I feel there's a lot of hidden potential to
that Riot wants to unlock, but that's going to take a lot of time and careful design to do right. Aatrox was initially released with the intention of working like a drain tank, i.e. a durable champion who derived their resilience from large amounts of healing over time (sort of like
,
or
), but so far that hasn't been implemented properly on him, which is one of the reasons why he isn't in a good state (he's extremely binary and feels either too weak to function or too strong to ever kill). Making that part of him work properly would also likely open the door to drain tanking on other champions, since the mechanic itself is something that Riot has not only struggled to implement well, and hasn't succeeded so far, but also that's been debated internally (Xypherous, for example, is skeptical that drain tanking would even be possible to implement properly). Aside from that, there's also the issue of poor power distribution on his kit: his attack speed steroid is diluted across two separate boosts, and Riot mentioned his ult was really lackluster and thematically uninteresting, so it's likely they're going to update it. Hopefully, and I'm less sure about this, Riot will try to blend his lore better into his kit, since he could have the ability to empower allies and inspire bloodlust, which sounds like a great and unique effect to have in teamfights, but currently has perhaps the most cookie-cutter kit in the game so far.
