Making Elemental Dragons less random and increasing the game strategy- Both at once!

Hey, there. Currently I am not very satisfied with the randomness of Elementals Dragons and I've heard many people say the same. I think it doesn't goes well with the fairness and strategic aims of the game. Some matches will get very unbalanced because a team had the luck to get 4 fire dragons, and in another match you'll only get faster from base (not that it's bad) because of the luck of getting 4 wind dragons. Therefore, I was thinking of ways of making the game less random and also more strategic, and was hoping to get some feedback from the community on my idea.

First Dragon Buff, based on the first blood kill... If you kill the rival's:

AD--> Infernal: By far the most desired buff, and (supposedly) the most protected role. To have this buff on this role might motivate risky plays to get that AD first. Top/Mid--> Ocean: if you want to dominate these 1v1 lanes then you'll have to risk to get that first blood (and secure the dragon later, of course). Since the buffs mostly empower this lane roles, I think it would be a good "reward" to have the chance to increase your dominance further once you get that sweet first blood. **Jungle-->Mountain: **if you manage to invade successfully your jungle rival you'll earn the chance to dominate your own jungle... I think it's a good reward. Support--> Cloud: let's be honest, we really want to get that AD before that Support but getting the later one ain't bad either. Similarly, we would better get that Infernal buff rather than the cloud one but the latter ain't that bad either. I think that having a "better" buff on the AD would motivate strategies that will try to get it first, yet this will come with its own risk... If you prefer to secure the kill on the support you will still get (the opportunity) to get a nice windy buff.

Lore: the river takes the blood of the champion to the lonely dragon, which calms his thirst and fuses part of the champion's soul with his breathe.

What happens if the dragon is killed first? If the the Dragon is killed before the first blood it will not "evolve" into an elemental dragon, and will only give money instead just as the dragon used to give (let's say 80-100 gold to every team member... Or whatever you feel would be fair... However, I'd recommend to have a bounty that motivates the buffs rather than mere money).

OK... We got the first blood, what's next? Well I have two ideas:

  1. After the dragon spawns, the next champion kill determines the dragon buff.
  2. After the dragon is killed, the next champion kill determines the dragon buff.

Let me know what you think of this idea! Would you prefer option 1 or 2 after the first blood? Do you have another idea? Or, maybe, are you satisfied with the current random mechanic for the Dragon?

You realize they can't actually determine what role dies first?

And certain kinds of RNG, such as the dragon spawns, are fine for the game and increase strategic decisions.

I agree that maybe right now the system cannot determine it. But maybe they can make use of the previous Team Builder system that used to let you pick up a role? Also, can't they design something from the current dynamic queue?

The current draft system lets you pick roles -- that's not the problem. The problem is that 1. People move all over the map, 2. Off meta playing.

Concerning people moving around the map, the Elemental Dragon's spawn would be based on the champion killed, not the lane of the kill. Regarding the meta, it is always changing, this Elemental Dragon system is a clear example; thus I don't think the current-meta should constrain future changes.

Maybe it will turn out tedious to always have to "decide" who to kill to fix the dragon buff. Yet, what do you think of this proposal for the first dragon buff? Don't you think it might help with the strategic aims of the game?

I like the idea of having some control over what dragon spawns. If you get First Blood, you should be able to choose what dragon spawns next. If you get Rift Herald, you should be able to pick the upcoming dragon. These changes would encourage more action and contesting of objectives.

I agree! I think that they can use the new Dragon Buff System to encourage more action. : )
