Old Champion Name Availability

bandage··28 votes·4,459 views

@Development Team Hey everyone!

I recently talked with a Rioter over live chat (if you didn't know about this it's amazing) about taking old champion names. Newer champions such as Xayah, Rakan, Ornn, Ivern and some others have been able to be taken as an IGN on/before release. I was trying to take the name "Poppy" but was told that it was unavailable :(

Basically, **my idea is to see if people would like to approve being able to take old champion names! **And to help me get the name Poppy! Poppy Any upvotes/comments help to get this seen by Rioters and the dev team, and hopefully they'll respond in this thread!

Click here to see that a Rioter even approved of my idea in chat! Thanks Agent 007! [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

Gotta upvote this. What will I ever do if I finally run into a Red offended by my name? :(

Poppy is unavailable because someone already has that name, not because it's an old champion name.

If the player is inactive for long enough, then it'll become available that way. https://support.riotgames.com/hc/en-us/articles/201751914-Summoner-Name-Clean-Up-

edit: Hum, news to me that they arbitrarily locked up those names manually. Even if they made those accounts themselves early on, I feel like they ought to have allowed the name clean up thing still kick in. If it is one of those manually locked names, then I don't see why they should keep them that way.

That's entirely false. If you look up every old champion, you'll see that they're set at Level 6 with no match history prior. Riot has intentionally done this in the past, and I have been playing since Season 2 to know this.

I was just going to say that

Sure dude, though I personally much prefer adding stuff to them like my current name or Dark Yasuo, Demon Talon, etc.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I do agree that there could be some confusion toward newer players, but I feel as if it wouldn't make the most egregious difference. After all, you should know whether you're going into a "pvp/normals" queue or a "pve/player vs ai" queue.

The funny part is that while someone on the enemy team may be named Amumu there'll probably be someone with a name like xXBurg3rManXx as well, showing it's actual people. [leblanc-funny]

Given that there's no pragmatic reason for this (at least on the surface), I'd hazard a guess that this is because if we COULD name ourselves the same as the champions (at least the old ones), it would result in something-something-mom's-spaghetti-code

Riot intentionally has those names locked. The only reason they let people have the names of new champions is because those people have the name BEFORE the champ is announced. It would really suck to have your name taken away like that.

Riot has changed their stance since then.

Let me clarify possibly. Newer champions are completely permitted as Riot has decided to do away with this rule according to the Rioter that I spoke to.

The issue here is to allow older champion names to be available. I'm not asking if they're locked, I'm asking to allow them to be unlocked, as they've been more lenient about champion name-taking. item 3117

No offense to the Rioter that you talked to, but I doubt that the opinion of somebody working in support reflects the opinion of the company as a whole. Riot just doesn't want people to have the same names as champions, but they aren't going to forcibly change someone's name because of it.

Honestly I think its better this way. It means people have to be creative with their usernames [poppy-wink]

They're locked for the reason that if you saw "Poppy" in-game, you could confuse newer players or anyone in general in the heat of moment.
