EUW poster (not English-speaking native) about Riven's changes (just opinion)

Riven Wind Slash (R) Minimum damage increased to 100/150/200 from 80/120/160 Maximum damage increased to 300/450/600 from 240/360/480

Hello there! :)

I've found out some weird comentaries about the "buff" to Riven while reading other websites and I'd like to give my point of view.

Firstly, just to keep calm everybody, why is everyone freaking about the buff? I feel like giving a bonus base ad damage on a second ult cast would just be appreciated when you are behind in terms of gold. When you are far ahead it's nonsense to think about it, you are already able to blow squishies and tanks are not really your target (lol).

After explaining that, have you realized the state of the Riven pick? Why would you pick such a champion when there are other less risky options which give more benefits to the team or security to the player?? Yeah, Riven is a rewarding champ, but when behind she falls to be useless. That's what the buff means in my opinion (as said in the first point). Other picks I won't mention can catch up with the enemy toplaner even if they are behind and snowball as much as Riven.

Finally, I totally agree this is not the buff Riven needs. Having the speed nerf on R reverted changed so it's not that slow would be more than enough. That said though, I understand experiments like the passive change tried out in the PBE and I am grateful for having Riot testing new things to balance champions. Is Riven balanced right now? Probably yes, but the other meta toplane champions just laugh at her.

As a warning for those players who think I'm giving a biased opinion just because I am a Riven player, please don't make jokes. I'm trying to be as much realistic as a standart player would be and, in fact, most people who are thrash talking are giving biased opinions by their experience when getting stomped/stomping Rivens. Yeah, their experience is as meaningful as mine, but I think they don't see the nowadays toplane meta. Preseason 6 Riven was strong, but the season 6 Riven is not the same Riven that many people have in mind when discussing.

Revert buff because we don't like favouritism.

What do you mean with favouritism? I'd like you to explain that ^^

51% win rate and 10% play rate champion and this buff.

Buffs are done to change meta, Riot tries to constantly keep LoL alive by balancing or unbalancing (disbalancing?) champs. The more people realize we cannot have a perfectly balanced game the better it'd be.

Nah,this isnt about keeping meta fresh(in that case Rito would buff some underperforming champs). This is just preparation for the championship riven and some flashy LC$$$ plays.

ThePauliton1 votes

Most underperforming champs go straight to the rework section, Riot keeps meta fresh by periodical "balances" that might have no sense for us, such as nerfing and buffing the same champion repetitively.

There is a lot of champs who stand at 47%-48% winrate and are not anywhere near a rework. Why dont buff them, why buff a so called "hard champ" with 50.5% winrate and almost 11% playrate? Trust me she will be pick or ban in plat + after this.

Winrate doesn't mean much, don't trust it as a meaningful piece of information. Yorick must be in positive winrate for mains and has to be reworked. And having less than 50% winrate doesnt make a champion a bad pick. Trust me Riven will not perform different with that buff.

Okey xDDD. Then i'd say I didn't take in consideration old Riven mains who may come back to their main champ lmao

True but you can not buff balanced champion. You can not give big buffs.Riven will be new Irelia.

ThePauliton1 votes

Riot can buff or do whatever he wants. I agree this is not the way to do things, nerfing trinity or trying other things to make the toplane meta champion pool bigger could be nice. And Irelia is a completely different champion. Riven has no tenacity and true damage to be banned as Irelia is imo. Riven won't be a threat in case this buff comes to live.

Nope. It's appreciated all the time, as it allows you to build more defenses and have your damage still relevant. Tank-Riven is a big no-no.

I strongly disagree with the fear of tank Riven. Riven benefits so much of AD items and runes that she'll need buffs on Q base damage to become a tank or at least another Riven playstyle (and there's no way they buff Q). And, by the way, the buff is on an execute, not something you are interested in a tank (dps is a core imo).

Zero Skill Tank1 votes

Executes are very powerful on tanks, that's why few of them possess them, and powerful execution is what keeps tanky Lee and tank Ekko viable. A high-survivability champion has best odds to survive fight long enough to use the execute for it's max effectiveness.

ThePauliton1 votes

Even if that worked that way ( I don't agree with you although i'm not saying you are not right) Riven is more likely not to be played in a tanky way, at least not by people who really have fun playing her :)

Zero Skill Tank1 votes

Even if you or some other Riven players don't do it, because you want to have fun, there will be tons of players who will just ride freelo train. Just like happened(and still happens) with Ekko.

Riven is already build more about penetration and survivability than raw damage(http://champion.gg/champion/riven , almost every common item is penetration, lifesteal or survi ). After this buff ghostcleaver into 4 tank items, or similar are guaranteed to become common.

( I don't agree with you although i'm not saying you are not right)

There is nothing to agree on. Except for Jhin and Jinx all execution champions have a viable tanky build, or used to have it before nerfs. That's a fact.

ThePauliton1 votes

Good point, if that playstyle is good people play it. But, Riven's core was and is damage and surv. She does not benefit from tank items as other pjs do, and more things need to change in order to have a tank Riven.

Edit: Riven already has an ar pen build which provides some tanky stats, but it does not try to follow the non heavy ad route. And we are talking about items. Maybe the new items changes and item 3053 item 3046 should be taken in consideration when talking about tank pjs. Adcs with Sterak is a fact Riot didn't have in mind and should reconsider too.

It is kinda enjoyable to see her getting something finally. I'd say it gives her a better riven mid at least, but I'd much rather see bonus damage to monsters on her passive, allowing her to be an optional jungler. I mean she can, but she struggles through it.

ThePauliton1 votes

Riven jungle has much trouble with the 1st clear, but it would be great fun having her played in the jungle! I personally enjoy more skilled duels on the toplane although new options would be nice
