Gold 1 matched against diamond?

If you go to my match history and look at the Jhin he is diamond 5 14 lp. Why is there a diamond if Im gold 1 thats like 6 ranks above me, just wondering.

Guessing it was in normals? He was most likely queuing with someone, or his normal mmr just sucked. I constantly play with plats and diamonds, so don't feel too bad, I am S2.

riots losing players so they have to delve deep into the "whos online pool" just to start the match already.

He was probably Plat 1, then got promoted.

i was running into plats when i was still bronze 1 (in ranked) so i'm not overly surprised you're running into diamonds in gold 1, especially where you're so close to plat anyway. also with dynamic queue he could be queued with someone with such a low mmr that your mmr is the average of the two

This MMR system is weird....When i was plat 5 in my promos i got que'd with Gold 3/Gold 3/ Silver 1 / Silver 2 - something like that but I just remember having like 2 silvers. Just like your situation, I didn't even think it was possible to be queing with someone a few tiers away from you?

--Thankfully I won that promos and moved onto Plat 4, I checked the MMR once again and I had Plat 2/ Plat 4 /Plat 5 / Plat 5 on my team. Odd Match making right there.

It matches by MMR, not by rank. Rank is just a rough estimate of MMR. Your MMR is quite high, as you are consistently playing with high plats, and you are likely to get promoted. His MMR is a bit low, but not enough to get demoted, since you have to be like 5 divisions down to get demoted to the previous tier.
