Is it really so hard to go into Ranked with champs you're experienced with?

Samuloo··33 votes·3,312 views

Don't queue up for roles with champs you've never touched.

If you want to learn, do it in bots and Normal Draft.

I don't need inexperienced players in my games, god forbid in a carry position I have to Support.

I don't want to get stuck with someone I can't help even with Morgana

Blame Rito for getting rid of Team Builder for no damn reason.

There was reason, and they told us that reason. Reason was that there were hours long queus due to lack of supports in queue. People constantly complained about it.

I was perfectly fine with waiting. Not a valid excuse.

umm, what? Only Riot said that people complained about the matchmaking process for it. The boards were clean. The most common complaint that I can remember was that players were jumping out of the match because it wasn't full immediately or that they didn't like the champions picked.

Supports weren't the most common role, but meta-happy lobby-kickers, leavers and various other toxic behaviors were extremely common

most matches took under FIVE MINUTES to make and were very well organized as a result

Something that would have probably been better was if they used half of the current system with the old team-builder system and made it where you just queued for a position. Queue times were longer because people were queued with obscure picks like mage top or jungle, fighter top, etc

people didn't know what roles to have in their team so everything was a chance

Yeah, although it would have been nice if the new system just had role preference instead of trying to always match you to your role. I know people want their roles all the time, but now everyone ONLY knows their one role. I think people were better players when you had to at least play everything sometimes, instead of trolling once or twice a season when autofilled to support.

That's one of the things I always thought would be nice to actually have on profiles and visible somewhere in game as well. An icon for every lane, and then those icons would appear either in champ select or on your summoner profile stating your top 3 preferred roles.

Not that the new system isn't nice for getting your role, but it's far from perfect because multiple roles are so over or under utilized. For example, I like Jungle, Mid, and Support in that order. If I que jg and mid (I can't que the third role) I get jg essentially every time because mid is so popular. If I que support and anything I'm going to get support 90% of the time for the same reason.

Just make it so you have to be m5 with 3 chars in each of the 2 spots you 'want'.

Why? I dont have mastery 4 with half of champions that i play. What about smurf accounts? Ranked already have enough restrictions. 30 lvl and 20 champions. If i buy champion with RP or BE, i should be allowed to play it in any mode i want to.

Admit? Im writing from smurf account. And i have 4 more smurf accounts. Why?

Zoldren1 votes

Because part of the problem is people not knowing their champions in ranked games that's why. Smurf on non ranked have fun. Level 30 doesn't mean you know the champs you play, just that you play a lot. 20 champs, same thing. Mastery is a baseline way of gauging at least you have played the champions and have some basic understanding of how they work, and should be able to play them in ranked. If you can play smurfs in ranked or "any mode you want", then I should be able to play ranked with the expectation my team isn't trolling me or "first time" playing a char/position. Because frankly I'm tired of working my way up, to be troll demoted because people don't know their champs/positions... let alone purposely losing. And if they implement, and if you want to play a smurf account where assuming you are a 'god' on your other account, but still want to troll, then find a way to link your accounts so you can still troll, because that's all smurfs are, trolls.

The mastery system isn't well set up to do this or even a reliable method for it. Especially for newer players who by nature do NOT have mastery with the champion and aren't likely to get it until they've played a significant number of games. The mastery system also doesn't actually show mastery, only that you played enough games to get a high score a couple times and enough blue essence for the unlocks.

It slows their progression and gates the game behind a mastery wall. Whether or not that's worth it is debatable for the limited amount of good it would do.

Steelflame1 votes

The point of M5 is that it doesn't take S's or anything. Just playing the champ a fair amount. And as a new player, you probably should play a lot before you look at ranked. Unless you want to end up in some Bronze 5 hellhole for the next 2 seasons...

About the only thing I'd say is that Mastery ranks should take less overall time to gain the more total mastery ranks you have. Even if just every 1 mastery point was +1% mastery gain, for people who play a lot of champs it would add up to help boost your getting mastery on a select few champs pretty quick (Just 1 game as every champ is +140% mastery gain. If you somehow got M7 on everyone currently it would be +980% mastery per game for the next new champ). Because the more you play the game, the better you get overall, even if the difference is only minor. Someone who has mastered 40-50 champs can probably pick up another rather quickly, while someone who is already struggling on 5-6 champs would struggle on the 7th one too.

And as a further point, while higher tiers of mastery should only be available if you own the champ, I do think you should be able to at least trigger the start of Mastery 2 on even free week champs. This gives new players a way to help build up mastery rank early to enable further build up later on, and can be stated as now that you have played the champ, you have a more basic understanding of the champ's kit that you may not get from just seeing them in action (For instance. You probably might not realize Ekko has to place his W several seconds ahead of time, and just see the circle and subsequent stun really quick), which has increased your overall understanding of the game.

A mode where you try to climb with the best of your abilities to prove you deserve to be where you are at...

And then I see all the people going "lol winning is not as important as having fun"

If winning isn't a priority, go play in a mode where winning and losing don't matter... Norms and bots.

"But people don't try as hard in non-ranked games!"

#BUT YOU DON'T FUCKING CARE ABOUT WINNING AS LONG AS PEOPLE HAVE FUN

#SO YOU SHOULDN'T CARE IF PEOPLE TRY HARD AS LONG AS THEY HAVE "FUN"

To gain experience with the champion, thats perfectly fine.

But theres also a difference between norms and rank and while I do agree that everyone should play some norms/bot witht he champion before entering rank, his first rank game with the champion will most likely feel clunky.

Theres a first time for everything.

Honestly what scares me more is when i get a guy who has a 30-60 games played on a champion and has a 35% winrate on it and you just die a little inside.

But mentality of people isnt same. They wouldnt try as hard. Also matchmaking is different. When i queue normal draft i sometimes play against diamonds/challengers/masters and sometimes against bronze/silvers. How can you learn champion if u play it against people that dont even try?

SO purpose of playing normal would be to learn how to press 4 buttons? You can do that once in practice tool and then go straight to ranked right?

If you want to be a nitpicky douchebag grasping at straws sure.

Or maybe you can be someone with a working brain and put together that going into a competitive mode with inexperience when there are so many tools available to learn outside of it is MAYBE a dick move?

What about going in ranked with champion i have 30% winrate with 100 games. Is it also a dick move? I would be experienced on it but would have 70% chance to lose.

MakishiEFB13 votes

Seeing as 30% win rate in 100 games means you suck dick at it...

Yeah that's a pretty bad move too and shows you clearly aren't experienced with them.

Steelflame1 votes

It would also be a display in your own stupidity in thinking bringing a champion you have a 30% win rate with into ranked is a good idea. Although it would tank your elo fast enough that you'd probably end up getting to a point where even then you could get them to 50% win rate...

No, because the allure of increasing your rank leads to more pressure on yourself and your opponents, leading to gameplay that ends up being significantly better for practice.

No, because the allure of increasing your rank leads to more pressure on yourself and your opponents, leading to gameplay that ends up being significantly better for practice.

Doing that would also make you a selfish d-bag for using your ranked team as a practice tool, not giving a damn about the fact that they seriously intend to win and climb. You arent serious about winning when you play your first game as kai sa ranked. In fact, you'll be stomped so hard for doing that, the higher your elo gets, that your behavior can only be classified as being extremely abusive and griefing your team.

People like you are the reason they need to put hardcoded limits on playing certain champions in ranked.

I don’t first time Champs in ranked, but I believe that ranked is the best place for practice, as there’s only so much you can learn in norms against people who dgaf.

Logical fallacy, changing the subject.

The subject of this thread was people who play ranked with champions they've never played before.

The subject of this thread was never about people who understand how a champion works, have practiced with it, feel comfortable being competitive with it, but still have room to improve with it.

Your statement is a contradiction.

Either you want to have fun goofing off and doing whatever, or you want a competitive game.

It's selfish for you to demand all the other players be at their best and be competitive, by joining a ranked game, while you are goofing off on some champion you've never played before with a build you don't have a clue about trying some new strategy you don't know has ever worked or will ever work.

You take that crap to normals. you come to ranked when YOU are ready to be competitive.

Why does fun and competitive have to be mutually exclusive? There are well over a million ranked players and maybe 300 professional. Unless you are at a master level, whats the point of playing if not for fun?

Bots are too easy. Normals draft is more toxic than ranked....and there is no way to measure improvement unless you play ranked.

Competitive does not mean you can't have fun AND play to win. 80% of ranked players are better than me and I hope that next month 79% are better than me.

Ranked is a measuring stick for improvement. Nothing else.

Risen291 votes

Why does fun and competitive have to be mutually exclusive?

Depends on how you define fun. Competition can itself be fun.

But some here define fun as "doing whatever you want and not caring about winning more".

By definition, you're no longer playing competitively if you arent playing with the intent of winning more.

When you go kai sa ranked on the day of it's release without any practice in normals you either don't care about losing or are too stupid to realize why that's bad for your winrate. But unless you're in bronze you should know better. In which case you just dont care. As many here have admitted they dont.

Not exactly hard.

No, but it teaches you the basics. It also allows you to play in an environment more conducive to learning things that Bronze players stuck in Elo Hell are unable to do, like CS, jungling pathing, and what not. Whereas, in real life gameplay, everyone's grandmothers are flaming you for missing 1 CS. How you gonna learn when you are worrying about many things at once?

Ranked experience becomes meaningless when you don't even know left from right on the first time champion you are queuing the match in. Focus on learning the basics and you'll see a better learning curve than when you are jumping into the fray with multiple issues to address.

Ripikou1 votes

As much as it sucks, ranked is also for practice. The only difference is they will put a label on you for playing ranked as opposed to norms. AS long as they are trying to win the only thing you can do is accept a guy not playing someone he's played before is the same rank as you.

Risen294 votes

Wrong. Ranked has one purpose for existing: to climb the ladder. That by the very definition of its name is why you play it.

If you are not playing ranked in a way that lines up with the purpose of ranked then you are abusing your teammates who are there for rank's intended purpose.

This.

There should be some method of punishment for people who play ranked uncompetitively. People who queue up and play like ass because they can't be bothered to properly choose which queue they should be joining are the worst. There is a reason Blind Pick and Normal Draft exist and it directly contributes to toxicity in the community when those modes are ignored because some people are ignorant.

Ripikou1 votes

Exactly, Unless you're a god and start in your final form, you are going to improve as you go. You can be butthurt and down vote as you want but that doesn't change anything. There is no written rule saying you have to know everything about anything. Also, You CAN'T practice in normals, because "its just normals". You'll never find a match that would realistically help you. You CAN however go into ranked and get placed where you belong and improve from there. "Unless you're plat+ you shouldn't be going to ranked because you hinder your team". Is the logic you want to go with. Silvers are Silver, Bronze are Bronze, Gold are gold etc... If you are there with someone like that, you should probably be there with them in the future.

Percentages1 votes

You are very wrong there, bronzes play with silvers and golds and silvers play with golds and plats and vice versa all the way upwards...

Ripikou1 votes

Bronze are STILL bronze, Silver are STILL Silver, gold are STILL Gold. You can put them up against the best or worst league player, The ranking they're in is still the rank they are in. If they are playing with people who are playing things for the first time, then I mean you're keeping up in LP with someone who is doing shit for the first time. It's like you people can't grasp a concept or just refuse to even though its right in front of you.
