Harsh Remake System

To give a little backstory, I loaded into a game as support, and my ADC never connected. Like most players, I figured he might come back, so I went to get in position to leash for my jungler. We got invaded by a very strong level 1 comp, mostly revolving around the fact that I got caged by a veigar as a soraka.

Now, a few seasons ago, I remember hearing talk of people exploiting the first blood rule when it game to the remake system. If your team was first blooded before the 3 minute mark, you could not remake. People would see that someone never connected, group as 5, and all in to kill just one person before 3 minutes, even if it meant all 5 dying, just so they could play out a 5v4. I thought that rule was removed because it was being abused in that manner, but, after speaking with someone at Riot support through live chat, they linked me the FAQs which had that rule still in effect, though they did recall it being talked about in that capacity.

Now, because I was under the impression that rule was no longer in place, I didn't make a desperate attempt to try and survive. I saved my summoner spells, hoping we'd either remake or I'd still have my spells for the lane phase. Then, 3 minutes came around and we couldn't remake.

What I would like to talk about next are some possible tweaks to the system. From what I understood talking to Riot support, once someone is disconnected, a timer starts. After 90 seconds and also at 3 minutes, the team may remake. However, if they reconnect, the timer resets. This is what plagued our match. My ADC reconnected at 2:52 for a total of 5 seconds before disconnecting again and staying disconnected. Anyone looking at the game would understand the game was unfair from the start, which the remake system is designed to negate. The following are some small changes that I think would be beneficial to the system without opening it up to exploitation.

  • Remove the timer reset and increase the amount of time someone is disconnected. If someone is disconnected for 2 minutes of the first 3 minutes of the game, the game should be able to be remade with a vote.
  • Compounding on the previous point, the number of votes for a remake could be changed if this is exploitable in some fashion. It seems that 2 votes is enough for a remake, so maybe upping to 3/4 if needed.
  • Remove the first blood rule. This is easily exploitable, as I previously mentioned.
  • Remove the human element from this altogether. Overwatch has a system that nullifies the match if someone disconnects early enough in the match, and that system seems rather healthy in the game. If someone is disconnected for a certain amount of time, as previously stated, simply nullify the game without the need for human intervention. The game is automatically unfair from the start and wouldn't properly reflect the MMR of the players, or make for an enjoyable atmosphere in which players feel trapped by the game's rules.

These are just some ideas I came up with after my discussion with Riot support. If anyone had experiences where they felt the game should have been justifiably remade, but the rules of the remake system prevented that, I'd like to hear about them. The more people that see this as an issue, the more likely it is to be looked at. Also, any other suggestions people have to this would also be of benefit. Even if the idea isn't a perfect one, it might get the gears turning and get players and devs thinking outside the box on these issues.

There is a much more simple solution:

If at least one player is not ready (in loading screen) within 3 min the game counts as remake.
