Removing the ability to ban a teammates "pre-pick"

NickolaiHC··4 votes·1,262 views

Earlier today, and many times before, I have played with people who are either not aware that they are banning a teammates potential pick, or they troll and ban it on purpose. I see no reason why this should even be a possibility. To me it only makes sense that you can pre-pick and show what you are thinking, thus figuring out a good comp, and also letting your teammates know not to ban the champ you want.

Please share your thoughts on the matter.

EDIT1: I am going to include JesseBear's comment here. This expressed some of the points that I had trouble putting words to.

The problem is that more often than not, allies actually avoid banning your preferred champion and make meaningful decisions about team composition based on pick intent. It is only on rare occasions that a teammate will ban your champion, whether deliberately or inadvertently. If you are so afraid of being trolled that you refrain from displaying your pick intent, then you are also forfeiting the benefits that it could potentially give both you and your team. If you do display your intent, then you are taking the risk of revealing your preference to trolls. This really isn't a decision that should be forced. In my personal opinion, it would be better to just eliminate that choice by preventing people from banning pick intents, as Nickolai proposed. In such scenarios as Archangel Avacyn referenced, I believe that before banning your teammate's intended champion, you should reason with them first and get their permission. If they refuse to consent, then you have no business limiting their options. If they agree, then they can simply change their pick intent, allowing you to ban that particular champion.

I'd like the ability to ban [FotM OP Champion] even if the last pick on my team pick-intents them.

Otherwise, the enemy team will just pick them first and I have to play against them.

If you want to avoid trolls banning your pick, just wait until banning phase ends to select them. This leaves your team enough time to pick around them without letting trolls ban them.

If my last pick wants to play Hecarim, i'm banning Hecarim because there's no damn way Hecarim's going to be open by the time that guy's picking.

I don't think you should be able to ban first two pick intents but there should at least be a warning/ confirmation for all of them.

it would be real funny though, cant ban zed because my support prepicked him XD,getting my prepicked champion banned has only hapened to me once when my teams support wanted to troll his way to stealing my role.but well if someone wants to troll he will always find a way.

solution: dont prepick and give them ammo.

I included your comment in the original post. This is exactly what I was trying to communicate.

if your teammates ban your pick even if you did not pick intended, then it was meant to be.

Last pick wants whatever FotM champ there is. Think of banning it, but "ban it and I troll" Other team gets it.

This is why this is a bad idea.

At that point, hopefully, your first/second pick would be willing to swap them. League is all about playing as a team, and I feel like banning someone's intended pick will get you a flamer, or worse, a troll on your team. To me the risk of having the other team pick a FotM champion does not outweigh having a troll on your team. What spurred this whole topic on was an experience earlier, when one of my teammates banned another guy's intended pick. The victim (lacking a better word) of course got mad and started acting out.

People trolling in champ select will always be a thing, and having the ability to ban out a champ who needs to be banned even though a teammate is hovering them is a good thing. My thoughts.

Ya it is annoying but I wouldn't make it unable to ban a prepick champion. For example take a very strong pick ban champion like Sona before this rework. If your support wants to play Sona but is last pick on red side then I would still ban it because they would be able to pick it before your support is able to. (Even more so if I don't like having a sona as my support or I dont own Sona to pick for my ally).

If you can't ban pre-picks, then trolls have a strong as hell tool to ensure that the enemy team has access to OP and frustrating champions by hovering those champs during ban phase.

I think a simple warning should be enough. A message pops up and says your ally has prepicked a champion. that can remove the accidental bans.

I had a last pick select, Jhin, the enemy team picked them before it got to them, so they locked Yasuo and called mid... until someone was forced to take one for the team and dodge.

No, for two reasons.

  1. Said above, 4th/5th pick preventing the ban of a pick/ban champion is going to screw over a lot of teams.
  2. You can change your pick intent during ban phase, so this is yet another thing you would now have to lock in.
