How does an iron get matched vs plats?

The fuck riot? I know my mmr's high since this is my new acc and i already played before (and i still don't understand why you put all new acc's, even if they won 7/8 placements in iron), but how in bloody hell can you match up against someone 4 divisions higher than you?
