I do not think Garen's Juggernaut update made him better in any way.

Garen’s an interesting champion to work on. He’s League’s preeminent “spin to win” champion, but doesn’t really bring enough uniqueness to the games he’s in. What’s more, when late game comes around, the Might of Demacia turns into the Meek of Demacia and falls off so hard he doesn’t do much other than occasionally tell people - very loudly - where he’s from. We wanted to balance Garen out a little, so we tinkered with his power curve to make him weaker early but stronger come late game, and then added a fancy new passive to the big man’s ult.

So now he can't even win lane because he was supposed to be the guy that shut down casters but since he's weaker now, he can't even fight properly because he's now going to be outtraded. I understand the silence is scary, it stops people from using skills. But let's be realistic, anyone can see it coming from a mile away and can counteract with extreme prejudice. Seriously, think of a typical toplaner and just think for a second how they counter (Q)Decisive strike with their own abilities because I know you were thinking about that skill but not wanting to touch it when you changed Garen(correct me if I'm wrong). Let's not forget that Garen LOSES an ability (Perserverance) when he fights a champion. Fighting is super important because it means he has to stay relevant enough to not fall off. He has to farm up his stats for (W)Courage. He needs to not let the enemy out scale him (Because they still can and DO) or else he will be unable to function as a 5th member.

He falls off because people kill him faster than he spins. Or they just don't fight at all. Sure they scale harder with every level but let's be clear. Garen getting the full judgment is extremely difficult and only possible from mistakes or setting up a play (which he can't do himself Or with Flash) with the help of fellow champions.

R: Demacian Justice [NEW] Passive: Garen identifies the enemy champion with the most recent kills as the enemy team’s Villain. Judgment ticks and basic attacks on the Villain deal an additional 1% of their max Health as true damage. Active: Garen calls upon the might of Demacia to deal a finishing blow to a targeted enemy. The more health they’re missing, the more damage Demacian Justice will deal. [NEW] Demacian Justice deals true damage to the enemy team’s Villain.

Now Garen has an active and unique role in every game: to destroy any foe, regardless of how tanky they are, so long as they’ve recently killed one of his friends (champions on his team). This isn’t just cool in design terms, it’s also super fitting to his character’s fantasy: now Garen’s a protector of the weak both in and out of game, and has a kit that directly opposes Darius’. This isn’t a static rivalry either - Villainy will adapt as the game progresses, changing Garen’s target as his enemies rise to - and fall from - power.

And do you see this scenario of yours working out at all? I don't. Let me break it down.

Now Garen has an active and unique role in every game: to destroy any foe, regardless of how tanky they are, so long as they’ve recently killed one of his friends (champions on his team)

No everyone still and will Always focus the carries. Because Garen does not "Destroy" any foe no matter how tanky they are because that's wasting time. So a support gets a kill, now he's PRIORITY NUMERO JUAN?? Please no. And why can't he just decide who needs to be killed. There are multiple factors that contribute to a high-value target. Can you agree with me on that? It's not only about kills and Gold. What about the tank who soaks so much damage and constantly harasses your team? What about the mage who kits hard and prevents escapes with they utility? What about the Carry? The guy killing your team?

And if you're fighting a lone villain? Doesn't work because they're not always a priority. If you could maybe choose whose a threat because a splitpushing Nasus is a threat to your towers right? OR maybe that pesky Warwick sneaking around your mid lane trying to shut down your midlaner. Or maybe the guy hitting you in top lane because THEY'RE YOUR FREAKING ENEMY. WHOEVER IS HURTING YOU IS YOUR ENEMY. ENEMIES ARE VILLAINS. So why can't you treat them as such?

This isn’t just cool in design terms, it’s also super fitting to his character’s fantasy: now Garen’s a protector of the weak both in and out of game, and has a kit that directly opposes Darius’.

THAT IS WRONG. Protectors are these guys Galio Shen Braum Thresh. Garen doesn't do jack for his team. By that logic, Graves is a Protector because he has one CC ability and also kills champions a little bit faster.

And also, "Opposes Darius"? All my Wat. For a kit that opposes Darius, he sure gets his ass kicked by it totally. Here's the list.

  • Better Execution
  • Better Crowd Control
  • Better Skill Synergy
  • Absolutely destroys Garen in 1v1 scenario
  • More useful to his team
  • ** DOESN'T LOSE HIS PASSIVE WHEN FIGHTING ENEMY CHAMPIONS**

I think what you were going for was that Lore shabang and how they're from opposing sides and Darius is the bad guy and Garen is the good guy. But I don't think Garen should be limited because lore says that he has to fight Darius.

This isn’t a static rivalry either - Villainy will adapt as the game progresses, changing Garen’s target as his enemies rise to - and fall from - power.

And that's the issue. Why does the game have to determine who rises and falls from power? The player is intelligent enough to figure that on their own AND this is because they can factor in different things like what the threats are too, not just for champions.

And look, it's got it's uses. If there's a champion who is seriously crushing people, Garen can offset that with this mechanic. But it's not available enough nor does it feel good to use because half the time you're not even using it how it should be used. But here's the deal Garen has inherent issues in his kit and adding a damage boost with too many complicated conditions does not help that.

Are you afraid that they're going to use it to crush one guy to death and flat out be oppressive? Remove it then. Either make it strongly reliable like giving us a choice, or just don't have it at all. I'd rather have a champion that's underpowered but has budget space for improvements than a champion that's overloaded but with gimmicky mechanics.
