Playing against a Veigar

So you've sat down for a game of soloQ, and graciously accept your favorite position: mid lane. You're around third pick or so, and the enemy is picking fairly meta choices. Maybe their first 3 picks are something like Jarvan, Caitlyn, and Nami. You're thinking "Hey, probably a good game to play some of my favorite AP casters, Ziggs/Ahri/Syndra/Lux! Veigar isn't seeing much play these days, so I'm probably safe." And that's when it happens. The enemy team picks Veigar.

Now obviously the best way to beat a Veigar is in champ select, but sometimes you just get hit with a Veigar countering you. In this situation, what's the best way to survive the lane and not get him fed to the point where he can start one-shotting squishies? I've heard from a lot of people that the best way is to apply jungler pressure, but some times the jungler just wants to continue ganking top or farming their life away. What are things that the individual PLAYER can do without relying on another person? What's the best build path? What are the best summoners to take?

Thanks in advance, I really need this knowledge, MARPAT

None of the champions you've listed should have much of a problem during laning phase against Veigar. He's very easy to bully. Autoattack/harass him when he goes near the farm, especially levels 1-5. Avoid pushing the lane because any jungler can gank with Veigar's E. Banshee's Veil largely negates him as a champion.

All of the above. Early game you can counter him with Magic Boots. These pretty much ensure you won't get nailed if he lands E on you. Late game you combine boots with Banshees and he becomes useless aside from his one shot ult, which better kill you, cause he has nothing after it.

First off, be careful early on. Good veigars will use their mana to harass you out of lane with q, not wasting it on farming much before they get a tear. This harass cannot be dodged, so focus on staying out of range when you try to farm. Otherwise, punish him for being close enough to q you, as the range is short and he should have a hard time dodging your skillshots at that range.

I wouldn't necessarily say ahri is a good pick if you're concerned about getting one-shot, because your CC is easier to dodge than his. If the veigar is capable of dodging your orb, it basically becomes "whoever lands the stun/charm wins". However, you're a safer laner as Ahri due to your passive healing, so the q poke should't bother you as much if you focus on farming. Lux and ziggs both outrange veigar with their poke, and can bring him down from relative safety. Although trying to pop lux passive is not advised under most circumstances :P.

As far as itemization, it's all about the stun. Merc treads + Banshee's Veil will destroy his ability to stun you. However, keep in mind that veigar's q is on low CD when maxed, and can easily be used to pop your shield if given half the chance. This low CD also means that he'll likely have a finisher if you're still around after he bursts you, so you'd better get the hell out if you survive his burst.

If Veigar uses q to pop your shield, you must consider the following: If he is in q range, he is in stun range and you are in the danger zone. However, if he stuns you immediately after he pops your shield with q, that will be a big chunk of his burst gone from his combo, so you should try to punish him for going in range while his q is on cooldown. If you have merc treads, you can probably avoid the w if he stuns you. However, if you DON'T have merc treads, exercise extreme caution when his ult is up. If you're far enough into the game, he may not need that q to kill you...

One last thing: if the jungle ganks, don't expect any kills if Veigar's stun is up. He may be immobile, but that huge stun can make him deceptively hard to gank.

Okay, as a Veigar main myself, I will say that Veigar gets crazy powerful if you let him. There are a few important things to remember when keeping him down.

  1. Don't let him use his Q to finish minions. This is his bread and butter early game, and the more he does it through the game, the more AP he stacks up. For those who may not know Veigar, his Q gives him +1 AP every time he kills a minion, +2 if it's a big minion or monster, and it scales even higher against champions later in the game. What does this mean? A smart Veigar probably won't bother trying to kill you for the first few levels. I don't. I just hang out and kill minions and avoid doing anything too risky. If you can keep constant pressure on him and keep him from using his Q on minions, it will set him back. Once he gets to level 4-5, he is going to have enough Q power that you won't want to bother to do this any more. Why? Because he can take most of the minion's health away with a single shot, making it harder to keep him from feeding with his Q. If you can force him to go after you to stop your pressure, every time he uses Q to damage you, he isn't using Q to gain AP (Unless you are letting him kill you with it).

  2. Time his stun. I usually skip the stun until lvl 4, but most veigars will pick it up by 3. The stun is very powerful, and if he plays it right, you won't dodge it. Two things to keep in mind about the stun. First, E has a long cooldown. 20 seconds to start, and most Veigars will level it last. That means if you manage to dodge it, take full advantage of his squishiness while he can't stop you. Second, if he drops E around you, then don't panic and run into it.Stop and stay put. Better to take a few hits from minions or even a W to the face than to run into the wall and guarantee your death. So many people panic when they see the stun, don't be one of them.

  3. Don't charge him. Veigar is squishy and tempting. If you have a veigar that is going nose to nose with you with 15% of his health, chances are his ult is up and he is going to nuke you. He wants you to rush him. He will stun, deathfire grasp, and then nuke, and you'll be dead immediately. Wait for help.

  4. Focus him in team fights. If you can get to him, kill him first. Forget anyone else on their team. He will at least trade for his life with a nuke, but if you can get him first, then he won't get anyone else, because that Q gets really nasty late game, and it is hard for most characters to stop it. Time his E, and charge after he has dropped it and missed you.

  5. Finally, never think he's out of tricks. Q late game will have a 3 second cooldown if he has built right, so know that every 3 seconds, he can hit you really hard. If he is kiting you don't take the bait. I have sometimes taken 4 heroes chasing me because they didn't know when to quit.

I know that there are other things people are saying on here, I don't disrespect anything that they say. But if you go against me, that's how you will need to play to beat me.
