New Player trying to earn heroes without spending money.
Is it hopeless? Should I just give up? I'm not spending 100's of dollars just for the chance to play ranked.

Dont play ranked just because you hit level 30. You will absolutely fuck yourself down the road. Dont ruin your MMR
3 things: They're called champions (I know it's just terminology but still) Ranked requires level 30 They provide loot at every level up that let you unlock them at a discount price or that you can sell to buy other champions with from the store
As well, they have a rotation of champions that are free to play weekly so you can try new champions out through that and save your blue essence for the ones that you like. You still have 16 levels to go, after all
Its a bit faster to get champions now then It has been but will take you a loooooooong time to unlock all. Not hopeless to build a pool and the IP sink runes and rune pages got removed. I personally recommend using free week champions, check them out in Practice Tool and if you enjoy them give them a few Normals or VS bots. Make a Notepad/word and record what champs ya like in various roles and save up. Its gonna take you months, your probably going to want at least 2 champions for each role.
