a huge amount of problems and debts chasing after me just because I was born into a game that I have no control over, nor would I wish to stay in this shietty place if I have the ability to.

Hence I can see why you would say that a game is definitely not wasting one's time and it's worth the effort and all that. But not for the same reason though.

For me, games is still after all, games. It's not real so the achievement in the end of the day, for me, is still completely void. I see games as something I play to escape reality with, not something I would like to live in. So I am currently in a position where I literally am wasting my life doing nothing because everything is either a bloody chore of tedious nonsense that gets you no where, not achievable because money or straight up impossible for me considering my age and other personal factors like families and all.

Oh man, the despair of life really is finding something you enjoy but realising it's simply impossible for you to go there.

On the other hand, I am very glad that you can actually find something to really enjoy and that's indeed very cool.

EDIT: Summarised the whole thing since it was originally way too long, and go off the point.

Indeed there was certainly more frequent casualties back in those days either due to poorer hygiene, large scale wars, immature safety policies and all. However remember people used to be able to do complex calculations and theories with only pens, paper or other simpler tools, you've seen Rome and Pyramids, maps & sailing, the Maxwell, Newton, Gauss etc. Our ancestors competed against megafaunas and survived the ice age. In old times they also studied various interests from diplomatic to strategy, to literature, to history, to martial arts, to medical and applied science just like we do today however their achievements were definitely far greater due to how fast inventions and discoveries progressed and how quick eras passed on one after another.

Nowadays in the era where we can literally wipe off a nation from the other side of the globe with a single button press, we can cure diseases and treat severe injuries that were otherwise a death sentence to old timers, we can go anywhere we please within a single day given if we can pay for the traffic, we can also go into space where it's over the Earth's horizon and boundary. But with that much power in hand, why does almost everyone nowadays for their life only accomplish roughly the same as those peasants back in the day who manned the farm land?

The problem I see is that society is now too needlessly sophisticated and complex, everything has a rule, everything is a boring mini game inside a boring game that you can not quit, pass or win in the way you wish, it's as linear as it goes. while technologies certainly has evolved beyond the imagination of every single person from the old eras, the tools that we can use to our advantage is now used to keep everyone under control, instead of being our swords it is now our leash. More opportunities or not, they are basically the same practically. There is no difference between having no exits or having them but build a wall or toll stop after them.

We are watched, fed and babysat inside a farm, growing up to be fed to the customers known as economy. The difference is, back in the day the farm was manually watched and was built by wood, while you get butchered quicker you have more space to walk around and you also could certainly make a run for it if you know how. Now the farm is made out of steel, you're fed and watched by high tech robots, and you have less space to walk around in your cage, while you certainly live longer you have nowhere to go, escape is impossible nor would you can or have the will to because you are weighed down by by your own mass after being fed too much steroids forcibly when growing up.

This is probably not the exact illustration of the idea but I think one should get the point.

I'm generalizing here but as a parent and a gamer, I just want to know that my kids are safe and happy. If that means pursuing a career in games and they are super passionate about it, and can make a living off of it, that's great.

What I'm keying into with your post is passion and kudos to you for channeling it into something positive. =)

Sometimes, it's about bridging the gap and having parents understand these new types of jobs that exist, that didn't for them. This information may be outdated, but I've read somewhere that even a single person will have 3 different types of jobs in their career. And when they are in their first type of job, that the third one hasn't even been invented yet. When they are in the last type of job, their first job is obsolete.

It's good to have options so I'd second the Plan B and Plan C. =)

Wasn't there a Reddit post / link to an article not so long ago stating that those "League scholarships" are just a bunch of poppycock? Teams being gold-platinum level or something? Do they really help you future-wise?

It kinda fits here though. OP's school, the "University of Pikeville", fits it to a T. A small private college, with decently high tuiton and a small student body. They're not doing it to help you. They're doing it as a recruiting tool to get students that otherwise wouldn't be interested. And unless you're getting a fully paid ride through college from the scholarship, its not going to work out.

You could be right, you could be wrong, but we don't know. I do agree with your other post tho, only going for E'Sports management is probably a bad idea, always good to have back ups xD

Did you really just say that the University is using League scholarships to simply bring more students to its campus? LMAO. For one, they offered 20 spots. Private schools in general aren't really looking to massively expand their campuses. And even if they were, using League as an attractor is hilariously funny. What does "it's not going to work out" mean? I get to play a game I love while getting paid for it (technically).

Only 2 colleges in NA offer League scholarships, and the requirements are mid-high diamond. Many many universities have league teams, which are bogus - Gold - Plat players. But would a university offer money to average players? no.

There's a big difference between you, who worked at it and is using the opportunities to your advantage, and 99.99% of everyone else that thinks the same but just plays the game. I hope the people who take your story as an example to follow figure out which percent they want to be a part of.

Hey man, good for you! Allow me to give you some advice, free of charge though. Take it as you will.

  1. Don't plan on making this a full career. E-sports come and go. It wasn't long ago that SC2 was the hot game to be in. The second LoL slips out of the spotlight, you'll have nothing else.

  2. Do NOT go into E-sports management. I've actually talked with my counselor about E-sports. The issue is that being an manager of a gaming team does not look well going into other jobs. People see it as a frivolous thing, as a job with minimal responsibilities. True or not, this is people's perceptions, and it will make a difference. My advice is to go into business management, then branch out from there.

  3. More on the personal level here, but just getting a scholarship to a university doesn't mean much. It depends on the scholarship itself, and more importantly, on the university in question. Getting even a partial scholarship to any well known school is infinetly better than getting a full ride through a small no-name private college. Employers aren't going to outright say it, but they're going to be much more inclined to hire a student from a top university than others.

I'll probably end up going into BM and if E-sports opportunities come up I'll take them. If I got the chance to be an E-sports manager, I would take it any day. And when you say "people" see it as a frivolous thing, you do realize that most older people don't really know about League, or about what being an e-sports manager entails? So how could "people" see it as a frivolous thing? Even most league players don't know what being an e-sports manager entails. And meant to say "play with a deadest" purpose.

Interesting interpretation of addiction. I know I depend on certain habits/hobbies but I still have fun doing them and it certainly doesn't make rage. So does that mean that this isn't addiction? I will gladly use this excuse from now on =)

I have never actually had a real recognized addiction, that's why I am surprised to hear that people do not take pleasure in what they are addicted to. Like smokers, for example. It's a well-known addiction, so what, they are suffering when they smoke?

The key difference is that an addiction is something that is exceedingly difficult to break, even if the addicted person wishes to do so. You doing something that you find fun a lot is not an addiction because there is no evidence that you couldn't wish should you stop to enjoy it - sometimes people get bored of what they find fun and just stop playing. Not an addiction.

It's an addiction when despite no longer getting pleasure from it, you are unable to stop. That is why stuff like the classic "I'll quit smoking tomorrow" joke exists - a lot of smokers are entirely aware of the negative impacts of what they do, and get little actual pleasure from their smoking, but continue it because their body cannot handle them stopping. You are not necessarily suffering when addicted, as a smoker may still enjoy their smoking, but when you get to the point where you don't actually like what you're addicted to anymore but can't quit regardless, that's suffering.

Most smokers are addicted to smoking and nicotene..it started out as fun, but now its just something they "have" to do or they dont feel right and can get annoying, most of the "fun" is gone after a couple years, but your hooked and its habit...habit is even hard to let of that physical addiction sometimes.

That brings us to my original point which was that I said I was surprised that there are some people who are addicted to League and therefore invest a lot of hours into playing it but they are still stuck in Bronze 5. General impression about Bronze 5 is that everyone is angry at their teammates who "hold them back", so it seemed kind of weird to me that someone would find pleasure in this. I'd rather be discouraged to play a game that I can't get good at than get addicted to it.

I can explain it, im kind of addicted and im bronze 4. I am addicted to video games in general and competition, league brings both of them together for me. So here is how it starts. This game looks cool lets check it out. lvl 1 wow this is fun...plays nonstop till lvl 30, because of run pages...im starting the game with less stats than i could be so i have to power level to buy those runes. Hit lvl 30 ok im ready for pvp! Starts playing pvp...still not in ranked yet...eventually wins a few games and feels ready to compete...regardles of skill or potential you are having fun and addiction is well set in...you dont find your self stuck in bronze 5 get angry and somehow become addicted afterward...riot made sure there was sufficient time for you to get hoooked before they drop the ranked hammer and introduce you to their infuriating ranked system.

I don't get super mad in my games, but I often see people who are generally very "ragey" about the losses and they seem like their blood pressure is going super high when they are dissatisfied with how game is going and they get super frustrated and yet they keep going back to the game. I really don't get it. For instance, I used to play Starcraft a lot, but it's really hard for me to handle losses and eventually it came down to the fact that I'm not having fun playing this game. I still love the game, I follow it a lot and I will buy the next expansion, but that ladder environment will just never get me addicted, because it's too frustrating to lose. Maybe there is something different about winning in League that makes people stay even if they can't handle losses?

During my experience of climbing, I've been stuck in several leagues and almost lost hope. For 6 months I was in Silver 5, 2-3 months in Plat 5. I'm fine with losing when I see everything that I've done wrong and right. If I can pinpoint what I did wrong, I can learn and that's all I care about. If I know I played a damn good game, I can be happy with that.

I'm working my booty off trying to GET to Bronze 5! I think it's harder to get to Bronze 5 than it is to get out of the Bronze League! Looks like I need to start raging more! Seems legit! GG Surrender at 20.

Not sure if this is troll or not, but I mean all I can really say is main a role, a couple champions within that role, and play to improve (not to climb). As you get more experience, you'll get better and better. Again, kinda hard to say exactly how you should climb, I'm not sure what role you main.

Jg/top, generally the roles that spend the least amount of time fighting alongside teammates.

I don't know a whole bunch about top, but some good champs to learn are Irelia and Hecarim. Both very good lane phases, scale decently well, and have a lot of roam and TP potential. A lot of what carrying is is roaming, except for possibly ADC. Many lower elo tops will not tp or don't even take tp because they don't want to miss farm. However 1 tp to bot lane can win a game. If you've pushed your lane out, go and roam mid. Jungle is all about the early pressure. You need to gank before the other jungler does, or counter gank. For example, most junglers will start their route at the bottom side of the map so they get a good leash from ADC. This means they'll generally look to go top first. You can take advantage of that by sitting in a top brush and wait for the counter gank. It's so hard to tell you everything in one comment though.

Nice story. I am currently in a similar situation...My parents made me quit League of Legends for like 4 months now. My friends have been telling me how good the game as become after I quit. For instance, the new Summoner's Rift map, new champions, and URF. I generally get good grades. Last year in my last year of middle school, I was gaming all night on League, getting to silver last season. I got all As even though I was wasted.. But when my parents found out they were just angry with me and restricted my computer access by putting passwords...I look up to this post as inspiration...that I will someday be back on the rift with my friends, laughing on skype when we outplay someone or make dumb mistakes. I don't know how I will be able to persuade my parents cause I get good grades but they think the game will destroy my life...I guess I will have to prove to them that I can live my own life while being successful at the same time.

I can sympathize with you mate. Once I got League and internet back, it was very restricted use. I ended up graduating a year and a half early, and then got a job. At that point , my parents said I was on my own and could play as much as I want. You just have to stick in there man, it sucks. It reaaally sucks not to play. I love lol too. But I don't want to play this game for the rest of my life, for one it would get boring way faster than you would think. i really really like this post....I'm 14 and I LOVE league, it's been my favorite game since I discovered it (season 3) I always think about making it a career for my future, but telling my parents about it would make me look like a fool. Honestly I don't care what people say about me, but my parents obviously want to see me successful in life and they don't think I would be successful playing video games. it's pretty annoying to see how people only see careers as sitting behind a desk wearing a suit reading papers all day doing work. Everyone says find something you like to do and do it, so i will, I like to play video games so I think doing this as a career in my future suits me well..
