Is Climbing Impossible?

KOR Philly··4 votes·2,955 views

So, question: how do you climb in the rank queues???? Is the only way of rising duo queuing? Why is this rank system so corrupt. I'm never matched with people that have the same skill level as me, especially my teammates. Every game (and I really do mean every fukn game), I have a feeder. Tell me what I can do to stop getting these r%%%%%s in my games. Like, I don't mind a couple games, but if I keep getting them every fukn game, that's not fair. I'm on a 6 game L streak in plat 3 (was plat 2) with a 55% WR (was higher and could be higher if i didnt get so many r%%%%%s), the longest losing streak before i started losing so much was 2 L. Now that this is so repetitive, wtf can I do to change this??? I was told duoing queuing was the way to go, but nope. All it did was bring my mmr down even when I was winning. I only gain 15LP/ win and lose 19LP. I find that this doesn't make any sense. Riot, are you able to help me by giving me some advice or something because I'm really getting fed up with this.

If your account has over ~80 games yep Riot has hard stuck your unless you get boosted.

I made it to gold in 50 games. I went from B1 to Silver 1 with 0 promos won. If the next game being a win would promote me I dodged the lobby till it failed the promo. Every single game outside of placements was as a support.

Your currently at. 513W 545L Do you ever stop to think that possibly its the other 9,522 Players but the 1 consistent variable in ever match you play?

So of course you did. New account as smurf, Duoed with smurfs = Hit gold in under 100 games...

Now WTF does this mean

How do you promote without playing Promotions?

Sounds like you just took a back door around Riots #1 climb slowing mechanic

You can skip promos if you far outpace the tier you're in at the time you hit promos. I did it on my bronze to silver transition. How I placed bronze, I have no idea. But I did. I won the next few matches, skipped promos, won a few more, skipped silver 2 placements (edit: all together).

See looks like Kai Guy is gaming the system to skip promos (where we see the game stack teams against you)

Dodges make it so you lose LP but not MMR.

If he is dodging Promos he is dodging the hard hits to MMR that Riot puts in place to slow your climb.

He Literally is skipping the system that 90% of us are fighting against and that is holding us back. To me I call it exploiting a design bug. Explains why he thinks the system is all fine and dandy.

Im going to have to try this and see how it works.

Yeah I read it that way, too. Which is why I think there are gatekeepers at chokepoints. And he is an honorary member just because the system recognizes it? IDK. Flip the coins, eventually you'll get there. If you're good enough to wait outside the gates, you're good enough to be in the kingdom. It seems. Is the logic.

Only I don't do this on my main ever? It only works if your MMR is dramatically higher then your Rank which typically happens exclusively with high uncertainty (New accounts or after a soft reset.)

I don't have issues with promo games because I just don't treat them as relevant. Not because im abusing some exploit. Its never prevented me from getting to gold or plat by playing my promotions.

I do "game" preseason. If I want to start lower rank I play my worst role in preseason. If I want to have a quicker climb I try hard on my mains during preseason. It wont help me get above my skill but it gives me the option to impact what my MMR after placements can be.

Any one who doesn't understand how to judge if their MMR is higher or lower then their Rank is gonna shot themselves in the foot if you try to dodge to climb.

Gatekeepers in my experience tend to be folks who sank below Division 4 then have ego trips and attitude issues where they Freak out and Throw games over nothing. Biggest mistake I see folks do in promos is they act like its special and don't play their usual ways. I see Folks get kill hungry and make mistakes that shouldn't happen or they get terrified of deaths and play passively putting all impact onto other players.

The reason I don't have issues with MMR systems is the math is good, because MMR is just a derivative of Elo. I used to believe strongly in Elo hell season 1. My icon is the result of that. By never focusing on myself and writing things off as enemy or teammates or devs… I improved not at all. I played dota all stars, I know what MM without MM looks like. Its awfull. There was a reason Banlists for Dota games started to include Elo ratings.

Kai Guy3 votes

I got my MMR, the stat that matters for MM Far higher then my Accounts Title By using things that Drop LP but not MMR. I did not duo, I played supports. Once I capped out around G3-G2 MMR even a 50% win rate was enough for me to climb because my MMR was not sinking or climbing and the LP system is made to move your Title to match the correct MMR range.

Honestly speaking some folks should just dodge promos. This attitude of PROMO BETTER TRY HARDER... eh? Like if your standard play style is enough to break even or climb... so why change that? Promos are a distraction and don't matter at all. Just there to prevent luck for high uncertainty accounts then later are just a bench mark to keep folks aiming for a realistic goal. No impact on quality outside of idiots who freak out and fk their own play up over them for no good reason.

Like... Promos... don't even slow you down? They help keep folks in the right brackets if they cant break 50%. You get a free win for most Tiers if you failed one. So unless your screwing up and cant win 1 in 2 games or 2 in 4 (50%) You can climb.

At the point your struggling in promos odds are your at the top end of your skill, your best games stop impacting enough. Of course... That's just my view. I consistently value my play because I am the only person I know is on my team.

I suppose, if I blamed teammates for losses, if I said that my bad games having bad stats are 100% other peoples fault and not a reflection of me what so ever... I would have a different viewpoint on it. I know MMR functions as a Mean average. So its good and bad, best and worst. If I ignored my worst and most of my bad, I would have a inflated view of my skill and be very upset at the game not reflecting that.

So.... About that 1k Games. No comment still? Is he just a magic exception?

How about my account. I have a few years where I managed to improve and it took over 100 games for some of them.

5050BS2 votes

So two things.

  1. You did duo (op.gg shows it)
  2. So yes you do game the system.

This explains so much

Kai Guy2 votes
  1. I did not duo. I was on the same team as some players a few times but at no point was it from me chosing to que with them. As you cant have 3 man partys in Solo/duo if you look at those accounts youd realize hey they are the premade not me. I have 2 games with DR and MR back to back. They have 8 games with each other and play normal togeather. Sorry to disappoint you but I was honest.

  2. Not really but by all means go ahead and start dodging your promos if you think its going to help. Enjoy the Hours of waiting for que timer ristriction to end. If you dodge everything you don't get promo helper, you have to lose a set to get that. Possible you could game it by dodgeing after you lost one if that counts but I never tested for that. Oh.... and you need to have the ability to raise your MMR above your LP to "game" it. About 3 division gap for it to play catch up. Promos quite literally are no different from any other game and its your mistake to treat them like such.

End of the day to SAVE TIME I ended up playing and winning my promos to gold 4 because trying to grind to G2-G1 MMR was tedious as that's closer to my level of skill so easy wins became less common and my WR was closer to 50%. Trying to Dodge woulda have taken me more time, not less.

Your better off just ignoring promos completely because there's no reason to treat them any differently then a regular match. Its a MMR system, Riots "Leauge" is just a fancy coverup to distract stuck players and keep them engaged.... you know, bench marks that don't really mean anything but function as a carrot or goal so some folks who are stuck will still grind hundreds... or in some cases, thousand+ games trying to get to the next tier.

When, by definition the average player will never climb or sink from the average MMR no matter how many games they play.

Why you don't actualy read up on the topics of Elo and MMR but constantly whine about them is beyond me. You cite gameplay, which is not used. Win, Loss, Distribution model, probability to win built from that model, uncertainty, class interval, law of averages, law of large numbers. Its a mathematics system not a gameplay design system. There is a reason Elo rating works just as well for Tinder as it does for chess, scrabble, or baseball. I can make an Elo system that would function to rate honesty because Lie or Truth is Binominal and proven % of both would give me the ability to measure people by truthfulness via pairwise comparisons. You cite that its to make things grindy, Like you can add more Grind to eternity? You say its rigged to control Player distribution when MMR is on a population curve for skill and Ranks are decided by Riot arbitrarily for what % of the curve fall into X rank so they literally control distribution with out even needing to add extra systems or insanely complex algorithms to accomplish this that are prone to being defeated by human inconsistency. Your bad games are teams faults. Your losses are teams fault. Your teams are riots fault. 1 link in all your games is you and its getting to the point your pretty close to having played with 10,000 other accounts and you still refuse to accept you don't stand out in your current MMR? 1000 games can climb, still waiting for you to show some acknowledgment that I showed you an account that did what you said cant be done.

Also. like almost every other time you and I talk. Same offer. Simply Add me and we can work on getting you to gold. You only need to be like 7% better then the majority player. Offer Stands.

I'm currently grinding a very old account that was hardstuck Bronze for several seasons. As of this post it's sitting at Silver 1 with a 56% win rate and 176 games played.

https://na.op.gg/summoner/userName=icepacc

Like my main account, this account too started in low Bronze but it took less than 200 games to hit Gold elo instead of 1000 this time around. I applied what I learned from getting to Gold the previous two times and I can say, it really works for me. Although this account is currently Silver 1, I actually did get to Gold promos a week or two back but lost them and I've kinda been bouncing between Sillver 1 and Silver 2 since then.

However, make no mistake, there is 0 and I mean ZERO doubt in my mind that I will get this account to Gold as well. I will be conservative and say I expect to get it there within the next 100 games. Most likely it will actually be within the next 30 games. The MMR is kinda fucked which makes it a bit tedious but NOT impossible.

Can you provide the link here? I'd be interested to read more.

As an update to a previous conversation we were so unfortunately intertwined, I finally hit gold last night. Still a total coinflip how I got there. Then for the lols, I played a match after that and won. That match was far easier than any of the promos preceding it.

You seem to be in complete denial that there's some background system in place that trends players towards certain outcomes (at some points or to some noticeable degree). I'm still convinced there are chokepoints. Or maybe there should be a sincere discussion on what it is that causes, in my case and example, promos to be 10x harder than the games before and after them (in general; some exceptions apply in any set of X games regardless of what kind of match it is).

EDIT: I think I got my posters confused. The other person is in this thread, I just got my names confused.

That was a Fiorawillcarry post Some one who typically is less then constructive in their thread/posts.

5050 is a stubborn fellow. I showed I can climb to gold with 5% of the games he has but the dude still refuses to treat me with good faith. I really hope he starts trying to "game" the system like I did because it requires a dramatically higher MMR then promos to move up. His knowledge on Elo systems is terrible. Hell he cant even tell if some one is duoing or just on the same team as a player on op.gg. The guy just does not seem to care about learning the math or logic. Anything that does not fit his narrative is ignored. How many times did I ask him to respond to the linked 1000 game to gold account? Notice 0 replies because it directly contradicts his belief that if your "stuck" its impossible to climb not because of skill but because big bad rito wants to keep the man down.

Why? He doesn't care for anything that's not justification his for personal perception of skill vs reality. Finds excuses, its To rig population distributions to different tiers and/or its to make the game more grindy. Yet.... rigging results breaks the measurement of skill, the same measurement that needs to be accurate... for them to be able to rig games. Cant use a forced WR to have WR represent an accurate skill. Cant use a Forced MMR value and still have MMR represent accurate skill. Riot already has 100% control of population distribution as they control what their ranks mean in relation to the population curve. It is set off % because influx and outflux of players means no static value will be usable. Grind? when the average player by definition requires a climb time to reach the top of the ladder in the relm of Eternity. Brilliant idea! Riot clearly is going to use a more complicated system that does not work mathematically to accomplish the end goal of infinity plus 1!

You had a reply to me that you did not post as a reply so I did not read it prior.

So I have about 100 games ranked and finally hit gold. We're in a similar boat it seems. So if I read you right, you're basically affirming the division chokepoint system that balances itself out at "enough games played". That does make it carrot on a stick for people who otherwise belong in the divison they're trying to get to. How do you define that?

Not exactly. The idea is that you want the weakest player in the game to have opportunity to beat the strongest in a "'fair" match. A game where one player can only ever lose is inherently unfair. The goal is to have ratings accurate enough to use this for your MM system to build fair games. So a best game on the weakest player can beat a bad or average game of the best player. Ideally you want a exact and equal skill for as many players as possible. Reality is you simple don't have infinite # of players any given second in any given que so you will not see this happen much. Hence using a Range for MM. Tighter range tends to be higher quality but as gameplays entirely on players a on paper fair and close game can go to trash and there's absolutely nothing MM can do to solve that.

Elo systems are built around class intervals and the standard deviation expectations. You need to break out of a reasonable deviation to prove you don't belong in a Class interval. Its more about the gap between wins and losses then any specific WR. 100% WR... for... 2 games is not a big deal. 80% out of 100 is pretty dramatic. WR is expected to sink closer to 50% as the expectation is when you represent the average player your going to be with peers so you see equal odds. 50% is not forced, its a naturally occurring value. Same way if your 150 pounds and you lined everybody up by weight, your going to be near folks closest your weight why its measured out correctly. Averages occur in nature, they exist even unmeasured. Elo systems are designed to measure them, its literally a Rating system.

Anyhow so the point is the folks who climb to a point they need to play their very best and also for the enemies to not play at their very best is when you get stuck and feel the most helpless because ya have to rely on a higher # of teammates to preform well or enemies to preform badly. Not great odds.

@transparancy. Its not a false grind but it can be disheartening. Something like 100-300 games for high system accuracy, less depending on if Riot added some League specific Bayesian inference. Imo the issue is riot gives ranks out very fast with out setting the expectation that at high uncertainty the system expects to be wrong and need to adjust if it was.

Large #s is a time proven method to remove RNG and luck as variables. That's why the house always wins.

Feel free to bug me if you have any interest in Elo and MMR. I can't always provide exact information on Riots thou I'm pretty good at research and tend to learn about things that I find nifty. I will be clear if its anecdotal or just in adherence to theory or if I am directly quoting riot.

End of the day, you have already climbed. Plat is a good deal above the starting MMR.

When you put it like that, it makes a lot more sense. So it feels coinflip because it is basically coinflip. You're waiting to either be so strong the enemy isn't a real threat (so you're just passing through X in other words), or hopefully because the "average" for the subgroup will make mistakes you can cash in on in order to secure your victory.

If I am hearing you correctly.

That it would pan out that "yes you can make it to gold, but can you stay (I.e., are you "worthy") might be the best question to ask. That gold has a bumper that locks you in once there presuming you stop trying might be what really drives the issue.

Gold is "the place" to be for the average player, self included. I couldn't care less about platinum at this point. I want to be good enough to win average games. So to not make gold feels pretty gutpunch to me.

That one isn't "good enough" might be a bad choice of words. Given how the games fare outside of placements, when gold-heavy for example, indicates that the average gold player isn't necessarily better than you. But if their carry is stronger than you and/or your team, and/or you don't hunt that guy down and block him at all costs (where reasonable) is what weights the coin one direction or the next.

If what I am trying to ask/say makes sense.

I get it in more mathematical terms. Now. But it feels so artificial as a point of observation.

Kai Guy1 votes

Its not quite a coin flip if your even. You can get a bit higher because distribution odds favor your team to win if your not the weakest link. If you make the assumption that your not the weakest player in your games then your looking at that weakest player in a match being favored to distribute to the enemy team. 4 slots your team, 5 slots enemy team.

Your only really stuck when your brushing into a range where enough players just playing ok will do as well or better then your good games and you find your self being that weakest player. Most folks don't consider bad or meh games to be their skill and only go with good or exceptional matches for personal grading, in a system built to use a mean average. Silly imo but everybody does it.

The best way to visualize Ranked RNG is Dice rolls. Coinflips can represent 50% odds very well but to get a grasp on MMR you want to account for individuals impact not just the binary results. Consider a players skill to be like a dice average. https://anydice.com/ for a visual. Teams are comprised of 5 dice that may or may not have equal side values. Any 1 game might see some one roll a 1. Any 1 game will have equal odds. But when you start looking at multiple games the average will start to collapse into a curve. rolling a 6 sided dice 2 times has higher odds the average will balance into 7 then any other number. as you add more data the Average will show up more and more. Eventually even if you did not know the face value of a dice you can look at the # of games and the average to get a good guess for what the dice is.

Coin flips work better as a metaphor for 1v1 or set rooster of team A vs Team B.

Close games should be all teams more or less equal sided dice. With population or duoing this is not always the case. With low games the system is still trying to figure out how many faces are one a players skill dice. Bayesian inference in this case would be to see that a dice has rolled 20, so you know it can not possibly be any less then at least a D20. The league equivalent is probably WR in relation to MMR over a set # of games for relevance. Or riot might not even bother trying to make a specific optimization for speed.

The thing is, the mathematics work really well for sorting by class intervals and distributions around averages. They do not make any impact on game quality or gameplay because they simply don't look at it. Yes a mismatched game is low quality, but that does not imply a correctly matched game will be high quality. MMR is only to build a skill ladder properly and its by far the best MM system out there with current tech at doing this. The math is time honored and peer reviewed for ages.

How fun or what gameplay is like is not a consideration. Looking out and caretaking any 1 individual is not a consideration. Its a very unfeeling uncaring system but that not why you see gameplay issues. PVP = Player generated gameplay. If everybody plays feast or famine games will be feast or famine regardless. No matter how close MMR values are. If the average player doesn't consider teamplay then gameplay lacks teamplay.

right now, the things that this game needs the most are improved behavior system and for folks to remember that its ultimately a team game built around comp synergy and interaction. Everybody is distracted by seeing super high elo players come and pubstomp and want to imitate that but its just not a realistic picture. The best way to climb is to self improve and that's a lot of looking at mistakes made as well as keeping an eye on the meta incase your main picks drop in viability because of other players picks. As the dice metaphor goes, you can up your average not just by adding higher faces but by also erasing the bottom ones.

Atm, im struggling because my best picks don't quite make enough impact when people ignore a reasonable teamcomp and players are so stupid they keep playing tilted. Tired of the folks who give up after 2-3 kills gaps and lack the ability to even have a rough estimate for matchups and powerspikes. Trying to shift into more front line friendly supports but nothings polished to a level I will make deciding impact. annoying but that's the downside of only being invested in a small pool.

That does make it carrot on a stick for people who otherwise belong in the divison they're trying to get to. How do you define that?

There's just something that isn't clicking.

It's like: getting into the club is hard, but once you're in, it's so amazing and worth it and nothing like you imagined. Then you want the invite to the after-party. Same deal all over again.

Unless you're already invited to the after-party. Then you just go in the back door. Which is reasonable. No one wants to play against diamonds in a bronze game, for example.

If there was more transparency in the process, it might be more tolerable. But can we at least just admit it's a false grind, even if it ultimately protects the integrity of the system. . . and that some, perhaps many people, on one side of the border or the other are just (un)lucky? Or impatient. Or both?
