Champion Resources (for Newbie)

Hey Guys,

I just have one question really: is there a generally-trusted and reputable tierlist for all the champions in the game? I'm new, and ~130 champions is quite a lot to process: so I guess I want to look at the better ones in the meta first. Otherwise, is there any resource (preferably some sort of video, not a novel :P) which sums up all champions briefly and well? Maybe even within the context of the current meta?

Thanks, -DJShafman

There is not an accurate tier list for any game. Furthermore people will just tell you the best are FoTM characters like Ryze. (Ryze was very rare, then a pro player pulled some move with him, now even though he is the same strength as before he's about 30 times as much played.)

Basically just don't play Nunu Teemo

Not really to no.

The problem is that a lot of League is highly contextual. For an extreme example, let's say there's a champion with a 100% win rate in Pro Play. Broken right? What if I told you that champion was picked once against another champion that he hard counters? A lot of sites do well to explain as much context as they can and others, well, don't, but that's really it. You'll never get enough context to apply to what you want in the way you're asking for.

With that in mind, as a new player, I BEG you to consider improving yourself as a player before hardcore focusing on any given champion. Learn to get high amounts of CS on virtually any champion, learn how to A Click and Orbwalk properly, learn the basics about animation canceling, learn the mechanical differences between fighting a duel and fighting a team fight, and most importantly of all you need to work on your macro gameplay.

It doesn't matter who you main if you yourself suck at the game. That is a fact, context and all.

Obviously, I can't buy every champ in the game due to limited IP. And with the diverse roster in the game (and abilities they have) playing someone like yasuo would be vastly different to playing someone like teemo (to give two examples that, from what I gathered kind of teach you bad habits). That is why I posted the question, to help me decide which champions to buy first - with the primary aim to improve all those mechanical skills mentioned. I come from another moba (HotS) so I know some basics such as stutter-stepping and timing a skill shot, but obviously there's a lot more to this game which I want to explore - and I want to do so without learning bad habits!

Ahh, okay. In that case you'll mostly want to pick up a Jungler and focus on your macro gameplay first. Something simple-ish like Warwick or Master Yi. Once you understand those two, some of the bigger mechanics in the game immediately fall in place. After that, just find a champion you like and figure that out now that you have macro gameplay under your belt.
