Matchmaking System in League of Legends

So, I'm a relatively new player. Just started playing less than two months ago. I'm not even level 30 or anything. I'm just curious as to why I keep getting matched up against Golds, Platinums, and Diamonds. I have around 150 wins, and I'm being matched up with people who have thousands. One of my friends says the MM system is based on win %, which just boggles my mind. If that is true, that could be the WORST stat you could use for MM. League is a decent game, but by FAR, the MM in this game is the WORST I've seen in any game. It's a huge barrier to entry when new players are put up against Diamonds in Unranked Normal games, and it's not even a remotely close match. I'd say 60-70% of my games have me up against or with much more experienced players. Is there any way to get a proper matchup in this game, or is MM just really bad. ANY help would be appreciated because I like the game, but this is just too often and is really ridiculous. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: All in all, I like the game, but is there a mode/way to get a fair MM matchup? I just want fair matches.

I don't know if this will contribute to the discussion much at all, but I do know that if one queues up with a friend, their opponents will be a bit more experienced. This is because of the assumption that these duo-queued players have more communication, giving them a bit of leverage.

Duos are probably the biggest cause of this sort of thing. When I duo with my sub level 30 or lower elo friends, it tries to balance it out. So odds are there's a plat/diamond no your team as well, you just might not notice it and it won't happen all the time.
