Trying to Honor Opponents Who Deserve It the New System *Serious*

Crazyeye777··139 votes·3,327 views

I was going to honor an opponent after a match in which they were having a lot of fun making kindhearted jokes about my Brolaf skin (Mostly consisting of the words BRO and DUDE being sent back and forth between the 2 teams over chat) but the new honor system disabled honoring opponents entirely.

I understand having the normal system disabled but I would like to honor opponents outside of the new system if possible. It might be good to not have opponents as options in the new system but not being able to honor kind opponents at all seems like a big mistake to me.

They made that game much more enjoyable then a lot of games I had today.

It is so rare sometimes to find positive opponents when it happens they deserve recognition.

If a Rioter could find time to comment that would be preferred just so I know they received this message.

It's also a bit disheartening that you have to honor people before the post-game lobby. I often decided to honor (or report, but that I still can) people after we had the opportunity to chat a bit in that lobby, while we don't really have the time to do that while the match is still on-going.

Crazyeye77711 votes

I agree I've had games where for the entirety of the actual game I was planning on honoring one of the players in the game until the post game chat happens and it turns out they were bottling up rage and just start spewing profanities out at the opponents seemingly out of nowhere.

That and I often forget peoples scores when it comes to assists so I'm never quite sure how well the support players doing until the post game lobby.

DeathBurst12 votes

Regarding that last point, you shouldn't honor people based on score anyway. A good score can be the sign of a good player, but this has nothing to do with how honourable they are.

Wimbledofy3 votes

that's why he didn't say kills, he said assists. it's very easy to forget a supports existence even if they did all the work. The amount of assists they have can be a good indicator on how well they did.

DeathBurst5 votes

That's besides the point. I did not say "kills" either, I said "score".

But you should not honor player based on how well they did. Everyone wants to win, everyone tries to win. Doing well is not being honourable, it's just playing the game...

Being honourable is going out of your way, giving tips and advice, or acting as a leader and coordinator, or simply keeping morale up, but it's doing more than just your individual job in the team.

SanKakU3 votes

That's not entirely true. There are 2 definitions of honor, actually, at least at first glance in an online dictionary.

  1. regard with great respect.
  2. fulfill (an obligation) or keep (an agreement).

Doing your individual job on a random team would be number 2 on that list. I'd actually put "keep an agreement" as a definition number 3 rather than putting them both under the same definition. Of course, the grammatical difference is non-existent, so I assume the additional definition(s) in this dictionary don't register if there isn't a difference in grammar usage.

DeathBurst2 votes

Dictionary definitions are fine and dandy, but context is more important. I'd argue that in this context, the goal of the feature wasn't to simply reward fulfilling an obligation, but to highlight outstanding players. You were not supposed to hand out honor to every player that simply played correctly. And at least personally, that's definitely not what I did, nor what the other players I know did.

They plan on making honoring opponent possible in the future, but they want to focus on honor for allies first.

Yeah, the delayed rollout is a little bit frustrating, but I'd rather have this now than wait around with old honor until absolutely everything is done.

Don't know why this got downvoted, what do the regular reworks, the client that needed to be alongside the old one, pre-seasons, ect mean? They use live servers the same way other games use beta tests. Not that its always a bad thing but I'd rather have something like the honor system closer to completion though I guess they need to make sure their ranking format is fair across lots of players. Not sure why that can't include 1 opponent honor too though.

Cavesloth3 votes

I was referring more the fact that client (which they rolled out what 6 months ago?) STILL has the resizing bug since launch (client resizing itself back to 1024 from 1278 after a game), and still takes forever to get to the postgame lobby if you use close client during game (which I HAVE to because of another bug which disappears all the client except a tiny rectangle after the game if don't use that option, that ones been there for 2 months), and the one where your champion screen doesn't show the correct highest grade you've received, also there since launch.

And then I have these games where all 4 of my teammates just trashtalked all game, and I'm forced to honor one of them. Sucks man.

Here I thought I was required to honor x.x

You can just say something nice to them in chat, that would probably mean more to them than the pointless +1's that people were never 100% sure if they were being sent honestly or ironically.

Riot has also said they're looking into ways to expand the honor system to honor opponents too, but they wanted to ship the simpler version first to get feedback before expanding on it.

Crazyeye7772 votes

I usually try and say something in postgame chat but most people leave very quickly in order to get to their next game.

I also know I'm in a minority when I say that I don't tend to use sarcasm and irony at all but I like to think that most people have the understanding that you should honor people who made the the game better and more interesting, but thinking about it, with the nature of leagues community, I do recognize that I may just be filling myself with false optimism.

OneTrickZilian3 votes

Same here. Big disappointment I can't honor good opponents. Personally for me, getting honor from opponents was the biggest most valuable acknowledgement.

MonkeyMadness3 votes

Nah, this is a bad idea, as we only get 1 vote now. Also, consider that you might think an enemy did a great job, or was a very good sport, etc. but behind the scenes (ie in the enemy team's chat) the guy could've been a huge douche nozzle and you would never know. I think the system is pretty much perfect the way it is, don't change a thing Rito.

You don't make sense. You cannot read people's mind regardless if they are behind a computer screen or face-to-face. If they were Honorable and you thought so, then there should be an option to honor them. If more than 1 vote is not convenient for riot (for some reason) then we should still be able to honor opponents if lets say, all of your team mates were douches and 1 enemy was honorable.

You are literally supporting handing out awards for existing. Please stop. Let honor be an exclusive thing for people who actually earn it. If you "think" someone is honorable, you are missing the point. Being honorable isn't someone's opinion, it is a factual description of someone's behavior.

You're actually supporting my claim with what you just said. "Being honorable isn't someone's opinion, it is a factual description of someone's behavior" Therefore if the enemy was honorable in his behavior then you should have an option to honor him.

As per your claim that we do not know how the enemy was like in his own team chat then i ask, can you say the same thing about a person who is all good in a team chat but behind a screen is screaming and swearing? Nope, you cant. You can never read their minds nor their intention hence why you judge the honorable with the behavior they present i.e. the facts they present in front of you. Its not an opinion because they have passed the honorable opponent checklist and hence opinion doesn't matter.

MonkeyMadness1 votes

If they were Honorable and you thought so, then there should be an option to honor them.

If your criteria for honoring someone is "well I think he was honorable" then you shouldn't be honoring that person. Only if you KNOW that person is honorable (ie you have had enough interactions with this person to make such a claim beyond reasonable doubt) should you honor them. As I said before, you might think that an opponent is acting honorably, when in fact they are being a total shitlord to their teammates in teamchat where you can't see it. Accept the system for how it is, it's most decidedly better this way.

It works both ways. I want to be able to honor and be honored by the enemy. The feeling of being honored by the opponent feels much greater than being honored by an ally. I don't think the current system of honoring an ally is bad but what i do believe is that in future they should add an option to honor the enemy if need be. Like i said, your own team mate can be all nice in team chat but be a jackass behind the screen. The same goes for the enemy. If they presented themselves as honorable in the /all chat then you should not have to think about their behavior with their allies. The honor system for allies will decide on that matter and there always exists the reporting system if the person was a right jackass. A person who has received a tremendous amount of honors from enemies will most likely be a very good sportsman while vice versa would mean he is less likely to be toxic. Both honor systems are needed in my opinion.

Then you are missing the point of honor. You are actually conflating honor with just good sportsmanship (not to belittle sportsmanship, but these two things are not the same). Honor is meant to reward people who go above and beyond regular levels of sportsmanship, and it is not possible to get an accurate picture of an enemy player doing this, as you cannot see his/her chat. Just go with the current system as is, I think it will be much better in the long run, as it makes honor feel like an actual award and not just a button you click on everyone at the end of the game.

Maybe we can make life easier for both of us. I like the current system of honoring allies without a doubt but i also think that a system to honor good sportmanship (honoring enemies) should exist in the near future. Both traits are worthy of being rewarded hence why the old system allowed you to honor both allies and enemies.

Sadly, there are times where the cause of toxic behavior spurs from the enemy. The real purpose of the honoring system is to reduce toxic behavior in game by rewarding people for good behavior ( a typical way to discipline ). However, the old honoring system did not achieve this and i think riot has taken a step in the right direction. Therefore i sincerely believe and think that good behavior from enemies can have an huge impact on how much you enjoy the game and therefore impact your behavior in the game.

MonkeyMadness1 votes

Ok, so if you are actually suggesting that enemy players cause significant toxicity, you have failed miserably in your use of the mute function. We can have an honest debate about the pros and cons of muting teammates, but if you aren't muting enemies at the slightest provocation, you are frankly just being dumb.

I understand your meaning, but I still feel that you are referring to sportsmanship here, and not honor. Honor is supposed to be more than just positive behavior. It's supposed behavior that went above and beyond what is expected. Behavior that singlehandedly won you the game kind of thing. You just don't have enough interaction with enemy players to make that kind of judgement on them.

Crazyeye7771 votes

I agree... sort of... I don't think we should incorporate the opponents team into the new system but rather have something similar to the old system being used instead. It would incur no actual benefits but just informs you that someone on the other team enjoyed playing with you.

I agree with your reasoning as to why they got rid of it (Also they likely got rid of it do to those who would honor opponents who feed on purpose) and think that the new system with its rewards should remain your own team only.

MonkeyMadness1 votes

I feel like this will just dilute the meaning of honor though. I say leave it and see how it goes. I think this will be better for the long term.

SanKakU3 votes

I actually got a lot of honorable opponent recognition instances. I would like to see honoring opponents return. Unfortunately, what could happen with that is players that are intentionally feeding might get their honor boosted(by trolls pleased with their win) and start getting rewards again.

So even though I would like to see it return, it's probably something they need to be very careful about adding. Maybe they could set up honorable opponents to get completely different rewards from the honorable teammates. Not sure what those rewards would be, but that would probably do a lot to help fight against the trolling honors. There may not be a good reason to add it back given that there might not be anything they can think of that they wouldn't mind accidentally giving to feeders.

i cant move wtf3 votes

Just friend the person after the game and honor them when you queue with them on your team. Solved.

big boi edri3 votes

I've had a couple games where we were rofl stomped by someone who got fed, but they didn't spam mastery emotes or use all chat for condescending remarks. I'd honor those people if I could. They played well, and were graceful about it. Would be nice to have this feature for those occasions.

Karn Bishop2 votes

I almost never honor opponents anyways, with a few rare exceptions because in ranked your enemy only tends to use /all as a tool for victory, so when they comment wow you totally had that if only your nami were actually playing the game their goal is not to get you to work better but to pin you against each other in a word war.

its a fake niceness purposely designed and worded in such a way to slowly pit your teammates against each other because if your typing hate or complaints at your allys your not controlling your champ for that extra 100 gold in that wave you would have otherwise gotten.

wilmer0072 votes

Honor 1.0 = honorable opponent was basically "i will honor the top lane soraka for feeding my akali 8 times in the first 10 minutes of the game. instead of "i will honor the 20-1 opponent who carried his team to victory".

this is why it's not an option in Honor 2.0 and i hope it never comes back.

My favourite thing about the honour system is that little button underneath the 4 teammates that looks like this (>) that lets you skip it.... i click it every time

kaduer1 votes

at this point might as well skip honor scene: the only one that gets any is the carry no luv for supps yet again . cant honor more then one and the lack of honorable opponent option

yea whoever carries the game the most get the honor.... they need to make it like overwatch so you can only vote for the 4 players that did the best

Lol, if you think honouring your opponents who talk shit when they win, name calling, "gg ez" etc... deserve it, you're extremely naive and blind.

I was going to make a post like this too. I had a really good, rare game where everyone on both teams deserved an honor and I could not honor the enemy team at all. It was a little upsetting.

To be fair, the three categories offered for honoring are basically geared toward children. GG <3? Come on, kindergarten.

This was basically what happened in a game I played yesterday. It was kindve different since I didnt really need to honor an enemy, but it seems like every game that Brolaf is in the game everyone on both teams spams his quotes. Having that skin in the game makes the match hes in so much more enjoyable.

The send gift after match functionality seemed to be disabled for me, along with the old Honor button. I don't know if this is intentional or not.

I suppose that was done to prevent some abusing of the system like they talk about in honor explained video - so people don't go "you honor me as best opponent, i honor you" or pick the guy who inted for the other team and honor him for giving them free win. I've seen both done with the old system. But I also sympathize with you because I've had some really fun opponents for different reasons. Even if they didn't have a great match, I can usually tell if they were inting (in which case I report) or just having a tough matchup but playing it out as best as possible despite getting no help from their team when they should have gotten it (in which case I stuck up for them when their team tried to blame them for everything).

If that's really Riot's take on the situation, then it really says a lot with regard to how they feel about their own playerbase/community.

"Yeah, we know our community is mostly toxic or just trying to game the system so we're going to take out any means to honor legitimately decent people because there are just too many assholes".

That's just sad.

Yes, I agree, honoring an opponent should be possible! I've had multiple times that I would've liked to honor an opponent, and I've heard the same from some opponents that they would've liked to honor me, or another team mate.

I think with the motivation to improve player behavior by Riot, this is a gross oversight!
