What's a new player to do?

As context, I've started to play the game properly (that is, not playing one game of co-op, saying "I have no idea what's going on and nobody's helping" and left) for a week or two now, and I feel that I have to get this off my chest and see if there is something I'm missing.

After playing for the short time that I have with a group, I have immediately discovered how unfair this game is to a new player. The group consisted of four of us; myself, a friend who was a few levels higher, and IIRC two around the 20-30 mark. We were paired with, on our team, an Ekko who was around my level also, if not lower.

The enemy team consisted of three level 30s and two level 24s. I ended up against a Renekton who I physically couldn't harm at the start of the game playing as Vladimir. At the beginning of the game, I was pushed immediately into tower and couldn't even touch a melee opponent because whenever I came into my range, he would burst forward and cut a third of my health off, while I did a measly tenth, and then just walk back to his minions and carry on. Later in the same game, I couldn't farm whatsoever because as soon as I went into range of a minion, he would dive me, stun me and subsequently hit me for my entire health within a second, before level 6. Alongside this, the Ekko on our team and the other player my level were also completely battered by an opposition who was higher level than us. Subsequently, at the end of the match, the first thing the Renekton says is "such an easy game", after my retort stating how this is such a nice game to new players, he said became somewhat apologetic and said "You just have to stay in tower". What I've been told by my team is that because I am not level 30, I cannot push, I cannot poke, and the only thing I am actually permitted to do is sit in my tower and try not to die so that the guy I'm against doesn't get fed. All this time I have to watch the other player continue to outlevel and outfund me until ultimately he just decides that he's bigger than me and jumps me in tower. Afterwards we even discovered that one of the players we were against was actually a Platinum player.

After that game, I took a minute to look at what getting to level 30 actually means, and what I saw was absolutely terrifying: A level 30 gets to run around with what can quite simply be stated as nearly two starter items for free at the start of the game. Before the game has even begun, I am being outmatched by my opponent because, and this is as point-blank as it can be, his numbers are bigger than mine, always.

Now what I really want to know is how in God's good earth I am actually supposed to enjoy this game and do anything. At the moment, I have never been in a single position where I've considered myself on equal grounds to my opponent in lane. Is there something I'm missing? Is there a different mode in which runes and masteries are not present? Am I doing something wrong? Honestly, this game just seems so unfriendly to new players, both in community, balancing and the actual gameplay itself.

What am I missing?

TL;DR: Because I'm level 10, I'm losing because I'm getting pitted against people with bigger numbers than me. help?

Id plat co op for a while level a bit the go to solo que 5v5 and hope you get paired with lower levels. if you multiman que i think it is more likely you face higher levels.

Play bots and 3s till 20 where you can buy teir 3 runes. Also if you party with higher ranks you will be placed with them.

There's nothing wrong with playing solely against bot opponents to learn the game (it's their purpose for the most part). The matchmaking system tries to put you with similar level opponents but when it can't find any it slowly expands the search and eventually includes people like that; the alternative is a really long queue.

I suggest watching the championship series going on to see what they're doing, and high elo streamers on twitch.tv. You can learn a hell of a lot simply by watching.

No, there's no mode that doesn't include your Masteries/Runes. It is unfair, but there's no choice atm. You can read guides on Mobafire if you want to get specific knowledge on what to do with a particular champion.

The thing about playing only against bots is they behave differently than people. Not better, all the time, but...differently. Bots will not dive you, so playing against bots won't help you deal with that. Also, getting dived as Vlad, if your W doesn't help that, I'm not really sure what to tell ya. If you waited for tower to target him, then W, he should take a few tower shots and back off...but then again, he was ahead, so I can't say.

Its mostly riot's bad matchmaking and smurfing problem that doesnt put legit new players vs legit other new players. Instead it becomes a mix of new players, smurfs and paired 30s with 1 low level person to mess up match making.

Just play until you start to get the hang of it. I had no idea how to really play the game until I was around level 20-30.

Say for the sake of argument you were a gold level player but still playing on that lvl 10 account. At the start, that Renekton you were facing and yourself, would still be doing the same amount of dmg (as you experienced) to each other in quick trades. What is really effecting that matchup is not so much skill but the runes/masteries system. He had tier 3 magic resistance runes while you basically had nothing. Vlad vs Renekton isnt a favorable matchup for you, but not impossible. Dont play with any of your friends that are over level 20 until you start reaching that point or you should expect that to happen.

I highly recommend trying to make a few League friends. Get to know them, maybe skype or voice chat a bit, and learn with them (or have them teach you). It really smooths out the learning experience if you have people learning with you or teaching you while you get better.

You can do this just by friend requesting people that you get along well with in games, but it's something you have to push for. If you're looking for a close friend group to play league it won't just fall in your lap, you have to work for it. If you just friend request someone and talk to them once a week, that's not going to really do much. You have to pretty actively go out of your way to talk to them, eventually ask if they have skype or something, make a group chat with everyone, etc.
