Making my champion pool is painful (how do you guys decide)

so me and my best friend just hit lv 30, and i need to pick roles. I've made a few dozen attempts to make a list, watched about half a dozen video on the subject and i feel no closer to finding a main and secondary roles or a rough champions roster to play in them. so I'm looking for inspiration, please tell some or all of the fallowing: your main and secondary roles, the size of your active champion pool (maybe the champions), how or why you decided on the prior and your thought on whats makes a good champion pool and how to go about learning choosing and learning roles (I'm kind of a researcher).

Example based on my best-friend (not useful) Role: Top then Mid Champion pool size: 2 How and why: i enjoy ekko and malzahar. the top suits my style for both better the mid for me. Progression: practice, were still learning (Thanks for your time)

Don't play champs just because people tell you to. Play because you like them, personality and gameplay. Just about every champ (item 3070 Yorick item 3070 Urgot item 3070) is viable and enjoyable.

Mechanics will come with learning and it's almost a good thing to pick a really hard champ to grasp early because you'll be ahead of the curve when you go into norms.

Little short story: friend of mine got me into league. Free week had this guy Gragas. Literally was one of my favorite champs just because of looks and the fact he carried a keg around. Malphite is just a big rock. I thought that was funny and thought he might be good. I also just like having a lot of hp and being hard to kill and a bully. Naturally, I got malphite as my first champ, and from there learned what tanks do.

play/buy the really cheap 450 ip champs because a majority of them have similar traits to really expensive ip champs. there's a bundle you can get as well for RP that can get you a good amount of champs with somewhat diverse and easy mechanics as well.

When looking at a champ, if the first thing you think is "this guy looks hard" don't feel obligated to try it, unless you like a grind.

Do not, I repeat, do not, buy any champ above 3150 unless you've played them for free

and save your refunds

You seem to like champions with lockdown. I would suggest adding nautilus and morgana to your top/mid roster.

Morgana is very powerful as an offtank, all she really needs is a roa and the three Mpen items (all of which as psuedo tank items anyway). Nautilus is a CC bot who is a fantastic tank and can support/jungle. with enough CDR he has very good chase potential.

The idea of a champion pool is to give you match advantages. I main support, but I cannot just say I like Braum and be done with it, as team comps require different utilities. I need to be proficient in at least 15 champs. Three for each "sub-class", not just because of picks and bans, but they all bring something different to the table. Tanks: Vanguard/Warden Mage: Enchanter/Disrupter/Healer

The way I worked it was deciding first: what do I like, in general? did I always like the idea of knights? Or was it wizards? I have always liked wizards, so I chose the AP to make up a majority of my pool. After that, I just chose a champion I thought looked cool (anivia), and ran with her. I repeated this to get more champions, in that when I decided a champion looks cool, or something in his kit speaks to me, I play them. Thus, I play champs such as blitz, velkoz, Soraka, Nocturne, Thresh, Jhin, and a bunch of others.

Basically, once you've decided on your playstyle (knight, magician, healer, whatever), pick the cool champs in that area, and play

really depends on what you want to accomplish

if you wanna climb you pick the meta champions

if you wanna drop ELO you pick Lee sin

thats how I see it

Not only was that pun bad but lee sin is NOT a bad pick by any means and he's freelo since no one dodges a Q or actually defend against invades until gold.

You're level 30, you should have played enough games to know which champions you enjoyed until now. Pick them.

I started to play the game back in season 2, right after Volibear was intrduced. I started with GP, because he's a fucking pirate. At level 15 or so, I found Shaco. His kit really fit with my playstyle and I've mained him since then. I've played so much of the champion that I can play him at any role (except adc, as no team has allowed me to do so yet) and suceed at least in lane.

I also liked Gnar the second he was released, and as I enjoyed his kit, I bought him and turned him into my second main.

Those are my only two mains. Shaco is by far my primary main and is probably the reason I still play League of Legends. I use him for Mid and Jungle. Gnar is my secondary main, that I use whenever I'm not confident on the match up I'll have on top lane, as I know I can come back with him even if I'm 2 or 3 kills behind.

They are the bulk of my champion pool. With that said, I'm also reasonably good with Brand. I picked him up because I like to blow things up and can't play Ziggs well no matter how much I try. He's my go to mid if I know the enemy laner would destroy my Shaco (for example, an Annie).

Darius is my second main top, mostly because I love his brutal playstyle. I played him once pre rework, got into a 2v1 fight against the top laner and the jungler. While I fought both of them, mid decided to join. I killed both. When mid arrived I was at low health, but had the time to do one more combo. I died, but the bleed got him. Since then I started to enjoy the shit out of the champion. When I can't trust on my team to follow my initiations as Gnar, this is what I play.

For top I also play Mundo, Singed and more recently Swain. Because I like being beefy and surviving things I shouldn't be able to.

Whenever I get stuck as ADC, I usually pick a bursty one, as Lucian, Graves or Ez. I do that because I had a great time with assassins, and being able to quickly chunk a massive part of the enemies health bar feels good.

If you pay attention, you will notice that most of my pool consists of champions I enjoyed playing with, not champions that are meta or strong on their own. All you have to do is play enough games to find out what's your playstyle and which champions fit well into it.
