Sona's ult

MsBossington··158 votes·6,803 views

I feel like a good quality of life change for sona's kit would be to have her ult start behind her player model so that way you can land it on champs like xin xao, rengo, and other assassins for a chance of counter play against these champions. Instead of don't get close or hope your slow auto passive effect isn't the same range as their gap closer. It would make the ult easier to land against heavy engage champs that land on top of her and give her chance to outplay these moments instead of feeling like the most hopeless squishy around or wasting ult in it's current state.

You know how it is with Sona

If Riot gives her one buff (however small) they follow up with 3 nerfs next patch

buff her ult, W is a skill shot you can miss and E only speeds you up XD #riotgames

Where is this W skill shot you speak of?

That might as well be the case RIGHT NOW.

How the hell does one "miss" with a heal?

except it's not a joke (or funny)... Also i could actually see Riot doing that for champion.

actually they have done. Old karma aoe damage + heal cone/skillshot op

If Lux has a skillshot shield then why not?

SoryInAdvance1 votes

that isnt the same thing. lux is still a mage. sona rely's on the consistency of her main abilities to be useful..

Sona, the support that can poke two targets with an AOE spell that scales 50% AP on each bolt or 78% on a powerchord....yeah that's pretty bs

I see you saying this, but i have to ask. Given how she is currently built, what else do you expect her to do? God knows her utility is trash tier until you are rolling 200+ AP. Even at max ranks and full CDR, neither her heal/shield or her movement speed is really anything to write home about.

Let's say Riot changes her, so that she is no longer "the damage utility support", What is your suggestion for buffs in other areas to compensate for a downgrade in damage output? If they change her Q to a skillshot, are you ok with it starting off doing like 90 damage and ending with it doing something like 300-500 before AP scaling? Would the skill shot hit minions? If so how much bonus power do you need to give it so that landing it actually makes it feel worth while?

It honestly seems like the people who claim that she is too strong have either never played her (or only done so a handful of times since she existed) and/or flip out at the idea of giving her HUGE buffs to compensate for a reduction in "ease of play". Let's be honest here if Sona didn't auto target she would need to be a BEAST when she hit her offensive ability. Or if you don't want her doing damage, she is likely to become this monster who can't be pushed out of lane, along with her ally, unless she is playing like a blind cat chasing a laser pointer. The other possibility is you get a champion who, if kept alive by her team, basically makes a 5 man push impossible to counter and has it just steam roll down lanes wiping out everything in it's path.

I see allies dodging only Sona's heal but not anything else.

Nah brah, they follow up with 3 nerfs in the same patch.

Sona has never had a single patch in this game's history that was only a buff.

Whoa, what's with the comments about her being gutted? I have a 67% win rate on her, she's terrifying! Early game poke is insane, sustain for your ADC is amazing, landing your ult is a death sentence, and her E lets you use your red trinket across an entire section of the jungle! I love everything about her kit.

What do you think about the change I suggested for her ult?

Supreme Senpai693 votes

Oh. I upvoted it. Seems like a very small change that wouldn't make or break anything, just make her life easier.

I won 5 ranked games in a row with Sona a few days ago, I don't know why everyone calls her weak.

QjTHqo3RTq6 votes

tl;dr lack of cc and mediocre abilities that put her at risk of getting caught and feeding and in a very bland support meta, she doesnt fit in with her tanky brethren

Let's talk, well utility, the thing the support class does, Sona doesn't do that. She does damage, which honestly can honestly end her in getting hooked and dieing for like, 80 damage on the enemy galio. Has an ok heal, which will fall apart after a couple autos. Her movespeed boost, its nice but it wont get you out of situations like thresh lantern. and then her ult, an aoe stun. Now she has no cc outside of her ult, which is a good ult, but quite frankly, if you want an ap mage that can provide damage with a stun, Annie, Velkoz, Zyra and a bunch of others do that. Lux has a shield that's quite stronger than sona heal, with cc and tons of damage, but she's not considered a very good support. Because everyone has a hard one for Janna Leona Lulu Thresh Blitzcrank

bill848 votes

It is not 80 damage on the enemy Galio, It is +60 heal for the enemy Galio.

Just Shimakaze1 votes

Lulu is a better solo laner than a support though....

ok.

But she's a better support than sona

I won 5 ranked games in a row with Sona a few days ago, I don't know why everyone calls her weak.

She lacks the power many other champions have of being the one who "wins" the game. Her poke isn't strong enough to scare most champions unless you can land it repeatedly without counter damage. Her heal/shield are very weak when you look at what they do individually (100% AP ratio sounds great until you have to tag all 5 champions on your team for it), her movement speed spell doesn't really last long enough (you can hit that thing like 4-7 times going from one base to the other and you still probably only saved yourself like 2-4 seconds); she lacks any internal form of engage disengage I.E. gap closer. And her ult can't hit champions that are on top of her (XinZhao , Rengar , etc...).

But most of all she is SUPER AP hungry. While other utility champions like Soraka, or Janna can be played with limited AP and still have their abilities function as needed, high base heals with low cooldowns and strong disengage mechanics respectively, Sona doesn't really do all that much if you build her aura/defensive heavy and AP light.

She isn't "weak" per say, but a lot of her power comes from when your team is a full group and from your opponents playing poorly. One of these means that you often don't see a power spike until 15-20 mins into the game. The other is outside of your control.

That's weird because champion.gg found over 7000 in their sample.

QjTHqo3RTq4 votes

I was talking more about my games played, but I would also like to point out that site claims sona counters thresh, while weak to leona and blitzcrank.

Now how in the hell.

Simato5 votes

That is correct though

Jayrett1 votes

sona can poke and out sustain his poke, while leo and blitz are all or nothing supports, not poke like thresh.

QjTHqo3RTq3 votes

I'm not sure what kind Thresh "pokes." His aa range is pretty small, he'll send out the autos if he can find the enemy adc hitting a minion in a bad spot, but Thresh goes in, he's not all or nothing, he's all or a lot of other utility options. I would say he remains better at killing a sona than the other two, since he displaces harder than Leona, and ccs longer than blitzcrank

Jayrett2 votes

I guess I phrased that wrong, I meant that he doesn't have to all-in, he can choose to not fight if he engages with his hook and just back off. So as long as he can't get a good fight going, Sona can poke him and his adc down. Blitz pulls them to him instantly screwing with Sona's poking style and Leo will disrupt her if she engages sona or the adc.

QjTHqo3RTq4 votes

So, the reason why Sona counters Thresh, because Thresh relies on his hook to start the fight? I don't understand, Sona is almost always at risk of a hook coming at her after 6 because thresh can burst her pretty damn hard with his ult and thunderlords, so she either blows ult and flashes out of the box, or accepts the death. And if a Thresh can't land a hook, that's Thresh's problem, not Sona countering him

Jayrett1 votes

Sona should always be moving around and darting into q range to cast it. Thresh will have a very hard time hooking a sona that's always moving can use e for a speed boost to dodge. if thresh ults an sona, that's just plain wasteful of him.

The speed boost doesn't let you pass through minions (yay ally creep block), and the bonus movement speed often isn't enough to dodge a hook unless the Thresh fired it VERY late, or totally misread where you were going.

QjTHqo3RTq3 votes

Now I'm not sure how getting two kills with Thresh ult is a waste, it's very pretty common for him to blow it for all ins, even if he doesnt need to, and, once again, if the enemy is moving, then Thresh should still be able to hit his hooks, or better yet, start with a flay, into a death sentence. What stops a Thresh from hitting are you minions, dashes, and tanks, not his aim, if a Thresh can't hit his hooks in an open field, he shouldn't be playing Thresh, he should playing naut, who can start with his ult, and then auto, and use q to stop any dashes. Thresh has so many problems with champions like fizz or cait, not Sona, who in contrast, is a fish in a barrel.

The Bonecrush3r4 votes

you're joking right? ive seen sona's go 12/2 because of how strong her ap scaling is with a liche bane

QjTHqo3RTq8 votes

You know, if the game was decided by how good ap scalings were, AP Blitzcrank would be crushing, AP Aatrox would be an instaban, and Proffesor Milk would be in the LCS, in the greatest region, NA

Supreme Senpai693 votes

It's not her scaling it's her orgasmic burst damage. If your 3rd spell is a Q, then your next Q+AA will do bonus damage, it will proc Lich Bane's bonus damage, and it will proc thunderlord's bonus damage. I mean... her scaling doesn't hurt. But that's why she chunks people so hard.

I really wish it was an auto trigger (like how damage over time effects work with it), but as it stands you have to AA+3rd spell Q+ AA to trigger the thunderlord's bonus damage. neither the AA bonus damage of Q nor your passive count as a different source of damage (at least that's how it worked everytime i tried to land a simple Q+AA to trigger the mastery.

My Waifu Vanilla4 votes

Sona having to rely on artificial scaling to be relevant is the problem. Yeah, she does pretty good damage with Lich Bane and Thunderlord's and FQC triple hit and hell even Luden's if she buys it....but outside of those her damage is VERY mediocre for how squishy she is.

Taryn6 votes

I'm a Sona fangirl myself but your claim at 67% win rate is extremely misleading. The only proof of this I was able to find is in the last 14 games that you've played as Sona in the last month you won 9 of them, and so you have a 64% winrate with her. There is no evidence of having ever used her in ranked, as your only ranked game is this season playing as Janna once.

I mean, I've played Nautilus once in the last month and I won so I also have a 100% win rate with him.

FortisDominus6 votes

Wtf? sona is sitting at a solid 52% winrate (that means she is doing fine)

LankPants10 votes

This must have been mentioned a thousand times by now but I'll make it 1001, Winrate=/=Power.

Sona has a greater than 50% winrate but this really isn't the be-all and end-all and it certainly doesn't mean that she's strong. You have to consider other factors too when looking at champ power.

For example Sona has a well bellow average pick rate, which means that most of the players who play her are experienced with her as well as her being quite easy to play, so you'd really expect her winrate to be well above 50% based off of those facts anyway.

Using winrate alone as an argument is honestly a garbage argument.

Quepha3 votes

{quoted}

Using winrate alone as an argument is honestly a garbage argument.

It's not a garbage argument although it isn't perfect either.

Too bad people claiming Sona needs buffs have zero arguments for their cause as even the least experienced Sona players win more games than they lose.

LankPants11 votes

It's not a garbage argument although it isn't perfect either.

You really need to think of the implications of using purely winrate as an indicator of power. Doing so would sugest that champs like Lee Sin, Thresh and Lucian are terrible champions who are in clear need of buffs while champs like Sion, Amumu and Skarner are incredibly powerful. Clearly neither of these is really true so it's clear that something else is at work.

That's why pure winrate is a garbage argument. It just ignores champions like Lee rather than actually addressing anything about them.

Too bad people claiming Sona needs buffs have zero arguments for their cause as even the least experienced Sona players win more games than they lose.

Go and compare Nami to Sona quickly. Nami is clearly superior to Sona in terms of almost everything. Nami has higher damage than Sona, a stronger heal, a better speed boost, non-ult CC, better base stats ect. The only place that Sona actually beats Nami out in is ease of use, which as it turns out is more important to winrate than actual power.

Bodkins Odds5 votes

Honestly, I think this change should be done to both Sona's and Fizz's ults. Missing your ult because you're actually on top of your target is just frustrating for no reason.

Other than that, I think Sona's in a great place right now.

Fizz most definitely DOES NOT need this. #salt

Eh, his R isn't the part of Fizz that's obnoxious. That's entirely in his E. I don't mind giving his R QoL buffs.

Turn his E into his R, boost cd, weaken the chum somewhat, Fizz has been fixed.
