Mages?

So, I liked a lot of the new runes, it makes the game new and it would be more fun if AP control mages or stuff like that had more options I tried playing viktor, orianna, etc and I feel utterly useless no damage, no scaling (even with that late game scaling one) and so, so squishy, I cant do anything against ad assassins, nasus running at me, etc...
I feel like control mages really need a buff or the ad runes need a debuff

The problem is there is very little magic pen, the only way to actually gain magic pen outside of items is to have the rune that gives only 8 magic pen for 3 seconds if you use a mobility spell which most mages dont have

yea that makes sense... void staff is usually 4th or 5th item on mages (unless you're facing 2 tanks or more, or the other team is building a ton of mr) and not every mage builds sorc / liandry's :(

You need to adapt to the game/meta, not the other way around. If you need magic pen to be successful then every mage builds magic pen. If you need void staff third item (which you probably do) then you build it third item.

If you want to have a good chance to win a game you have to build to fit that particular game. This has been good advice for a long while now but it's especially important now that there are wide gaps between current successful play styles.

I've been having the same problem ever since the whole assassin rework, but I kept quiet about this sort of stuff since I thought that Riot would make due balance while keeping other, namely squishy, play styles in mind. But that hasn't happened. And I'm kinda miffed that I can't take my boy Viktor out on the town and have a decent chance of getting ahead and staying ahead with the presence of lethality and the near constant one-shot capacity once the assassin gets their hands on one of them. And all I keep hearing is "Build Zhonya's". It's honestly quite reasonable, but I hate the item in general. The stats are not very appealing to me and I hate the Stasis active, since there have been too many times that it has become a death sentence.

Build tabi.

It feels like putting square tires on your truck but more often than not having tabi vs lethality will be the difference between you getting away with a sliver of health and getting a grey screen time out.

I personally think that Zhonya's has become even more of a niche item in this pre-season. Just having the stasis survivability alone usually isn't very beneficial. It's only if it makes the difference in the outcome of a fight when it has real value. Four times out of five I feel that right now if you watch your replays you'll probably decide that having different positioning and some extra move speed would probably have served you better than hourglass.

That said, also in the category of feelsbadman, building armguards and never finishing hourglass is also likely to get you quite a bit of mileage vs the burst ADs however it certainly ranks lower on the fun-o-meter.

Personally when I feel frustrated I am rather fond of taking Predator on Malz or Annie with celerity, windwalking and TP. Get boots first item before you hit 6, then time your level 6 with a hard push and come flying out of river top or bot lane like a scene from The Frighteners.

Rinse, repeat and if by the third time they aren't tilted so hard their grandchildren will be walking in circles you can always toss an innocent 'no mia?' in /all and just sit back and chill for the ff.

I think you're actually looking at this backwards. Trying to be a burst damage mage carry right now is pretty pointless if you're paired against equal skilled opponents. Control mages are actually HIGHLY effective in the current meta it's just that if you're playing a control mage your role isn't to get all of the kills it's to feed your AD teammates.

Try taking Annie, Lux, Zyra, Malz, etc and roam early, then position yourself like a support in team fights and CC the first person that gets close to your back line. The most difficult part of doing this though is getting a team that is willing to disengage and/or kite and not just all in until everyone on both sides is dead every single fight.

If you want the K/D glory then you'll need to switch to assassin or ADC until the meta changes.
