Pre-Season 5 Smite Use in Lane?

I was pretty indifferent about the jungle changes in the pre-season since I was a top/mid lane, but this makes me want to look more into the changes that were made, more specifically with smite. I was Irelia laning against a Warwick who took smite as one of his summoner spells, a fact that wasn't all that significant at first. Until his first back the only thing he could use smite for was the occasional minion, but when he came back to lane he brought a Skimisher's Saber with him, and it was at this point the lane went really down hill for me.

Thanks to the fact he brought a lot of mana potions with him so he could continue using his Q and ult and sustain in a drawn out fight, plus the Skirmisher's Saber reducing my damage in all ins against him made fighting him a no go for me. He was the only champion on the opposing team that I feared in a 1v1 because knew I couldn't out damage in with his sustain and my own damage output taking a hit. Perhaps this was due to the match up of Warwick vs Irelia (This was my first of such a match in my memory, so I wouldn't know), but I believe that Skirmisher's Saber did make a difference, which makes me question how viable it is on other champions.

This is more to sate my curiosity than cry for immediate change back to the old jungle. Has anyone else seen someone take advantage of the new Hunter's Machete paths outside of the jungle, or can you think of ways other champions could use this to their advantage? Let me know, I'd like to hear other's thoughts on this matter.

WW excels at 1v1 thanks to his passive and Q. All he did with Skirmishers and smite was prevent you from bursting him before he got his passive stacked on you and could out sustain your damage. Baiting out the smite, then going all in with ignite could have cinched the lane for you.

Yea, baiting out his smite before all-inning him was probably the best chance you would have. Either that or go for a champ that excels in short/bursty fights.
