Katarina: Why?

I'm writing from mobile, so please excuse any typing errors.

I've been looking at the proposed Kat changes, and I overwhelmingly find myself asking, why?

I understand wanting to add complexity to a champion, but I really feel that all that's been accomplished here is to give an incredible amount of counterplay against a champion that already struggled against opponents with half a brain cell.

Any enemy worth their salt will continue to deny Katarina farm early, and now she doesn't even have her Q, since using it to CS will negate such a huge portion of her potential damage, the enemy would simply capitalize on this to press their harass even further.

Having the Q dagger land behind the primary target means that the enemy will simply strafe to one side or the other, and even if they go in to full retreat and you "zone" them for four seconds, upon coming back, they now have a huge potential damage advantage.

I'm curious why anyone would play Kat now as long as Zed is in the game - an assassin who can poke, has an AoE flourish and a pile of "free movement" without even needing a ward, let alone specific positioning of two separate abilities. And who, now, gains a Veigar-like AD buff.

I played against a friend. With the amount of mobility I had I was dodging basically everything. You can juke a lot more effectively now. I find the new Katarina very fun but she is more difficult. Old Katarina had one counterplay, CC. Now Katarina can use her extreme mobility (usually getting three shunpos in a lane fight) To avoid any skill shot CC. People like annie will still rip her face off but that's really nothing new.

New Kat also does a lot of dmg if played around those daggers. Your laning damage is significantly increased.

That's great, but I'm not concerned with old vs new; I'm wondering why, with such a dramatic nerf to her immediate usefulness - that is, getting into a fight a front-loading her damage, versus needing to "set up" zones with her daggers - why anyone would ever pick this over a champion like Zed, who doesn't need to do any of that while retaining all the free mobility (free escapes) that they complained about on Kat.

Except that you can Q, E to the dagger, then E back to a minion. Or just drop W by the melee minions and you do dagger + E dmg to both melee and caster minions.
