Toxic Smurfing in 2018

YABOISETHBROGAN··35 votes·15,711 views

Okay, so, Im new. I came over from SMITE on console, so Im not new to MOBAs, but Im new to the mechanics of League.

Ive been playing about 2 weeks, and hands down the worst part of this game is something that cant really be controlled, smurfs. More importantly, TOXIC smurfs.

I get it. No one wants a noob on your team, you smurf to play against noobs. To have fun, and lets be honest.. because you cant hang with players of your skill, or you were toxic on your main and got banned. Good job btw.

BUT, dont expect me, a guy that mains a cheesy heimer cuz Im just trying to learn the game, to be good. Im lvl 11. I played bots to get a feel. I moved on to PVP, and I know Im not good, yet.

Theres nothing worse than being the guy that rips on actual noobs, because you cant handle your elo on your main account. Its pathetic.

Stop blaming new players, for being new, and trying to learn a game you already know. If you dont wanna play with noobs, dont smurf. Its pretty simple. If you wanna play against noobs, bomb out in ranked. Or fond a new game like league. Dont be toxic, or get banned because you cant handle carrying.

Not saying. Just saying.

I don't mind smurfs or losing to them, but I definitely hate when they start bming. A diamond player SHOULD be shitting on a bunch of silvers. Not sure why they then start calling you "trash" or tell you to uninstall. You then search up the guy on op.gg and he has a 71% win rate. Not fun. Another thing that comes with smurfing are people pretending to smurf. They then think they're so much better, and whenever they make a mistake you point out, they say something like "STFU I dia Yasuo smurf lol bronze" They also use it as an excuse for things like "Gank my lane! We gonna lose if you don't listen to me, because I'm a dia smurf!" Then you look at their op.gg and he has a 40% wr on Yasuo.

Bro if you fucked up my 71% WR I would be mad too.

Like to think that the guy should stay calm as he is trying to 1v5 to save his good WR as his whole team acts like possums spread across the map is insane.

If you're getting that upset about bronze or unranked players not being as good at the game as a diamond player, you really need to walk away from the computer.

I'm not replying to OP.

I'm replying to the person saying "Bro if you fucked up my (as a smurf) 71% WR I would be mad too." This comment:

That's someone getting mad at actual new players not being as good as a smurf.

The expectation of having or keeping a 71% WR in any game with skill-based matchmaking is just ludicrous. The system is specifically set-up to give every player a fighting chance, i.e. a 50% win chance/rate. To think that anything else is possible or deserved is just deluded.

Anyone who knowingly attempts to game the system (or break it), in order to consistently win more (without actually improving in skill) has to deal with the consequences of that. Smurfing is allowed, but it is not supported. People who smurf make their own rules and are therefore responsible for any "problems" that they encounter when smurfing.

So you can be mad at shitty teammates all you want, but if you're smurfing it is entirely your fault.

And regardless of the reason, you're not allowed to flame teammates when you're mad, so your excuse is utterly garbage (excuse my language).

#######Nice troll, though. Good meme.

Lol i had a mid bronze friend that would always smurf around new players and act like he was their gift from god because his mains kept getting banned from raging and flaming his team. He used the old tried and true "i should be at least plat but i keep getting bad teams" excuse.

i too don't mind getting my ass curb stomped in lane by a master tier player with legit no way of fighting back then getting flamed by my team for dying to him so much even though he is literally predicting my every move and reacting to it before i even fucking do then have him reap havoc over my entire team costing me the game and lowering my WR even though he has NO BUSINESS WHATSOEVER being in my division i absolutely love that cant get enough of it i wish i played against more smurfs actually i love being powerless and dropping divisions because someone paid a challenger player to get them out of their elo and then he scares away new players from the game that just an added bonus

Smurfs have always been a problem for every big competitive online multiplayer game.

Smaller communities don't have that problem as often.

Lets say that there are 10k players on one game with 1% of players being smurfs. You have 100 Smurfs.

Take a game with 1M players and they also have 1% of players being smurfs. You have 10000 Smurfs.

The chance of running into a smurf is the same. But the frequency of smurfs vs smurfs is higher in the first scenario than the second scenario once you attribute life factors into it.

Then TOXIC smurfs are another issue as a whole.

Because I smurf, but I don't smurf like an asshole.

I go onto my alt accounts to practice things I am not ready to pull out on my main account. But I am ready to teach and inform people of their mistakes.

Here is the thing. Most people don't want that advice and don't want to improve. They see me as a smurf and assume I am an asshole for smurfing. Thats not the case if I am not pulling out my main champion and am testing the waters with how good/bad I am with new champions.

Smurfs are looked at pretty badly because 90% of smurfs don't bother teaching worse players how to git gud.

I feel your pain. There is a higher ratio of Smurfs:Players in plat than in silver and gold. And a even higher ratio of smurfs in diamond. That goes to 0 at challenger. Because that is the cap of skill, or you can say that the ratio of smurfs to players in challenger is 1:1. Either way. The player is normally as good as the smurf. But up until then, normally not.

YABOISETHBROGAN2 votes

I agree to disagree, smurfs in smite were managable. Its hard to carry on that game if even one guy is feeding. Ive seen two ppl, one being myself feed a mid or bot lane and we still somehow win because of a well fed, last hit darrius or garen, or even an ashe/miss fortune. I dont wanna play with or against smurfs.

I get learning new champs.. but there has to be a better way than me playing bots. I cant learn on bots, bots dont do what players do.

Im very open to direction and am pretty good at staying on top of the log. But i cant imagine the struggle for true moba newbies. Its just bad.

I think if they put a minimum on pvp like lvl 10 or 15, that would force you to play bots, Id bet smurfing would still exist.. but not be as prevalent.

If you wanna learn a new champ, do what i did. Play bots. I played heimer and ashe on bots until i was comfortable. Now i run them in pvp. Its just frustrating I get blamed for being a noob, when Im not the one thats playing below my skill level. Im being thrust into smurfs. Its enough to make people quit. I know ill get better but man. Its a b%!# lol.

Ah I get it. You take no advice from anyone and your outrage at your own bad plays has made you come here to vent.

Your "statement" is going to accomplish nothing good luck getting better. ( oh wait you don't listen to anyone so you won't).

Madsin251 votes

They absolutely tell you what you did wrong. Most baddies literally tell the smurfs " I will play my way you are just toxic."

Most people are just hung up on the word "toxic" like they are going to be able to claim a check if they say it enough times instead of doing self reflection on their own plays.

sardonisms1 votes

I'd love to have people give me advice. That's just not what happens. Instead I get told to delete the game. I'd love to have smurfs like you on my team. I know I'm learning. I know I fuck up. But I can't trust anyone found through matchmaking to tell me what I can do better without cursing or insulting me, because that's what they usually end up doing. Best case they asked why I did something, I say I'm learning, and they proceed to ignore me.

Theorex1 votes

It happens, I know it does. Hell when I am smurfing and I run into another smurf or two. Unless I beat them, they just leave and move on. Most of the time, i check to see if they are elo boosting or if they are the real accounts.

Real accounts normally don't have season 2-3 ranks. Also don't suddenly change mains super rapidly season to season. I report elo boosting. Paying people to do your goal for you, isn't correct morally or ethnically.

I don't report people teaching other people. I'll do it, because its easier to watch someone in real time.

I would just assume they are the assholes who lost in their own ranks and decided to swap over to lower ranks.
or I would also assume that they aren't high elo and don't know your mistakes. Majority of people in plat- diamond are all relying on their mechanics. They don't know what a mistake looks like.

If you want someone that is good at pointing out mistakes and yelling at you.

Give me a full detailed idea as to how you stop smurfing. Please I am all ears.

Do we go the Korea route and force players to give a SSID?

Do we track MAC IPs and say that this computer only gets this account? Then what do you do about siblings sharing a computer?

Do we make people go to an office to register? Good luck getting any game off the ground like that.

Please lets be realistic here. There is one option, and no one in the U.S. / Canada would want to do it. Look at how terrible our Cybersecurity is.

Parents also don't trust kids with their own socials. (That honestly would solve a few problems lmao)

I'm all ears, but this is a dumb thing to say. "This isn't okay! We need to do something about this!"

Riot already forbids Account Sharing, Getting paid to boost someone else via playing with them. What are you going to ask riot to forfeit some of their incoming because Smurfs?

This is exactly like the gun argument.

I am all ears, but please give me a real plan that has a chance of working.

Take guns away from everyone. How do you find every single gun? What are you going to do when they don't find every single gun and someone just goes around killing everyone in a mall because no one has a gun?

We have to be realistic that these things happen.

Some of us Smurf Users use our Smurfs Responsibly and Don't like being clumped up with everyone else. k Thx.

If you're smurfing you're not a responsible player. You can't compete at your level so you feel bad and wanna stomp noobs? There is not one valid legit reason to smurf. Ever. Period.

Theorex1 votes

Play at my level?

I can easily play at my level. Theres a reason why I am there to begin with lmao.

Again, it comes down to picking new things up.

You don't go into a job with brand new equipment "understanding" the basics of it. You need to get a feel for what your new equipment can do, how effective it is. So you test it.

For lower elos its fine for them to go into normals and practice, because normals are around that same level. But for high plat to diamond level players. Telling us to go into normals and test something new out doesn't give us a real feel for how good or bad a champion is, its just we are better than most of the players down there. Its just that simple. Where as if we test something out in a slightly lower elo than our own, its still competitive and still fair. We aren't shitting on everyone because we are still testing out our new equipment.

The fact that you can't see or understand this is very depressing to me.

I could understand that if you were to talk about CS:GO. Literally everything in the game is the same from Silver to Global. You have the same weapon choices etc.

But in league, you can't expect someone to be a god on every single mid laner, adc, support, top, and jungle. Still be diamond. Unless they are making mad money from it or have no life. The best way to practice and be efficient is to be on a smurf and practice, where it is still fair.

If you think I am practicing against bronze or silver players. You are mistaken. I am normally practicing against other Low - High plat players. It is just barely below where I actually am. It also lets me gauge where I actually stand in skill with said champions. I will never be able to determine my skill off of anything below mid plat. There isn't skill there, its just a clown fiesta until one of the teams win.

So yes, I will continue to smurf to practice new things.

You have to want to not do things effectively to not understand this.

Vonyalo1 votes

No one asked you for advices. Its never fun to play against smurfs, you learn nothing from that. And why all other people use their main account to learn new shit and you for some reason have to beat weaker players to practice? I mean what the fck?

Theorex1 votes

Really? The like 10-15% of players that ask me at the end of the game what they did wrong and sit there listening to me type are no ones huh?

There are things that people don't understand and I explain it to them.

If you are getting mad or salty that they are smurfing, join them in their elo and shit on them.

Also, again. Tell me, would you randomly pull out a random champion you've never played before in ranked to test the waters. Or would you go into a lower rank, where you are able to practice. You aren't losing it for your team, but you aren't winning it for your team either.

Going to normals isn't a viable option either. Normals don't offer enough of a competitive feel or a "real" ranked feeling. Its the only way to practice something to the point where you are comfortable on it. I mean why don't you all give shit to Big Streamers, Ex-Pro players, or Pro-Players with smurfs in challenger, masters, diamond, and high plat? Why is it that you want to all of a sudden get super pissed off when other people do it? If the top .1% gets to do it and do it. Why wouldn't I. I know that a few of them also do it to practice new things. Look at Trick2g. He doesn't just play on One Account. He swaps between like 13 accounts because he lets them decay to low-mid plat. Then beats the shit out of all of them. He makes new accounts to prove to his bronze-silver viewers it is possible to climb to diamond from their elos. BUT IF UNKNOWNS DO IT, ITS A CRIME.

Therefore if you like Any of the big streamers, you sir are a hypocrite. On top of that for someone who doesn't play any ranked. How does this affect you whatsoever?

One thing to note here is that a lot of smurfs exist because they got banned on their main account. They aren't really the most normal individuals in the first place, and even the highest of tiers are filled with people like Tarzaned, Hashinshin and Tyler1.

So which of these things (all real things I've been told, either by smurfs or new players who think they're better than smurfs) should I be thanking them for and listening to?

  • Jinx delete the game after this
  • These brainless bitchess [sic] don't know what they're doing
  • Like I'm gonna carry this useless team
  • Riven could you do something for once? (Later) Useless (Later) So bad (This wasn't directed at me, incidentally. I don't Riven.)
  • Report x bot (my premades who are teaching me politely explain I'm new and don't know the champ, and that I don't talk in chat because I'm in Discord with them) nah they're a bot, I've played for years, I know a bot when I see one

Again. Which of these things is this useful advice that new players should be listening to? 'Cause I can tell you I've only been given one actual piece of advice by non-premades. "Janna buy a coin, else you'll be poor." And you know what I did? I bought the coin.

Obviously you should have followed the "git gud" advice you neglected to mention, instantly understanding all the games nuances as soon as those two words were said and unlocking your inner LCS pro. If for some inconceivable reason that failed to work instantly, then flaming you should have acted as a catalyst for the transformation.

How is anyone suppose to learn this game without incantations like "git gud"?

sardonisms1 votes

Oh gosh, THAT'S the problem! No one's ever told me to "git gud!" It all makes sense now.

Don't worry too much about that.

You will run into a lot of people who start to yell in the chat or abandon you in fights and let you die, just because you bought the wrong items, or hit a minion they wanted to hit, or any other stupid thing you might do while still being a noob.

There are just many toxic people on the internet, everywhere. People teaching noobs are very rare. Most people will just laugh at them or make a fool out of them.

Just report them. And mute them ingame, so they don't bother you too much.

The best advice anyone in this community can give you is, quit playing league, while you're still new at it. You might like it at the start but later on you'll just get frustrated over how progressively bad the game is becoming

His Bonnie1 votes

How is the game getting bad? Sure Riot made a few mistakes but they're trying to make it better. Heck I've been getting surveys to rate certain champs which means that Riot does listen to the community. cough Zed cough

IDEMO NA MUDA1 votes

Whenever they "try" making it better the game ends up being even worse. And that's a fact that everyone knows, but some denies to admit. Zed, like every other champion has his ups and downs, and that's the main issue with Riot Games. They have UPS and DOWNS. They have no middle. Take Lee Sin for an example. In season six, and early season 7 he was a fucking beast. Ult that deals 400 damage on level 1 cause you're going him full lethality, great mobility and vision providing via tracker's knife and even before tracker's knife, there was a sightstone he could buy. Look at him now. No ward hops cause tracker's knife AND sightstone has been deleted, ult has been nerfed. He's almost a troll pick nowadays. There are plenty of examples just like this one that says a lot about riot games and their balancing teams.

at the point you get perma banned without a warning for calling someone autistic it kind of becomes a "oh well i will get permad anyways so why give a fuck", ironically enough that attitude actually makes you less likely to be banned as you just start leaving or inting the games where people annoy you rather than "solving it with words".

Teridax681 votes

This might just be me having a tinfoil hat moment, but I've been getting the impression Riot doesn't actually want to discourage smurfing, or otherwise address it decisively, because smurfing is now seen as a means of boosting the game's player count via "new" accounts, as well as generate some manner of older player retention. This is why we apparently have a behind-the-scenes matchmaking algorithm that detects smurfs, but sorts them out with other smurfs instead of trying to tie them to their main accounts. By all means, the game should be trying to discourage smurfing altogether, because it makes the new player experience less friendly, and makes it harder to properly catch toxic players (Riot even has the means to detect and ban players across multiple accounts, as seen with Tyler1), but as it stands we've mostly gotten a lot of ineffectual grumbling on the matter, and little actually done to address smurfs. The problems with the game's current matchmaking and rewards system have only worsened the issue, as for many older players now, smurfing has become an increasingly attractive option when it is seen as the only way to meaningfully progress. There are plenty of options at Riot's disposal if they truly wanted to address the issue of smurfs, bots, or other redundant accounts in the game, but as it stands we've seen no steps taken to address these problems, despite clear awareness of them on the company's side.

Madsin251 votes

Smurfing is not an attractive option. People have to smurf most of the time, wether it is playing with their best friend who is new(these guys better be smurfing or they will ruin games) or they got banned for saying the stupidest of things.

Ask yourself if having to 1v5 through all this power creep is an attractive option. It's really not fun.

His Bonnie1 votes

Well I think Riot isn't totally against smurfing because there's a number of reasons that aren't bad that people do it. It could be to player with a lower elo friend (I've played with some Dia friends, and we got vs Dia's/Masters in normal games) so they would go on their smurfs so it wouldn't happen. It could be to help a friend out in ranked. Not saying that they're boosting, but if someone is Silver 1 in Gold promos then there's nothing wrong with that. And sometimes people like to go on an account that's lower so they can play roles they're not good at, I've noticed newer people/lower elo players tend to not get mad.

Madsin251 votes

Honestly I have learned more from smurfs calling me garbage than me having to think about my own plays.

Smurfs happen in literally every game, and tbfh you should listen to what they have to say you could learn a thing or two.

You turning yourself into some kind of victim is not going to help your gameplay. Even when you get to gold/plat you are going to be fighting smurfs.

LightIsMyPath1 votes

Well, I've tried to learn SMITE and I get flamed every game, it matches me with way more experienced players. I jumped into PVP after some bots game, and tried applying league basic strategies.. and it was a nightmare since I discovered those were wrong there by being shit talked at the whole time by my teammates. For example I saw Change in rotation and since she looks so similar to our Sona I played her support… my Neith wasn't happy at all :/ I find it difficult to aim things with the different camera and I got death wishes for missing my Scylla ult..

Ppl who smurf are -Either stuck at a particular stage in their elo cant get out so decide to play against ppl who are worse then them -banned on main account for being toxic -playing a new champion and decide to feed in lower elo instead of their main -ego boosting -wanting to climb again because they think they maxed out on their main

The only reason I dont completely hate smurfs is the last point because it would get boring and I admit sometimes climbing is exciting, but to be completely honest smurfs ruin the experience for most ppl but themselves.

This right here is why riots ranked is the WORST ever... it's more toxic than a game of Fortnight..

I was gold last year. mid gold. got placed in silver.. I only want to hit gold again, and then NEVER play ranked again this season. This is my attitude.. not "oh I want to play and get better to diamond, plat, etc" but because playing a game in low gold down is like having prison relations without any lube. I get up to silver 1.. and guess what. Riot and their infinite wisdom decides, oh, 3 unranked players on your team against 3 people with high gold MMR is a fair match.. Which in turn, breeds the toxicity because those people are more than likey smurphs.

Now, What riot SHOULD be doing is cracking down more on these toxic smurfs.. I literally had a skarner in one of my games today tell me to kill myself and that he knew what he was doing cause he's a diamond 3 on his main account.. (looked him up, he's plat 1) I really thought riot was supposed to be cracking down on this..

but I guess they just want to promote their clash system instead of dealing with this issue.. after all, these toxic smurfs just create a new account after their main account is banned JUST to get the free and easy wins..

Honestly, i think it has to do with the game not being that fun for quite a while. The only thing that remained fun was getting free wins and have fun stomping. I did create 2 new accounts just to climb and have fun with them, and it there were few games where everyone was really gold or something. There were always other people smurfing. As for the toxicity, the community is toxic as fuck in general, nearing dota 2 levels. It probably has to do with the game getting older, people being veterans and feeling self entitled, better and more experienced than newer players.Thats not exclusive to smurfs though, just an even more toxic combination.

KazaJhodo1 votes

Smurfs ruin the ladder and make the games impossible to balance. Turning game quality to shit. For that reason alone they need to be dealt with.

Make accounts bound to a unique id, such as a phone number- or something similarly as powerful if there is such a thing. Email isn't good enough.

Then you can control bought accounts, everything. Course people can buy fake phone numbers or something, but you could require confirmation or something. More though required there.
