Crit as a Non-Random Stat

I saw a couple crit topics recently and how the randomness unless you have mad Yasuo levels of crit can be frustrating. I had a silly thought of how to keep it but reduce it's randomness. Lets say instead of having a % of chance to crit that the stat on items gave a guaranteed crit buff to a champion with a CD. Say someone has what would equate to 25% crit chance now would be (of course #'s are just an example) 2 seconds of guaranteed crits activated and proc'd on the first auto attack with a 4 second "no crit" CD window afterwards till it can proc again. [50% 3sec/3sec, 75% 4sec/2sec, 100% constant buff active] Maybe scaling linearly from 0%-100% or only achieved at certain thresholds ie: every "25%".

I believe it would open counter play to crit champions. CC them during their "open" window and you are rewarded as opposed to getting 3 shot by them after landing a skillful combo because they got lucky with crits. I know if this was actually a liked idea that it may be hard to implement and especially tweak for proper balance but I'm interested in how this thought is received as a concept of removing one of the last bastions of randomness from the game and maybe even changing how we look at certain champions.

I'd rather see crit turned into a % damage modifier for the AD damage autoattacks do (meaning it won't apply to on-hits and such). Either that, or it could be changed so that if a champion has 25% crit (for an example), the champion does 200% AD damage on every fourth hit. Basically, crit could be changed to work like Caitlyn's passive.

This is like the worst idea on the boards. It just means FREE CRIT POKE, abusive as fuck. would ruin bot lane The game.

i dont really find any need to change the way crits work so meh

That's because you're not obsessed with "I would have won that if not for WAAAH RANDOMNESS".

This looks pretty interesting. Having instances of time where a champion is clearly super-strong, and others where they're clearly dealing less damage would be a great way of keeping the explosive power of crit without its current randomness (it would also scale really well with attack speed). With this in mind, I think it might be better to get rid of crit chance entirely, and instead have the stat boost the power of critical hits instead: you'd keep the same windows of power and vulnerability, but building crit would make those windows far better-defined by widening the damage gap between the two.

the main problem with this is anybody can buy one crit item and u have so much streanght when 4 members of ur team(minus the AP mid laner) crit for 3 seconds will automatically win the game. also imagine im playing adc in bot lane. first back i have 1000 gold or so. the adc who buys crit will automatically win the lane cause he will just have to force a fight when he gets his crit chance up and it will make early crit chance too OP

Well the numbers I gave were just examples and there may be a feasible balance somewhere. If this change were made items probable would have a new way to denote crit instead of a % and items would be rebalanced around it. Say a crit item worth 1000g would maybe only provide .75 sec of crit, enough for 2 crits without any real attack speed (the initial hit and however many in that window) on a longer CD. Maybe 3 sec of crit would be to max you could get and there would be no 100% crit uptime capability aside from maybe specific champs. Maybe crit damage is lowered to compensate for guaranteed windows. It's really a balance thing that would have to be tested to see if it is broken or not.

If he holds the crit, he won't be able to cs. it actually helps the other guy if hes good at disengage.

And yes, everyone would then go crit first fountain, just as everyone goes for BF/pickaxe on live.

There are probably issues with the details of the implementation, but I think the core idea is still fantastic. Going back to having crit boost crit damage, if 200% base critical damage is too much, crits could start at a lower base amount, which would prevent crit from being too crazy early on. If activating "crit time" on the first hit after a cooldown has its issues, perhaps it might be better to have it activate differently.

Personally, I think the solution would perhaps be to add crit as a mechanic available to all champions: attacking several times or for a certain amount of time would allow you to temporarily inflict critical damage for the next few seconds, or just inflict one crit, and opting into crit itemization would allow you to get more benefits out of that (you could also make crits scale with AP, which would allow even AP champions to make use of it).

Critical strike chance isn't bad right now. Many people say that its completely luck based, but it isn't. Critical strike is run on a pseudo-random system. This means the chance is lowered after you crit, and increases as you don't crit. (except 100% crit chance of course)
