An Alternative to Rune Pages, with added Functionality
Hey all,
In my opinion, Rune pages serve as pretty unnoticed and sometimes invisible forms of power being presented into the game with little more interaction than just placing and dragging stats onto a page and pasting that page onto a champion in-game. It took me a long while to be able to look at a player's stats at the beginning of a game and know more or less what sort of Rune page they are using. What Runes, and with it the stats it brings a player should be telegraphed to every player in the game in the interests of communicating strengths and weaknesses even if Runes are a minor part of the game.
As for my suggestion,
A 7th item slot should be allotted to everyone with a partially or fully filled out ''Rune page'' (notice the quotation marks). In place of dragging Runes onto a Rune page, the feature would be replaced with a sort of item customization screen. The item being customized would change depending on the type of ''Rune page'' being edited. For example, a Crossbow would be edited for a page with a combination of Attack Speed and Attack Damage or an Enchanted Shield for a combination of Armor and Magic Resist heavy pages. The depth of detail can vary such as having a page with some added Critical Strike Damage adds a Noxian Insignia to a Breastplate or Movement Speed can change a sword into small daggers.
The customized item would appear in-game on the 7th item slot and would show the stats granted to user. This would help communicate, for example, that a player has prioritized mana regeneration over magic resist and perhaps switching lanes to send a mage against them is a good strategy. A partially or fully filled out ''Rune page'' will be required for the item slot to be filled. Another platform where players can customize their item in other ways such as purchasing damaging parts or defensive materials can also be established should the need to move away from traditional Rune pages arise.
This idea would add some fun into customizing our champion's stats (I'm a huge RPG fan), allow allies and enemies to read strengths and weaknesses of a champion more easily and perhaps kindle some curiosity as to what our favorite champions would like to wield.
