What do we do about Brand?

Here's a champ nobody talks about (if I'm wrong, please link me to a recent discussion). I absolutely love his kit, but he is often seen as the definition of an immobile mid lane mage. The discussion as a whole hasn't been touched on, and I'd love to see Swain, Malzahar, Vel'koz, and whoever else I'm forgetting to get some love, but Brand is my focus for right now, and he needs some help, or at the very least some attention. Now, I'm a noob. I don't know every element that goes into balancing, or exactly how to fix these mages. But with Brand's kit, I have a few ideas.

  1. I like Luden's Echo, but I feel like sacrificing AP for a movespeed boost might help. My idea: a movespeed boost at 100 stacks that goes away when the stacks are expended. Some nerfs for Cass and Kennen might be in order, but this seems to be a really good solution for all immobile mid lane mages. Maybe the bonus damage could be given a boost, too.

  2. Brand's E stands out in his kit, as it's basically useless other than an easy way to activate his passive. It's range is too low to be useful, so here's my solution: BORK Active. Activate his passive and steal movespeed. I legit want to hear criticisms for this idea, because I'm not 100% sure how much it would help his mobility. It would also help his support game, as adding a slow to his kit would help his cc

  3. A ward, item active, or something that you can place in the lane. Staying within an AOE of the item for a long enough time will give the champion a speed boost that decays as you leave it. This would really help champions that stay in lane a while, and also help their roaming a bit.

I'd love to hear what you guys think.

I honestly believe if his ult was more reliable, he would be picked occasionally in the LCS. Hes strong as a mid and as a support. He has high damage by going rumble-like penetration builds. Strong AOE and wave clear.

His entire problem is his ult is just hit or miss. Hes actually pretty good in solo Q.

the problem with brand is that every little buff would make him op

Being immobile isn't his core problem, as we've seen Xerath, Cassiopeia, Syndra, and more recently Viktor succeed in competitive play with little to no mobility. His problem is the lack of reliability. All of his abilities are incredibly underwhelming when his targets aren't ablazed, and how are you gonna set your target's ablaze against a coordinated team? Use your Q and lose your only form of cc? Use your W and lose significant amounts of damage? His E is the only ability that is worth giving up the ablaze enhancement for, but it requires you to stand within 625 range of your target as a squishy, immobile mage.

Syndra and Viktor can already do what Brand does without these types of limitations. Their stun is AoE, and can be casted anywhere, on anyone, requiring little to no setup. Their damage is a little lower than Brand, but they don't need to ablaze their targets, so again, they can do their thing whenever they want. Brand is never going to have a place in the meta when so many other mages do their job better than him.

However, they can't just increase the range on his E either, without making him overpowered in low elo. His W deals incredible damage to ablazed targets and is very hard to dodge due to it's large radius. A Brand who can just EW combo you from a safe range will almost always win lane, and soon people will start whining for nerfs, which is not what anyone wants.

As a main Brand player (almost 1000 ranked games with him Season3 and 121 games this season ! ) I would stronglyyyy agree with you. He definitely needs some kind of help in terms of helping him overcome his immobility and lack of dmg for his E and R ! ....

I definitely think you're right when you say his E needs to be boosted. I think increasing the range on it and decreasing the mana cost on it would definitely help him with immobility in the sense that you can E and Q for a stun (which can give you precious seconds to run !) .... I usually have problems with stunning when i am being chased and my W is on CD. If i turn to use my E to stun my opponent, he can easily get spells off or even that critical auto attack !

As far as his ulti , I feel its really strong early game , but late game unless you are ahead and have loads of dmg items, it's pretty much useless. This is why if you dont win your lane as brand, it's pretty hard to come back from it late game.

Love this thread tho! I always wondered why nothing is being done with brand :(
