Just took aatrox into a ranked game. Mistake.
Dude needs a hard buff. Needs a small attack speed buff and a tank buff. Felt like i was behind as soon as the enemy had 1 dorans blade ahead of me.

I had a guy take Aatrox as AP mid in my last ranked game... He won lane. We won the game anyway because we trashed every lane, but the fact that he had such huge burst as AP Aatrox was insane.
He needs a few changes, but there are other champs that need them a lot more right now.
Statistically speaking, you should have won.
I agree with KyroRayne, his ap ratios are far better than AD ones, but because he's atk speed champ (or most think he is) they build AD. There's a reason Gunblade was a must when he got released.
I agree with KyroRayne, his ap ratios are far better than AD ones,
His AP ratio total is 1.6 for his QWER, where average QWER ratio for AP's is right around 2.2. Not exactly support-levels of terrible where it's barely exceeding 1, but you're not exactly going to overpower a typical mage: most of which have a significant advantage in range, base damages, base HP and HP scaling, and AP scaling.
Aatrox's AD ratio for a QWER combo is 3.2, and if you actually play Aatrox in a way you can make use of his potential 100% bonus attack speed and squeeze 3 auto-attacks into your ham-fest his AD ratio for his combo jumps up to 5.2 (where AP still stays at 1.6).
Even with AP being ~50% the price of AD per point and in ~50% larger quantities than AD on major items, I'm not sure I'd call Aatrox's AP ratios far better than his AD ratios. Especially considering 1 of that 1.6 is reliant on Aatrox's objectively terrible ultimate that, as an ultimate, has a pretty lengthy cooldown.
Also: Aatrox's passive is one of the best passives in the game and his ultimate is one of the worst. Playing heavily around Aatrox's passive and mastering it's uses is going to offer a much better payoff than playing around his ultimate. And with playing around his passive you can also master having full control over the x3 healing from Blood Thirst.
That said: ranking a magic-damage poke skill first as an otherwise committed AD champion has some serious advantages in-lane, as it makes you a royal pain in the patoot to counterbuild. Also shifts the paradigm pretty significantly with how to deal with you in-lane, as opponents expecting to punish all-in multiple AA trades suddenly getting chunked with endless poke can really through people off.
Same general deal with AP Nasus or ranking Yasou's dash first. It's more the base ratios of the magic-damage skill you're using than actual AP to get that to work. Really strong when you're level 9 and skill ranks are 5/1/2/1 and you're just poking each other behind minions. Not so much when everyone's getting to that 5/5/5/3 spot and they're pumping out 2~3 solid QWE skills in a very short time-frame with ham-fests.
