Bruiser/Anti-Carry Thresh Top Viability

Hello GD,

I was wondering on your opinions on the viability of a Bruiser/Anti-Carry Thresh top, because I've had both mixed results and mixed views from playing that role. Below I'll briefly state what i see as the pros and cons of the Chain Warden filling this role.

Pros:

  1. Thresh's Kit contains an ungodly amount of CC and Utility.
  1. Bruiser/Anti-Carry Thresh is more costly to build against due to having hybrid damage.
  2. Passive allows for almost infinitely scaling armor and AP as the game progresses.
  3. Unique AA animation is relatively simple to cancel.
  4. Unusual Pick
  5. Respectable AP Scalings on abilities
  6. Thrives against AD Heavy Comps

Cons:

  1. No innate escapes
  1. Low base stats compared to many other top lane champions
  2. Basic Attack wind-up only reduced by 0.25%/ 1 attack speed, as opposed to the standard 1%/1 attack Speed. Making orb walking slightly more difficult as compared to other ranged champs.
  3. Needs a competent team to be effective after lane phase.
  4. Low Base Movement Speed.
  5. Innately Terrible Waveclear.
  6. No Armour/Lvl

Soul Drop Algorithm for smaller creeps: "The drop rate for souls from small minions is 33%. However, the probability adjusts dynamically. If you are above or below your expected quota of soul drops from small minions, the probability lowers or rises by a small amount until you are back at your quota of drops. It is worth stressing that this only takes into account souls dropped, and not souls collected." Souce : http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Thresh

Why Thresh Top? As Thresh's passive isn't really affected by solo-laning as opposed to duo-laning, he has no seemingly good reason to go top over support, and as he would be in a solo lane, his abilities couldn't be as frequently followed up on unless the jungle sat top lane. However, I'd argue Thresh's viability as a solo-laner comes from:

  1. The relative ease at which he can feed his jungler (Due to his plethora of cc abilities), which will then affect all lanes, buffs, and objectives around the map. (As opposed to having to feed either his Marksman or jungle.
  1. His strong disengages and relative safety in melee lanes which require the enemy champion to use their abilities to deal the majority of their damage. (ie: Riven)

His lantern + Q means junglers won't need gapclosers to gank his lane.

I personally can take Thresh top and do really well. But..... most people couldn't. It really depends how well you would normally do with Thresh. It's one of those things where I personally know it's viable and even works well, but I destroy people who try it all the time because they don't have their mechanics down the way they should. This means they either get outraded by me, or their jungler has to sit top all game while my bot lane and mid lane have a hey day (yes; i can 2 v 1 thresh + jungler all day). So...... I would recommend trying it if you are a Thresh main who is REALLY REALLY good with the role, but ..... yeah it requires a very high skill level to pull off successfully.

I hear your points. But as an ADC main, I'd rather that you left the Thresh pick open to the support. (Or just take support as him.) He's just too retardedly strong as a support when handled well that I wouldn't like a top pick of him to deny him to my support.

OTOH, if the support's already locked in as someone else, he might be viable as a counterpick.

The whole reason for even using thresh over other supports is his lantern. Without a partner, that goes to waste.

I completely agree with you, which is why I said earlier that it would effectively solidify jungle ganks. However, I feel like support Thresh's lantern is somewhat underwhelming in the laning phase. His lantern basically serves 2 functions (in regards to mobility): Engaging and Disengaging. My problem with utilizing support Thresh's lantern is that to reliably disengage your ADC outside of most flash-ability/flash-basic combos/ganks from jungle, you have to be far enough away from the fight that you can't use any of your other CC based abilities and/or item actives to lock down their carry or defend yours, and with Thresh's low initial move speed(or if your passive on your mobis has been procced), you have to leave your ADC to the mercy of the enemy support & marksman for a few seconds; alternatively, Thresh's q-w engage combo (Let's say at max range) can be easily avoided by the opposing laners if they know your kit well enough to stay outside of your engage range without wards/ first having vision on your adc/Jungle. I feel like while his lantern CAN set up major plays/escapes in bot lane, most lantern based engages rely on the opposing laners making mistakes (which isn't something i'm comfortable banking on), and most of his disengage potential in lane is somewhat eclipsed by other supports such as nami, janna, or braum who can stay closer to their marksman and provide either stronger shields or healing as well as more reliable disengages(and sometimes multi-target CC). I think his lantern is a much more reliable and useful tool for helping the jg control objectives and re positioning carries before/during/and after team fights during the mid-late game, which Thresh Top would be more than happy to provide.
