A solution to losing lp in ranked matches due to afkers

One of the most frustrating things to deal with in League of Legends, not only in ranked but in all formats, is being forced to sit through twenty plus minutes of a match with an afk player (on either side). After five years, you would think there would have been some kind of solution to this problem, but the most popular solution offered is giving loss prevented in ranked matches to keep players from losing lp. While the loss prevention idea seems logical to a degree, it is often stated that it would be easily exploitable.

Focusing mainly on ranked matches, and only those games where someone just never connects at all, a significant number of games could be saved from being frustrating for players on either or both teams with the following system.

If a player fails to connect, they should be removed from the game in after a short period of time. Once the player is removed, players who are in the queue should be given the choice to join an ongoing game. Once a player accepts the position, they are loaded into the match and leveled up to the average level of all players in the match and given an amount of gold equal to an average of all players in the match as well. This would save many games from being throw away games, and the player base as a whole a lot of frustration.

If the system were quick enough, the team with the afk player could set the lanes to hold on until the new player made it into the game. As well, the player joining the game could be given an idea as to which other champions are on their team so that they can pick a champion to fill the missing role if they choose to do so.

Since joining an ongoing game would put the players at a disadvantage, players who agree to go into the match could be given an incentive of some kind, such as an ip bonus, or full lp for a victory, and only a percentage of lp lost if they lose.

The technology for this suggestion already exists in the game, since ARAM and Dominion start players out with an alternative level and amount of gold.

Even if this solution doesn't quite fit, something should definitely be done about afks who never load in. They're the easiest afks to spot and fixing even just games where these afks appear would drastically improve the overall player experience.

Loss prevention wouldn't be exploitable if done properly... Just have the AFK lose double LP, while the rest of his team gets Loss Prevented. BAM, fixed.

My personal thought, is to have afk'ers/leavers automatically lose double LP for leaving whether their team wins or not, then give the players that stay the option to "opt out" of playing that game.

This way you could choose to stick it out, and possibly pull out a win (for increased LP for it being a 4v5), or leave without repercussion due to the 4v5.

Just my opinion... but I think it'd work pretty well.

if they were in a duo queue, make both players lose LP

While I disagree about the loss prevention as a viable solution (one major reason being that the game would still be a throw away game, which is time lost and part of why afks are so frustrating), having a stricter punishment for the afk player would be a step int he right direction.

This solution is focused on fixing the problem of afks who simply never connect though, and attempting to salvage the game without costing a lot of time and frustration to the players who are left short 20+ minutes and a ruined match.

The opt out idea is intriguing and could work if structured properly for leavers as a whole, but unless the punishment for leaving was incredibly strict there would be potential for a lot of matyrs leaving games 'for the team'. It likely wouldn't happen often enough to have a huge impact, but it could cause a whole new issue altogether. I do like the idea of opting out of throw away games though.

  1. Support quits.
  2. ???
  3. Free xp/gold for replacement.

This solution is focused on solving the leavers from the start of the game issue, not leavers in general, so the above solution would see a lot of Zeds fighting with Caitlyn for cs in bottom pre-6 ;D
