Lane Trading, Champion Damage, and phases

I have been playing on and off for about 2 seasons, just finally started to do ranked. I am having some issues though and was looking for some suggestions. I trade okay and I am fairly safe in lane but my overall damage to champions (end game stat) is very low. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I have watched multiple streams on playing top lane and it seems some can get very bursty, but I just cant seem to get those kind of numbers. Also, my mid and late game are lacking a bit I understand my role once in a team fight but Im unsure when I should leave laning phase and start to roam/set up fights. Any suggestions/information would be appreciated.

Soooooo much more context is needed.

Do you play carries? If an when you kill somebody, do you continue farming or do you immediately run to another lane and try to snowball another fight there? Is your playstyle Burst or DPS based and do you take any and all opportunities to fight?

It's very easy to get the most damage on either team even as a full tank champion as long as you play super hyper aggro. If you're just playing "safe" or even "normal" on a relatively low damage champion, of course your damage stat isn't going to be very high.

After a kill I usually try and push lane to take tower. As far as DPS or Burst, I guess burst I only try to all in when absolutely necessary in lane or when doing team fights. I have been playing Yorick and Vlad top. Ive tried other lanes Im good sup, cant jungle to save my life always get way behind, mid I will usually play Heimerdinger.

I think your second paragraph sums it up though, I need to learn to be more aggressive.

ADCs do most harass with autos.

Mages harass with abilities and farm with autos.

Tanks use autos and abilities because they have insane sustain and damage.

Bruisers just get royally fucked because Riot doesnt know how to make a proper balanced game.

Assassins farm until they get some type of lead, like a level lead, then they go in for a burst.
