How does LP gaining and loss work?

I was just wandering how it works, because sometimes i get around 18 Lp when i win a game, and other times it drops. Same thing for losses. Can someone explain the system? Thanks! :3

I think it's based around 2 numbers. Your actual MMR and your theoretical MMR (Matchmaking Rating). When your actual MMR gets closer to your theoretical MMR, your LP gains/losses get smaller/bigger respectively, as you have to prove you can consistently play at your MMR or higher.

Either that or you're just at a higher division/tier and you have to prove you can perform consistently enough to be allowed to go up, therefore it's naturally harder to climb.

I just happen to be dabbling in the boards right now. :P

Just to give you another perspective: I was Gold IV when I got placed, and I was getting 29-30 LP per win and only losing 10-15. I was performing at a higher level than where the system had me currently so it was a lot easier to climb. Now I'm gold II 85 LP and now I'm only getting about 23-25 per win and losing 15-20, making it somewhat harder to climb since the system thinks this is where I should be.

My situation is similar to yours actually (concerning the first part, of course). In the beggining of the season i was placed at silver 2, and I was winning every game, gaining around 20 LP per game (losing about 7-8). I got in promotions really quick, but I lost them. Since I lost them i started losing every game (still losing 7-8 LP) and I found myself with 6 Lp in Silver 2. Recently I started playing again and started winning again, but when I lost one i lost about 20 LP, so thats why I was wandering ^^
