Effect of support item changes on support mages

I recently noticed that the initial support item rework removing final gold generation and the recent changes to the stats given by the support items seem to discourage playing pure damage carries as support (provided they weren't designed as such beforehand).

If I remember correctly, there was a rise in mage supports due to the damage they could output, which may have been aided by the constant gold generation from the old support items and the stats from the initial set of reworked support items.

I haven't actually done the math on this to determine if the gold/stats given to support mages actually delays their item powerspikes meaningfully or not, so I'm curious to hear other's thoughts on the matter.

Good.

I'd rather have Enchanters and any tank that isn't Leona or Nautilus being the best in bot lane over Brand and Zyra.

I honestly see more mage supports now, The problem is that bot lane is supposed to be two champions, one to disengage or migitate the effects of the fights, and one to put out damage. The problem right now is that with the mana regen paired with mages with really good base mana regen, can effectively outspam healers whos job it is to heal after a fight. not everytime your adc gets hit by a random Lux/Xerath Q.

If anything they should have just bumped the base mana regen from enchanter mages and leave the Spellthiefs the same.
