Is Ryze crowding out Singed?

In my last ranked game, I opted to play Singed while someone on my team recommended Ryze. We lost, due to poor teamfighting on our part, by the way.

But anyway, why would you pick Singed over Ryze? They both have the same niche, being a tanky AP top who works really efficiently with mana items and does significant damage over time, but I can't think of many reasons to pick Singed over Ryze. Ryze has a MUCH stronger lane phase, seeing as how he is ranged, his damage output is better at all stages of the game (Singed's MIGHT be higher, maybe, if he goes rylais/liandries and is hitting all 5 members of the enemy team in a teamfight, but then, you could make the argument about Ryze's ult doing aoe damage too, right?), but Ryze's damage is likely to be more important because he can use his to eliminate the enemy ADC on his own, while Singed is too busy being shut down by a Banshee's Veil. Both are really tanky late game too, Singed is obviously tankier, but it might be closer than you think in terms of survivability due to the Spellvamp from Ryze's ultimate and his ability to kite.

At first I thought Singed has better CC than Ryze, but I think it might even be closer than you would think. His Mega Adhesive is potentially useless if placement is whiffed, or the fight changes location, and while Fling is godlike, it's extremely hard countered by spellshields, a problem which Ryze doesn't have. In addition, Fling is melee, on a champion with no gap closers, so it's pretty likely for Singed to just get knocked back before he gets to use it. Meanwhile Ryze's is an instant lock-on snare at range.

So tell me, why pick Singed over Ryze?

Singed and Ryze don't really fulfill the same niche aside from providing magic damage in the top lane.

Ryze is a strong early bully against melee champions who transitions into a durable, sustained damage mage. He excels in team fighting and taking objectives with his team later in the game due to his durability and damage.

Singed has a weak laning phase but develops into a tank who is difficult to chase or lock down later in the game. He excels at split-pushing because he can be hard to catch/kill and can kill minions without effort. During teamfights, his role is to absorb damage for his team and disrupt the enemy while providing moderate AoE damage and slows.

The main reason Singed isn't really seen much at the moment is probably due to the prevalence of ranged top laners who can abuse his weak early game and the changed made to reduce the effectiveness of proxy Singed (changes to gold value on death).

I don't find Singed particularly hard to lock down after they removed his ultimate's Tenacity. I also don't find Ryze's ability to take towers as impressive in the slightest(unless by objectives you meant dragon, and...well, dragon).

By objectives, I was primarily referring to Baron and Dragon because of his sustained damage helping to take the monsters, his root helping his team catch people trying to strong it, and the strength of his AoE damage in crowded areas like Baron and Dragon pit.

Even without the tenacity on Singed's ultimate, he is still very durable, has a constant slow after Rylai's Crystal Scepter is built, movement speed and resistances from his ultimate, fling to create distance, an AoE slow from W, and a defensive build. Even if people can lock him down for a few seconds, he can usually survive and then escape afterwards.

It's not just Singed, Ryze has been crowding out other top champions as well.

Ryze requires stacking items is the only thing. He starts out weaker (though he is ranged) but scales quickly due to how much he spams. Singed has wave clear, builds tankier, and isn't AS dependent on stacking items (I mean, sure, RoA is a thing for him and all, but it isn't all but necessary). Also, if Singed wants to escape, he will. And anyone who tries to stop him is going to be hurting quite a bit before all is said and done.

That being said, yes. Ryze is amazing.
